It might have seemed a strange sight - a grown man wandering alone through a carnival, a backpack clutched to his chest - but Astan was imposing enough to deflect nearly every odd stare or bit of negative attention that might have been directed at him. It seemed people were afraid to point and laugh or even ask him what was wrong. Maybe it was the expression he wore, an odd mix of slightly annoyed and slightly worried.
"I can't read your letters when we are in the bag, Ro," Rahk said, her high-pitched voice loud enough to be heard several feet away from the backpack she rode in. Astan had told the protos to be quiet more than once, and although Ro couldn't help but follow that particular order, it seemed Rahk was making up for her sibling's lack.
"Shhh," he prompted again, shaking the bag a bit for emphasis. This might have been a carnival, but that didn't mean it was free of people who meant them harm.

Rhian hummed softly to herself, relishing the sound of her own voice, as she skipped around the carnival, avoiding scary-looking people and having fun playing in the midway. Eventually, the humming turned into a full-out --but quiet-- song. "... And in the sea there is a fish, a fish that has a secret wish, a wish to be a big cactus with a pink flower on it.~" Pausing by a vendor's booth to look at a big, big, cuddly teddy bear, Rhian's antennae twitched as she felt the presence of an unfamiliar - wait, was it one or two? - essence nearby. "Hm..." she murmured before skipping off in the direction of the Essence(es?).
Getting close to where she felt the source, she found her attention captured by a rather imposing-looking man with a backpack on ... his chest? They were called backpacks for a reason, so. . . oh! There was a voice coming out of it! The Essence she detected must have been a proto! Practically dancing over now, she reached out with her Essence a bit, flaring it so that the little proto(s?) could sense her clearly, and that she wasn't dangerous. Meanwhile, she addressed their owner. "Hello, mister... are you lost?"

Astan peered down at the girl, his lips curling into a smile he couldn't help. She was just so very... sweet. "Yeah, I guess so. I don't think I'd be here at all if it wasn't for... I mean, well, yeah. What's fun to do around here?" You know, for girls. He held back a sigh. Why had his protos decided to be girls?
As Astan rambled on about nothing, the twins crowded forward in their backpack, gathering around the dense mesh opening at the front of the pack and peering out at the other Essentic. That was the only thing she could be, this friendly young lady and her persistent Essence.
"Astan," Rahk said before she could be shushed. "Let us out." It wasn't immediately clear whether or not there were two protos in the bag or just one with a royalty complex, but if someone got close enough, they would definitely see two pairs of eyes with their strange double irises looking out at the world.

Rhian tilted her head and put a finger to her chin as she thought. "Hm... well, it's a carnival, so there are a lot of fun things to do," she said quietly, then stepped a bit closer and saw the pairs of eyes peering at her. Her own eyes (and antennae) lit up excitedly, and she smiled at the mesh, and said a quiet, "Hello, little siblings," to the tiny things looking at her. Then she looked up at their owner again.
"All of us seem to wind up coming to Farstep at some time or another; there's me and Ziazan and Lauss who live here, and the others all come see us sometimes too," she said, reaching up and touching her flaring antennae with a wink. "My name's Rhian, I think you'd have met my big brother Misha?"
Her confidence was higher around strangers when they had Essentics with them, she was finding, though truly she knew she was safe in Farstep, because, odd as she looked, she was one of theirs, and her Mama and Papa and Mister Keagan would be sure to make sure everything was okay. No, it was only the city and any place without her siblings or Lauss-teacher that scared her. She knew she was safe with one of the others.

Astan's eyes widened a bit. Siblings. Right. He relaxed slightly and nodded. "Yep, Misha's a nice guy and I'm glad to meet you, Rhian. I'm Astan..." His voice dropped to a lower volume. "And these two are Rahk and Ro." The man had a hard time discussing his Essentics openly for fear that someone would take them, but this girl seemed comfortable enough. He thought back on Misha's words regarding others of his kind. "Rhian and Ziazan. Your guardian has babies? And Lauss. He used to be able to float around, right? I saw him for a second, a long time ago." Astan grinned. It was remarkable how much he could recall about these beings when he put his mind to it.
One of the twins shifted, making the backpack pooch out to one side for a moment like a mother's stomach when her baby kicked.
"Is it... safe here? Can they come out?" He wouldn't give the pair the run of the place or anything, but it might be nice if the three Essentics could see each other clearly. If it came to it, he would just insist the protos were magical toys or something.

Rhian shook her head. "No, it's still too risky out here. But you can come to my house and visit. Maybe Mama would give you someone to talk to, Mister Astan . . . I know she would have liked help with me when I was little," she said, and continued in a low voice, "And it's nice to meet you all, especially you, Rahk and Ro. I can't wait until I can see you better, but you're safer in there right now, okay?"
Turning a bit, she waved at Astan to follow her. "Follow me. Rahk and Ro can have lots of fun at my house, they could meet the puppies, and maybe Lauss will come for a visit." She still spoke in that same low tone, just loud enough for the three she was talking to to hear her, but no-one else (unless they were Faolan or Kelly, but that was an entirely different story.)

A quieter, slightly awed version of the voice that had previously come out of the bag said, "Yes, Rhian," then fell silent.
Astan nodded in agreement as well. He trailed after the Alter, taking in the sights and sounds of the carnival as he went. Did Rhian really live here? It was certainly a lot more interesting than his apartment. He knew the twins would love the promised puppies and he was curious about other Essentic caretakers as well.

"This way, this way," Rhian called quietly, leading the three through the carnival and to her house, right up to the door of her home and opened the door, calling out, "Mama! We have guests!" She smiled at Astan and waved him (and Rahk and Ro by default) inside.
Ellandra was in the nursery when she heard Rhian call out, and, kissing Sam's head lightly, placed him in his crib and headed out and downstairs to the living room. "Guests, Rhian? May I ask wh - oh, hello there," she said with a slightly-timid smile when she spotted Astan and the ... rather odd backpack he was wearing.

Astan ducked inside, feeling slightly awkward at the prospect of entering someone's home that he had never met. "Hi," he replied as Ellandra greeted him. "Don't worry, I'm um..." He lifted the backpack off of the shoulder it hung from and set it on the floor, opening it and urging the protos to emerge. Astan hoped their presence made the fact that Rhian had brought a strange man home seem less bizarre.
"Hello," Rahk said, brushing herself off. Ro waved. "You have pretty lights on your head," Rahk told Rhian. She had been wanting to compliment the girl's antennae ever since she had first seen them.

Ellandra's face lit up as soon as she caught sight of the tiny protos, immediately thinking back to how little Ziazan had been at that stage. "Ah, I see," she said gently. "Welcome, sir.... would you like something to drink?" she asked politely, much more at ease now that she knew the reason - well, reasons - why he was here. "And if you have any questions or anything, I would be glad to try and assist you."
Rhian smiled at her younger siblings and sat down crosslegged on the floor, inviting the twins to come closer. "Thank you! You're both very pretty yourselves," she said warmly. "You're Rahk and Ro, right? Isn't that fun, we all have names that start with R!" Yes, she truly thought that was a delightful little coincidence, and she wanted her new little sisters to be able to have fun and play here. . . though it certainly wouldn't be with the flutterby alone, as the sound of paws came near, revealing contessa, who stopped and stared at the strange things on the floor, letting out a soft, curious and wary 'wuff' at the strange sight.

Astan nodded, still somewhat uncomfortable to be in a stranger's home, but managing to stifle most of the feeling since he technically had a reason to be there. This woman even looked vaguely familiar, although he couldn't have said where he had seen her. "Water's fine. And thanks for the offer. I... does Rhian do anything out of the ordinary? Magically?" Not that magic was terribly out of the ordinary for some, it had just never been common in Astan's circle of friends.
The twins didn't need much of an invitation at all, immediately scurrying over to Rhian's side. "Are we?" Rahk asked. She had never thought of herself - and by extension, Ro - as falling under the descriptive umbrella of 'pretty,' but she supposed Rhian must have meant it or she wouldn't have said so. "Thanks! Yes, I am Rahk and this is Ro. She doesn't speak, so I will speak for us both." Normally Ro was the more personable of the two, never missing an opportunity to introduce herself, but at the moment she seemed to be distracted. Another dog! The proto had been new to dogs when she had met Kell, but now she knew all about them! Or at least she thought she did. Ignoring the fact that she and her sibling looked more like chew toys than people, Ro held out her hands toward Contessa and smiled.
