FrogOSphere

Alright lets talk about the growing popularity of the FrogOSphere. It's been almost a year since I first saw it in a souvenir shop, and shook my head at the item, as cute as it is and cost effective, I knew in the back of my head this was a terrible item.

But I feel its right for me to bring it up today, since I saw an entire wall of them in the mall today.

Now don't quote me too much on anything, since I've never taken care of frogs other than my second grade days as a wee student, but this 'self containing' ecosystem is no where within logical care for aquatic animals.

1>
Several things got to me such as the "bamboo" plant. First off this ever so popular "lucky" bamboo has gotten a rep for being a water plant when it is not. It's actually an African plant that normally thrives on land and can cope with water environment, to a certain extent and can turn the water rancid, if the water isn't changed or if you don't give the roots some air.

2>
Feed the frogs 2 pellets 2 times per week.<- and they emphasis this point with exclamation points. I opened the box and the food looked like...cheap fish pellets, I don't think there was even an ingredient list for the pellets.

3>
The top is sealed. Aren't they better off with an open top or even a mesh, like the ones you get for insect carriers?

A lady near me asked me "Aren't these adorable?" I turned to her and told her how bad this tank was probably and she was better off going to the pet shop and buying a carrying case if not a small tank for these frogs with actual food and care tips. She looked and me and picked a box and went, "Oh this one has blue rocks, don't you think this is better than the green one?"

*facepalm*
This woman was buying 4 of them, for Christmas Gifts.

from my expirience with herp keeping starter sets or species specific kits of any type are either filled with shitty items or are best used to slowly kill the animal they are designed to keep. this is especially true with frogs because most of the time the animal needs at least twice the amount of room than the kit provides

Reasons I hate christmas. I have never kept frogs, but I've had salamanders and turtles, and if they are anything to go by, a frog would need quite some room, proper food, and live if possible, and a filter that is quite a bit stronger then what fish need. And a floating island!

Which reminds me of another 'cute gift' I hate! Turtle lagoons I've seen people keeping turtles (plural) like this outside in the sun!

just saw the link and clicked it

my god, those poor frogs arent going to live very long, these guys need warm water and more room. assuming they are dwarfs and not clawed frogs they need a min of 1gal each. ive got one and he is in a 20gal, no he doesnt use all the space but at least he has the proper temps and proper food.

these guys arent really all that active and dont need alof of room like other frogs but this is way too small

ive been seeing these kinds of setups fro these frogs at beach shops now. and dont even get me started on the anoles alot of beach shops in my area have started carrying

Do frogs really need higher filter power than fish. 0-0

wow, an 8in diameter! Now from my experience aren't the sale of baby turtles at a certain size not allowed? And...I had a tank of small turtles in a biology class and they used the entire 10cal tank to swim and rested on a huge slab of rock (slate I think). What people would go for small and compact things.

You would not put a dog to live in just a three times his length would you?
People need to be educated about these things.

some frogs need waterr changes everyday depending on your setup. but this species hardly produces any waste and cant have stong filtration because they are weak swimmers.

i have used a filter for a 10gal in a tank with about 5gals of water for my fire bellies, im not sure if they were any better off or worse because of it though

all in all it depends on your setup and the species of frog, these guys do fine without a filter but thye need a heater. same care as a betta basicly

I saw thees at target YEARS ago. Or something similar. They had frog ones and fish ones. I believe the fish were feeder guppies and/or white clouds. They did not have bamboo but they had little plastic things. and most of the fish and stuff were dead. gonk

the frog ones (with one frog) was the size of like...a coffee mug.

The bigger ones were like this http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2753229&lmdn=Fish

and he smaller ones were like..just the one half of that tank. and it had food taped to the side. with no instructions. (at least not visible)

Those things really make me angry... there was a petition a couple years ago to take a similar thing called AquaBuddies off the market. Hopefully there will be a backlash against the FrogOSphere as well. scream

I *think* that's what they were called. Let me find a link.

Edit: AquaBabies. Here's their site *shudder*:

I think they used to sell them at Target and Walmart. They stopped carrying them because of all the complaints from both animal rights people AND dissatisfied customers.

from the aquababies website
"At first glance, the uninformed person might question whether the container is too small. If this were the case, the fish would die and this product would be an impossibility:

the fish do die you twit xp

at least they seem to be agaisnt putting a goldfish in a bowl but this isnt much better gonk

Do people honestly keep frogs in those..?

I have three african dwarf frogs in a 10 gallon tank.
Along with a betta and two tetras.. =]

I feed mine frozen bloodworms and brine shrimp they LOVE them!~
I use a pair of long tweezers to grab food then individually feed each one of them until they have a little belly.
Gah; that food doesn't not sound too good for them.. some people are just too lazy to have pets. D;

So many people get bettas and keep them in tiny fish bowls and crap.. I heard they are best in 2 gallons of water.. not .5 or something dumb.
