It was a family emergency, Melody had said over the phone. She didn't know how serious it was, but, she emphasized, no one was hurt, no one was sick, no one was dying; she just had to spend some time with her father for a while and while having the grandchildren around might lift his spirits, she didn't feel all that comfortable exposing them to the sort of negativity that was bound to be floating around her father's mind.

And if she weren't simply repeating her father's words and conveying the tone of the phone call made to HER, she would have been all too glad to share the actual circumstances of the emergency with Hitsuga. But she had been, and she was only slightly less in the dark than he was, she assumed.

Which meant that the twins, dressed in the footed pajamas that had been their halloween costumes (Eiji with a lion tail and hood, and Tsubaki with a tiger hood and tail), were dropped off rather unceremoniously at the Perfumery with only a quick explanation of the contents of the large diaper bag dangling from the handle of the double stroller that sat both children. Large soft goggles in the side pouch in case there's too much magic out and about. Diapers, wipes, powder in the bag. Soft toys, jars of baby food (Green beans, carrots, bananas, and pears), sippy cups, juice mix, blankets, baby shampoo (just in case) and did she have everything? She thought so.

And she didn't know when she'd be back, but she'd call if it'd be late into the evening; Boyue should be home by then, so Hitsuga shouldn't have to worry about-- oh look at the time, she really had to go!

Which left two very confused, wide-eyed babies in animal pajamas in a strange-smelling shop with an equally strange-smelling, strange person, and mommy running away from them at an alarming pace.

Tsubaki stuck three fingers in her mouth as she seemed to ponder this new development.

And Eiji began to cry.

For Hitsuga, the entire experience had been bewildering, to say the least. While he was certainly not AFRAID of Melody's children, he'd never actually been left alone with them before. If something went wrong and one or both of them started to cry, Melody had been right nearby to assist.

But now...here they were, the both of them, and Melody was well out of earshot by now and....

....and already one of them was in tears. gonk

Moving slowly, not wanting to upset them further, he lowered himself to eye level with the two children, knitting his brow.

Little Eiji, its all right. Mother will be back soon... his projections soothed, hands fidgeting as he tried to recall what it was Melody did to quiet them.

Once Eiji had begun to cry, and once the first "Maa-maa" accompanied his tears and projections of distress, Tsubaki had instantly gone from questioning to whimpering.

And though Eiji had continued to weep and call for Maa-maa (And even Daa-daa, for good measure), Hitsuga's soothing projections had some effect, it would seem.

The tiny tiger's whimpers had quieted, her faintest projections of echoed distress had ceased, and, at least, the poor lion's crying hadn't intensified into full-blown wails.

At least.

The soothing murmurs of thought continued, his eyes remaining on them carefully as if he were afraid that if he were to divert his attention, everything being precariously-balanced at the moment would come crashing down into disaster.

Melody....had said there were toys in the bag. One hand carefully reached up to fumble through it, seeking soft plush.

Mother had some things to tend to, just for a little while, his thoughts prattled on.

No, that was a jar. ...that was a different container of some sort, but not a toy....

But she would be back soon because she loves Eiji and Tsubaki very much, so there's no need to cry, yeeees...? sweatdrop

Plastic...more plastic...paper something? Hitsuga was beginning to wonder if perhaps Melody, in her haste to pack, had only thought she'd packed toys for the twins...

Wait, there! His hand closed on what felt decidedly like a stuffed animal of some sort and eagerly withdrew it from the bag, hoping it might offer Eiji some comfort.

Look at what Hitsuga has, Eiji! 4laugh He has--

In offering the toy lamb to the whimpering child, only then did he realize he'd gotten more than he'd intended to from the bag as one of the diapers' adhesive fasteners had come loose and stuck itself to his sleeve, clinging there as if for dear life.

---erm....he has a stowaway, apparently. He finished, reaching to pluck the added baggage away from himself with his free hand with a flutter of embarrassment.

This was off to a wonderful start, clearly.

The comical sight of a plastic diaper hanging from Hitsuga's sleeve, as well as the projection of embarrassment, caused both twins to suddenly erupt into a peal of shrieking giggles.

Not that they seemed inclined to offer an explanation, projected or otherwise, as to WHY it was so funny, but with Eiji ignoring the sheep in favor of watching the funny man's antics, and Tsubaki covering her face with her hands as she continued to shriek with laughter, did it really matter why they found it funny? They'd forgotten all about their tears, and that, for the moment, was all that really mattered.

Well, that and being released from the stroller, but that wasn't as important.
