The wolfess trotted through the landscape, head hung low and tail half tucked. She didn't understand how things had changed; she'd once been at the top, a devoted daughter, her parents the alpha's of a prosperous land and pack. . . . The world had been at her paws, so to speak, and she hadn't a care or concern. Everything had been going so good she'd never been able to forsee the great fall she'd have to take.

First disease, spreading through the pack and affecting her mother, her aunt Amarii. . . . And then famine, drought; the paradise Pandemonium had found turned in to a nightmare. Strife had caused Xadine to get ina dispute with her father; in fact, the dispute had escalated in to a down right fight and she had bolted. She'd been young then, well a few months younger at any rate. . . . but pride had caused her to keep away from home. At first she'd blamed her father's temper and over-protective nature. . . .

But only recently did she realize she was as much to blame. She'd inherited her father's stubborness and while usually as gentel and fragile as Bindi, in this case she had refused to see her err. Only returning to Pandemonium showed just how much a mistake leaving had been. . . . For there were no traces no signs, nothing of the pack that once resided.

Her family was gone. . .all of them. .. where to, she knew not. The scents and trails they might have left for her were long since weathered away. From the looks of things, the pack had scattered in various directions; they hadn't left together and yet she knew not where any might roam. Whenever she howled, waiting for an answer, she found herself disappointed. No one she knew ever responded. . . . Of course they couldn't have just disappeared but .. . where her family had gone, she hadn't a clue. Pandemonium had been their home for so long she knew not where they might have moved to.

So here she was, wandering through foreign lands in hopes of picking up some familiar scent. . . .Never had she felt so alone, felt so small. What would become of her. . .? Only time would tell.

The wandering female daren't not let a soft whine past her lips, though with even stiff steps through the frozen woods she was concerned. Her Baba, so old now she knew, and farther away to her than the moon. How was he faring with the weather? Would his beads, twined intricately through his matted and weathered pelt still clink and jingle as he walked? The icy patches on the ground, growing and spreading each day on the once sun-warmed dirt. Would they hinder him? Would he slip? Would he fall?

And if he did, Najle was unsure whether or not the old man could get back up. This time of year, she noted the sun's height in the sky as a time reference, he would be all alone. The traveling band he kept with only stayed together during the spring and summer seasons. Longer than that and their paws would itch with longing for unfamiliar fields and they dispersed.

Stopping, the female let her posture sag with a longing look through the trees in front of her. Wandering paws had lead her this far, but without a companion to keep her on, what was she really doing?

With her head lowered and tail partially tucked, the female was hardly recognizeable in her dire state. Moving through the foliage, she was so full of hurt and pain that she didn't know what to do. Every few hours tears threatened to overwhelm her, but her proud nature didn't allow for her to cry.

Not yet, at any rate.

The nights were the hardest. How she missed the songs of the pride, of Uncle Juude's silly rambling and games, of her siblings warmth, of her mother's dying affection. Though no one had told her the specifics of the plague, all Xadine could wonder was if her mother would die without her. Without being able to say goodbye, without being able to let her go.

Everyday was a mystery and the thought plagued her. Of course, anger and frustration at herself and her family's negligence tended to overwhelm her. Why had she ever left! How stupid of her. . . . And why had they not looked for her? Why had they gone without her!? And where!? And . . .and. . . .

The girl wanted to scream but she refused. She wanted to tear at the world and demand it lead her to her family and the great pride that once was. Unfortunately, it wasn't meant to be. . . All she could do was fight with her demons of remorse by herself. . .and forever keep on her hunt.

Of course, instinct helped keep her on guard. Movement nearby caused Xadine to stop. Her heart fluttered and in desperation she bolted forward, calling out, "Mother! Is that . . . " She skidded to halt though, catching sight of the femme. Though she possessed swirls and a golden coat similar to tat of her mothers. . . . she was not Bindi. Her ears flattened and she quickly glanced away. "Sorry. . . wrong wolf. . . " The disappointment was obvious, and Xadine was quick to take a few steps away.

Best not crowd the stranger after all. Especially if this wolfess was aggressive.
