Each of us possesses a symbolic animal - a friendly guide to lead us into our subconscious and help with our spiritual discovery. These animal spirit guides will teach you the lessons of life. You may have more than one totem at different times in your life.
You can connect with the spiritual energy of your animal spirit guide to improve your quality of life
There are several ways to know what your animal totem is. -You may feel so attracted to a certain animal that you have collected many drawings, carvings or other types of images of this animal. The likeness of the animal brings the animal and its powers closer to you. -There may be an animal that frightens you. This could be your animal totem if there are lessons you should learn that you are strongly resisting. -You may dream about the same animal over and over. -The animal may come to you in deep meditation. -You may feel strongly about one of your zodiac animals, birth zodiac, Chinese zodiac or Native American zodiac. -Someone who is attuned to the invisible world may see your animal totem and tell you about it.

The animal totem is also refered to by some cultures and religions as animal or spirit guides. There's are many more than just what you have posted there. Some people know from a very early age as to what their totem is, other's not until later on, and some never know. Whilst you can have more than one totem to help you through many different stages of your life there is alway one, main totem or guide that is there for you throughout your whole life. Each culture has different meanings to each animal, but most are the same throughout.
An interesting fact: I've actually expierienced help from my main animal guide. Mostly through dreams but nonetheless it still helped me.
For those who are interested my main guide is a wolf. And what a lovely wolf it is. Below is some information on the wolf animal guide that I found on some random website. Of course its only from one culture so many may find similar or different information on the wolf if they look.
Wolf: Wolves symbolize family, teaching, co-operation, insight, stealth, strength, leadership, loyalty, freedom, individuality, psychic energy connected to the moon (hidden wisdom), sharing knowledge and wisdom, cunning, hunting, seeking, introspection, listening, magick, dreams, They are connection to the moon and to Wepwawet, Zeus Lycaeus, Apollo, Ares, Mars, Silvanus, Cernunnos and Odhinn. My animal totems are tigers and wolves. To my knowledge almost any animal can be a totem. I mean, I have a board about this topic in my guild but since it is a pagan guild, we would go more in depth with it.

It is true, bobkitty, any animal can be an animal totem/guide/spirit. It doesn't matter, some cultures just have more than others, and each culture has a different view on that animal.
Ooo, pagan guild eh? Thats amazing. I'm researching pagan and wiccan religions, and I read some book or another, it only touched briefly on the animal guides/totems/spirits bit but it was very interesting what was said about them.
And no one has only one animal spirit/guide/totem all to themselves either, for those who don't know this I am putting it out there XD, you can call upon any depending on what each one is for for help and guidance through situations in which they are good for....
Wow I think I worded that wrong...I'll come back and fix it up another time then....
