Lorcan trotted along, sun shining on his broad back, adding a bit more of a reddish tinge to his lovely liver chesnut coat. He smiled a bit, shaking out, allowing the sun access to all across his coat, letting it sink to his skin, warming him. He liked these days. These warm, nice days. Though... it wasn't terribly warm, like he'd like it. But it was well enough. He glanced around him at the grass and scattered fields.

A run was out of the question, Lorcan thought. It was to nice a day to waste getting hot and sweaty. Things were not going terribly as planned, at the moment. He would have been rather happy to have had a travel companion, or a herd he could crash with, by now. But as luck would have it, the large stud was alone. Still. He grumbled a bit as he bend his thick neck to take a taste of the fresh grasses. Not bad. He mused.

He lifted his head once more as he ate, eyes traveling around. He could see a fair distance, and, subconsciously, as he snacked, he searched this distance for any form of life. Sure, it had been his own idea to leave his home, but... well it didn't mean he wanted to be alone forever! Company would be much appreciated.

Some horses might think it was a rather nice day so far, some horses were willing to take this relatively nice weather so late in the season and be happy with it, spend their time basking in the sun, grazing still sweet grass and making the most of whatever warm weather still remained before the season changed.

Regret on the other hand barely noticed any of these things, head low and eyes half drooped she shambled along the path of least resistance - which in this case meant following a game trail through the meadow - with no real destination in mind. She was pretty sure the trail would lead to a pond or other water source, they typically did, and while she wasn't particularly thirsty she didn't care enough about where she ended up to do anything but keep putting one hoof in front of the other. The same mindless march she'd been making since...well best not to let her thoughts drift in that direction she told herself.

Of course the speed of her travels had changed..it had started as a flat out run and then steadily decreased - much like her body condition - until it was this slow shambling walk orchestrated by a filthy bony mare. the mare never once bothered to look around and see if her chosen path led her across another, her eyes it seemed never strayed from her hooves and the small puffs of dust they caused with every mindless step.

At first the large stallion had completely missed her. The thin, frail looking figure passed right under his radar. However as his eyes took a second sweep, they landed on her. Dirty, bony, and most certainly looking as if she could use nice batch of fattening fruit, not to mention a bath and a small dose of happiness. He blinked, watching her for a few moments. There was nothing in the way of the two of them. And that would mean he should be clearly visible. He was a large stallion, after all, and he was standing. So... why had this one not noticed him yet? He huffed a bit, slightly insulted. Sure, he wasn't a blaring mess of colors, but he was no boring gray either. She should have seen him... at least. But her body continued its little pathway, and it seemed she just didn't realize what was around her. Least, that was the impression the liver chesnut stallion got. She just seemed oblivious. That, combined with how thin she was... was worrying, to say the least.

It took him a moment and he realized she was heading along the little trail towards him, and towards the river. He had just been at the river, not long ago, and it seemed she was heading that way, closing in slowly. An idea struck. He moved, getting on the path as well. Picking up a steady pace, his hooves clopped down as he made his way towards her at a vary slow trot. She would have to notice him, or run right into him, he concluded as he slowed, nearing her.

Not entirely at the forefront of his mind, the stallion was also worried. This thin, thing creature was a mess. And there was food, everywhere, so he couldn't understand how someone could be like this. He wanted to get her attention, by any means possible, and find out what was wrong... what had caused this...

Regret's ears twitched slightly as a sound began to infringe upon her purposefully blank mind, it took her a few more moments to realize that the sound was not just another insignificant wild sounds - like The Raven's twittering while it circled overhead, or the wind blowing through the grass - no this sound was a bit more important. It was the sound of another horse and one that was coming towards her she realized with a slight start.

Best take a look see she told herself while heaving out a deep sigh and drawing to a halt. Blinking the travel dust out of her eyes - an irritation that had made them water in a rather sickly looking fashion - the dappled mare lifted her head and her gaze to peer ahead of her. A brown stallion seemed to be trotting towards her and his liver colored coat sent contradictory emotions spiraling through her for a few minutes, first joy..and then fear..before, with a scornful snort at herself or reacting so, she took a closer look at him - there were no black points on this dark beast, and the horse in her memories had certainly not been quite so large.

Good. regret gave her head a weak shake to further banish memories best buried as far as she was concerned and shuffled of the path and out of the stallions way, surely he was simply traveling past her she thought to herself as she watched him approach.

Lorcan paused as she moved out of the way. At least, it seemed, she was aware. If only just so. He moved again, continuing towards her before the large stallion stopped slightly in front of her, slightly beside her. Unintentionally, he was trying to block her from taking off down the path again. Trying to stop her so he could speak with her, should she prove skittish and try to bolt. But, of course this was all subconscious. Continuously, he was staring at her thin frame and was puzzled, even more so now that he was close to her, at how thin she was. And how, he wrinkled his nose a little, dirty.

He cleared his throat lightly. "Hello there." He offered a simple greeting. "My name is Lorcan, who might you be?" The liver stallion questioned. He kept his voice even, and soft, not wanting to startle the mare. No, startling was bad. He had learned that lesson already. Best keep a calm, soothing voice until she relieved to him how she was, personality wise. He waited, watching her closely for any reaction or movement, ears perked for her reply.

Regret was willing to wait patiently until the other horse passed her by and continued on his way to ...well where ever it was horses like him went these days, a herd maybe. Herds, not exactly a trail of thought Regret wanted to follow, to do so would mean the rising of troublesome thoughts and memories and so the dappled mare gave her head a weak shake to banish them before they had a chance to take hold. It was about this time that she noticed - somewhat belatedly that the stallion did not intend to wander on past but instead now stood at an angle alongside and in front of her, trying perhaps to keep her from leaving? how incredibly possessive of him she thought to herself and that thought made her flick an ear slightly in distaste.

There wasn't much she was prepared to do about it however the chestnut beast didn't particularly threatening and honestly would she even care if he had been? Unlikely. Turning her gaze upon him she blinked a bleary eye and gave him a blank look as though trying to figure out why he was talking to her...and why he was trying to be kind on top of that, still it didn't seem like he was going to go away and surely a few moments of standing in one spot wouldn't hurt and so heaving out a heavy long suffering sigh she decided to answer him. "I am Regret" She told him pronouncing the word so that it sounded less like a name then a meaning.

He watched her carefully. She seemed so... well defeated. It was bothersome to Lorcan to see such a defeated mare. Vary bothersome. Did she hold no life in her mind as well as in her body? But it didn't seem as if she intended to bolt. He relaxed a little more, having tensed a small amount. No, she wasn't going to bolt, he confirmed, when she spoke to him. At her words, however, Lorcan blinked in confusion. Regret? He waited a moment for her to say anything else. What did she regret? Did she mean that was her name? Or was there more?

When the mare said nothing more, he shook himself lightly, out of the daze, of sorts. "I see, its a pleasure to meet you, Regret." He said kindly. "You seem a bit lost. Is there something your looking for? I have not been here as long as some others, but perhaps...just perhaps, I might be able to help you, if you'll let me of course." She looked like she needed alot more help then he could give, but, he was going to try. He would not leave another to wallow in misery or pain. No sir. "And you look like you could use a meal. There are some grasses right off this path, a little ways, that are rather nice, considering the time of year.

Regret continued to stare blearily at the stallion before her, a pleasure to meet her? Regret couldn't see how, they hardly knew one another - for all he knew he could be speaking to something wicked and evil, once wicked and evil she corrected herself mentally though that was about as far down that trail of though as she as willing to go at the moment. He's just trying to be nice she told herself, probably feels sorry for you. She snorted slightly - he wouldn't...if he knew...a flash of memory surfaced from the depths of her purposefully murky mind and her eyes glazed slightly with a far away expression, a hint of red..no more like a splash her memory corrected, a splash of red on a dark hide. A young dark hide. Regrets nostril flared slightly..but no blood scent filled her sensed, only grass and dirt..and the chestnut stallion, she blinked a few times and the vision faded.

This is what happens when you stand still to long she scolded herself..something comes along to remind you and the memories return to haunt you. It didn't seem as though the stallion was willing to let her move on quite yet however. Focus she told herself..focus he's still talking and the mare realized the stallion had been speaking the entire time she'd been lost in her own memories. She had no idea what he'd said and only caught the last bit of his statement...rather nice, considering the time of year...she glanced about slightly as though trying to find out what he'd been referencing. The weather perhaps? Must be.

"Yes." she stated..and then seemed to decide the stallion might want a bit more of an elaborate answer then a simple yes and cleared her throat slightly to continue "Yes..the weather is quite nice for this time of year" She clarified and continued to stare at him, rather hoping she'd guessed correctly and answered the stallion's inquiry with the proper response.

Lorcan blinked a few times. "Well yeah, that to." He said, caught slightly off guard. As she didn't answer anything else he said, he assumed either she didn't hear him, or was ignoring him. And as such, it would not be rude to re-ask. "I was speaking about the grasses though, of course, the good weather would be the reason the grasses are rather nice. Perhaps you should try some. You look like your in need of a meal, and some assistance. Are you looking for something? Or someone? I am no expert on the land, but, I may be able to provide some assistance." He offered once more.

He hoped this time she got what he was saying, because he really didn't feel like repeating himself again. She must be really out of it, he thought. That was more then a little bothersome. He really hoped she heard him, and answered, so he could figure out why she looked and acted this way. He flicked his tail slightly, eyes watching her.

Damn, Regret thought to herself as she noticed the look on the stallions face - apparently he had't been talking about the weather after all. Well it had been a good guess she consoled herself...but you really must learn to pay more attention to things. But paying attention to things might imply that she still cared about anything and wasn't that a fun conundrum to work through? Your doing it again! letting your mind wander! Regret sighed - it was so much easier to keep a numb blank mind when you kept on the move, stand still long enough and pesky bothersome thoughts started to leak through.

She flicked her ears slightly in an attempt to place her attentions on the chestnut stallion - Lorcan she reminded herself absently, though she wasn't sure why she bothered, it was unlikely she'd ever see him again after this chance meeting was concluded. The grass....thats what he'd been referring to, well how the hell was she supposed to have picked up on that? I mean who talks about grass? But when he referenced her need for a meal the mare was enlightened and glanced at herself offhandedly, dirty and bony hide a far cry from the sleek pretty mare she'd once been, when had she eaten last? yesterday morning? maybe the day before..she couldn't quite recall. "I suppose I could eat..." the mare allowed after a few moments - it wasn't that she had something against eating really, just that she never quite remembered to do so.

He probably thinks your quite daft the mare told herself as he offered his assistance, some crazy old mare who wandered off from the nutty herd. Did Regret really care if he thought she was crazy? well no..she supposed she didn't but she endeavored to give him a halfway decent answer anyways "There is nothing here worth looking for, to look would mean one cares..and I no longer do" She told him truthfully, though she had no idea why she had done so.

Uh oh. Little red lights went off in Lorcan's head, much the same way they did when he smelled something dangerous lurking. Her tone wasn't to reassuring, nor was her posture. She supposed she could eat? Supposed? What kinda talk was that! She looked like some dead thing, but just supposed she could eat. If he knew any way to force feed, oh would he. But, alas, Lorcan was not the forceful type, usually, nor did he feel like it would be an easy task to try. He didn't even know how one would go about force feeding. Hmm, his mother mentioned something once, when they got a sickly little stallion into their herd. Thing looked just about as bad as this mare. Didn't last long either, he mused.

Ah, try not to wander Lorcan, he reminded himself. Last thing he should do was end up like her and say something stupid. After all, being caught spacing out during a conversation, even with a stranger, was embarrassing. Though she didn't seem to care terribly. Could she even think straight, he wondered.

His wondering was cut off however as she spoke again. Her words were rather meaningful, and deep sounding. He blinked. Nothing worth looking for? That would be a no to his question then. She didn't care? About what? Life? Red lights again. Was the mare trying to end up dead? "Sorry but your worrying me here. Are you trying to...die?" He asked, pausing a moment. He didn't want to be to blunt with her and risk her freaking out or something, but she seemed at least semi stable, which was good.

Regret waited patiently for the chestnut to work through whatever thoughts might be wandering through his brain after her statements. It seemed she might have shocked him - or possibly confused him, it was hard to tell with a horse she barely knew. Ah but no it seemed she had managed to worry the beast, not sure why she told herself, he doesn't even know me but she resisted the urge to roll her eyes...until he finished his statement and then she couldn't help but let out a sharp bark of laughter.

Well..at least he'd managed to get her full attention at long last, her mind certainly wasn't wandering anymore though perhaps he would wish it were shortly. "Trying to die?" She asked him shortly "Absurd" she scoffed at the idea "Everything dies eventually, theres no need to try, but there is a large difference between trying to die..and merely no longer caring about anything in life. If I was outwardly attempting to die I'd go and throw myself off a cliff or some other such nonsense" She continued in a bit of a huff, though she wasn't entirely sure why she was angry at the stallion, she wasn't supposed to care what he thought remember?

Of course this realization didn't help her temper any. "Why by the sun would such a thing worry you in any case?" She asked him after a few moments of silence

Well this was new. She certainly woke up into a snippy little mare didn't she? Least it seemed she was listening better. Was it that odd to worry about someone? really? And...well... ok she had a point. Though he wasn't sure there were any cliffs here that she could use. The river though, would be useful. Ah... yeah thats why he asked, sure...that worked. "Well you are heading towards a river. And since I have no idea where you came from, or what kind of terrain is around here other then where I've been, it would not be odd for me to assume a mare in such a sorry state as yourself would be heading to the river to drown herself." He said. "And yes, everyone dies but you certainly look to be heading to an early grave. Your dirty, thin as a rail, and I am surprised you can stand upright." He didn't mean to sound harsh, but her tone pulled out a slightly harsh tone from the stallion.

"And why wouldn't I worry? You must not have run into many because I can assure you that I'm not the only one who would stop you and try to figure out what is wrong with you, or be worried. After all, we arn't like some lone cat or something, we are suppose to look out for our herd, and one who isn't in or with a herd would seek out any other and worry about them." Ok, so he was really blowing a lot of smoke, but he didn't care. "Besides, I have manners and its how I was raised. If I see a sickly little mare such as yourself, I want to help in any way I can. Its called being kind. Do you have something against those being kind?"

He paused a moment. "you sure have a lot of spunk for someone who no long cares about life." He added as an after thought.

So there was a river at the end of the trail after all, well that would be problematic, they could be troublesome to cross and this was certainly not the time of year to go about getting wet, the nights were chilly enough already. Will just have to follow the bank for a time she told herself...eventually you will find a place to cross, don't you always? It seemed like a suitable choice to her and decision made she turned her attention back to this Lorcan fellow whom she realized had been talking the entire time, she came back into the conversation about the time he said 'surprised you can stand upright' and by his tone she was pretty sure she'd missed a few insults before that.

Oh well "Its surprising what one can do if they have a good enough reason to do it" she remarked, though her voice seemed to have lost much of its anger, dispersed it seemed almost as quickly as it had come. His next words however hit home with a sickening clarity and Regret had to take a step or two back from the stallion, shaking her head to keep anymore memories from surfacing. This stallion was dangerous, not physically perhaps - he didn't show any signs of being violent - but mentally for sure, dredging up things that should be forgotten with his words and accusations.

"Yes...horses are kind creatures" she spat at the stallion "Kind and sweet and loving until one grows older and another more sprightly, beautiful creature comes along to get their attention. But then it's too late in't it? you've already thrown away a good life, traded kindness for love, morals for acceptance and now cast away you are lost and nothing and the world is an ugly place." She continued to rant at the beast though her words were quiet, almost soft, somewhat of a contrast to the emotion they seemed to convey. Or maybe she just wasn't strong enough to yell at him properly.

It wasn't till the words had passed her mouth that she realized what she'd done, you've said far to much she scolded herself...if you continue this conversation it will not end well her mental voice cautioned and Regret tried in vain to regain that mindless numb uncaring tate that seemed to protect her so well. Angling away from the stallion she started shambling along again. Moving always helped.

Lorcan blinked. Well well well, seems he struck something there. He shook his head lightly. "Not all horses are kind creatures. I never said that. I'm not stupid. There are those who are cruel...and it seems you've been far to close to one such. Will you please stop a moment." He said as she started walking again. Well, sorta walking. He shook his head and began to walk beside her. "Your a lot more hurt then I thought. Running away from your thoughts isn't gonna make it better. Stop, eat something. The trail will still be here when your finished. You need to clear those thoughts away or else your just gonna end up dead. And I'm sure you don't want to fall into an early grave. Like I said, you got a lot of spunk for someone who says she doesn't care."

How could he get her to stop. Not like he wanted to solve her problems, but this was just not healthy, not safe! And he'd been raised better then that. His mother would kick his rear if she saw him just walk away from this one. "I'm not saying I can fix your problems, but getting them off your mind will help. You can't get on with life if your stuck walking around like a corpse."
