It had all gone beautifully! Many had died, and she'd seen their charred remains ambling across campus as the sun rose on the horrific scene. However, in Linarite's mind, the only thing horrific was that they didn't all die in the fiery grave they'd so helpfully made for the student body. Now, they were hiding in classrooms, in the gym, in many places.
Some were even trying to escape!
That was where they came in. The few. The proud. The inescapably evil...or so they were told. The bluenette - who was now a pinknette, didn't have trouble with homicidal, but evil was a bit harder. Bitchy was no issue, the teen lived and breathed b***h out of every pore as often as she could....with exceptions. Usually male exceptions. Shaking her head, and getting back to the moment at hand, Linarite's honey eyes skimmed the campus for a familiar dark face.
Where had Khaldun gotten to? He either needed to be killed, or taken from campus. It just didn't do to have your possibly somewhat boyfriend seeing you killing people at random, with great abandon. It just really killed any relationship that was budding, honestly.
Gracefully, the lieutenant hopped down behind a bush, and phased back into her Barren Pines uniformed human self. The youma wouldn't bother her, nosiree. She was a girl on a mission!

Khaldun looked a bit disheveled, wearing a rather smokey Barren Pines uniform with the jacket unbuttoned and his necktie doubling as a hairtie for his dreadlock ponytail (the real one was nothing but charred carbon at this point, left behind in his dorm). He had a meat cleaver in one hand, stained with what one could presume to be blood (Human? Zombie? Both?), looking like he was taking all this zombie invasion business rather well. Though, that could have been because he was halfway through a stolen cigarette, tapping the ash off at random intervals.
He wasn't too far from the treeline, wandering out in the open as though he owned the place and breathing out trails of smoke as he stalked across a grassy lawn. There weren't any zombies in sight. It wasn't clear what he was doing in such an unprotected spot, since he wasn't shouting or running for cover. And he wasn't green around the edges either, so he wasn't a rampant zombie.
To be honest, he was looking for Audrey.

As she rounded a corner around a wall of dorm building rubble, she finally spotted him. Charred, bloody, and absolutely gorgeous, Audrey's conflicted heart rose and sank in unison. He really was good-looking, and incredibly fun to play with. But orders were orders, and they weren't allowed to let anyone leave. Maybe, just maybe, she could get him to Charonite and...hm. Possibly this was a test.
God damn it.
Shaking her head, Audrey pulled the bright ribbon from her hair and shoved it in a deep pocket of her skirt. With a regretful rip, she smudged and tore her skirt up a little, to make it seem as if she'd fled the building during the fire. It wouldn't do to let the boy know that she'd been on the first floor, happily setting fire to it herself.
Only then did she come hopping around the corner, trying her best to look mildly frightened, and then in turn, relieved. "Khal! Oh my god, Khal are you ok?! It's so crazy! Half the student body is like some bad kind of horror cast, and the others are...I have no idea where they are!" Unruly hot pink hair streamed out behind Audrey as she rushed over to her fair-weather boyfriend. "What's going on?!"

Needless to say, Khaldun was a bad actor. He wasn't bothering to look unnerved by the state Barren Pines was in. He was, when he chose to make the change, Hematite - he was in no danger. He was the danger. This was a confidence booster in a world where 99.9% of the time he was not the one who called the shots. But it sure as hell didn't look like Nealite, Obsidian, or Linarite were around.
Khaldun removed the cigarette from his mouth and breathed out a small trail of smoke into the wintry air. His eyes followed the sound of Audrey's frantic shouts, and he shifted the cleaver slightly in his grip. Now he knew why the General-King was so adamant that he didn't get involved with a Barren Pines student like Audrey - he was never going to hear the end of it from Obsidian unless he got rid of the evidence before the evidence could get to talking. Just a youma. Of course he wasn't so lucky as to land a real girlfriend. He practically laughed when she started babbling questions at him. "Audrey, I'm fine. But what about you? How'd you get out of the fire?"
As she got closer, he held the cigarette in his mouth for a brief second in order to give the universal finger-near-the-lips gesture for quiet. "Don't shout, you might get someone - er, something's - attention."

....that was actually a very good question. Audrey couldn't possibly say that she had gracefully bounded from her third story window to land with ease on the ground. No human had those powers, and the youma in the student body wouldn't think of it. ******** sheep, the lot of them. Clapping a hand over her mouth, she got closer to the boy. All the better to vaporize him when the time came, really.
Voice in a hush, the new pinkette sheepishly laughed. "Well uh, you see...I've been sneaking out at night to visit a friend in town. We went to school together before I came to Barren Pines. I still had the sheets all knotted up, and I just slid down them once I found out there was a fire." Yeah, that was totally valid, right? Close enough, the details were unimportant.
"What about you? I thought you were dead, I'm so glad to see you!" Really, it would be easier if she could just throw her arms around him, and so she did, hugging the boy tight. It really didn't matter if he got upset at her affection now. It was all over.

"That was lucky," he murmured cryptically. Lucky she'd made it over to him so that he could get this personal errand done and out of mind. Not knowing how else to feign his interest in her, Khaldun settled for replacing the cigarette in mouth once again and running his free hand through her hot pink hair. And suddenly he had Audrey hanging off of him, hugging tight enough that he was starting to become afraid she'd break a rib or three in her enthusiasm. No point in drawing this out.
Audrey shouldn't have taken her attention off him for even a moment. The Barren Pines uniform was just a lure at this point, one that had helped him to pinpoint survivors and stragglers from the fire by looking like one of them. Even as she clung to him, he made the transformation instantly, effortlessly, to Lieutenant Hematite. And it would have been silent as well, had it not been for the ticking of his boots. His Negaverse weapon had been destroyed, but even if the meat cleaver was absolutely mundane, breakable, and unable to be summoned in and out of any convenient pockets of space, it was still rather effective. Especially at close range.
"Oh, Audrey, I've never been in any danger here," he spoke softly, tobacco smoke breathed out over her head. Slowly, gently, Hematite's right arm began to rise, cleaver in a tight grip. He really didn't get enough opportunities to take a personal enjoyment in Negaverse duty. Audrey was about to find out what Hematite thought about being tricked by appearances. "But you are."

Honey eyes went wide as saucers as suddenly in her arms was a Negaverse lieutenant. There were all of three thoughts that went through her mind at this point, and they could be summed up as '********', 'NO WAY!', and amusingly enough 'Wasn't this the one staring at my a** throughout the last meeting?'. Her jaw dropped slack in shock and horror, and then her eyes caught it.
The glint off the dull metal of the cleaver alerted Audrey to his homicidal intentions, and suddenly things were much worse than they'd been a moment before. Nevermind that Khaldun was one of them. He thought she was one of them! In one swift move, she shoved at his chest and kicked him in the shin, breaking away with a cruel yank to her hair. No doubt he was now holding several strands of bright pink hair, but she was not going to die in that instant!
As she took a deep breath, she glared and suddenly, Linarite was standing there, in all her angry glory. A bluenette once more, she summoned her hammer and held it like a shield across her chest. "I don't think I'm in as much danger as you think I am, Hematite." She all but spat that name out, eyes angry and hurt all at once. It was ******** typical! Go figure that Nealite would set her up with a goddamn lieutenant!
No wonder the General King had been so furious! Well. At least he wasn't a goddamn senshi.

Hematite hadn't been expecting a struggle, just some dumb questions and maybe some screaming and blood if he didn't aim carefully enough. So the combination of shove and kick were unexpected, and had him dangerously close to falling backward. The cleaver was waved out sideways to steady himself, and his foot hurt like a b***h. In the process of keeping his balance he'd lost his cigarette. What a waste! And what an uncooperative youma b***h Audrey was being; now he'd have to chase her down and-
How the hell did she know his Negaverse name?
The teen looked over at Audrey to find he wasn't looking at Audrey at all, but someone a little more familiar and at the same time, practically unknown. He recognized the oversized hammer, the sour expression, and above all the frilly gray skirt - he'd seen up that skirt before. Hematite had been caught completely off-guard by the revelation that he already knew Audrey... kind of. Knew of her, at any rate. "Lieutenant Linarite?"
After a few more moments of extremely blatant staring, he added, emphatically, "********>

Slowly, she lowered the hammer and leaned on it with a sigh and a nod. "Yeah, that was my initial reaction too." Her hands stayed on the haft, ready to swing at a moment's notice. The cleaver was much more dangerous than her stupid hammer, and infighting was not entirely disapproved of. The teen had just healed from a nasty round of cuts, she wasn't in the mood to bleed again.
Lip curling slightly, Linarite couldn't help but snort. "So it's fairly obvious that we've both been played just a bit here, don't you think?" Nealite was absolutely the culprit. She'd thrown them together, deliberately not informed the other about their double lives, and then sat back to watch the chaos. This was worse than pink hair. This was that orange-haired b***h messing yet again in her love life! Where the hell did she get off doing such a thing? Augh! Lina hated her so much!
It was pointless to b***h now. They only had so much time to eliminate all remnants of Barren Pines, and she'd be damned if the other lieutenants were going to have all the damn fun. Especially since her hair was now ******** pink because of it! "So...where do we go from here?"

Well, a lot of things were starting to make sense now.
"A bit," he agreed flatly. So maybe Nealite was responsible, and Hematite wouldn't put it past her that it had been a very knowing setup. But it was kind of a relief to know he was dating a Negaverser and not just some random human - now he could talk about a little more than Barren Pines homework with her. Though, the problem with talking was that Audrey didn't have much to say that interested him. He preferred when they fooled around, at least she was forced to shut up. So if she was such an annoyance, why not break it off now that the opportunity was right? She was like cigarettes. He was addicted to the semblance of power, having a girl who loved him, unconditionally. Even if she hadn't known he was Hematite. But he wasn't ready to give it up so soon, even if Audrey was really a work colleague - and anyway, if it pissed off the General-King that much, it had to be worth pursuing. Linarite was infatuated, and Hematite was fascinated. They could still make it work... he'd get back that adoring, devoted Audrey that lurked inside Linarite if it killed her. She was still his. "But..."
He noticed Linarite eyeing the cleaver. Well, he wasn't going to ******** gut a lieutenant now that he knew that. Carefully, he plunged the blade into the grass and dirt so that it was sticking straight up for easy removal. He reached out toward her with one hand, the other being dug into his jacket pocket. It wasn't a loving-looking gesture, but a commanding one, palm pointed downward, fingers splayed out. Hematite sighed in frustration, and stared at Linarite with a look daring her to disagree with his decision. "Linarite... Audrey... what we're going to do is, we're going to forget this happened. And you're going to put that hammer away right now. Things are going to stay exactly the same as ever. Being Lieutenants doesn't change anything for us."

If Nealite were watching the pair from above, she would doubtless be amused at the scene. Linarite, and Audrey within her, was absolutely torn on the matter. She'd certainly been misled, but not by Khaldun. If anything, he was being a good lieutenant by keeping his secret locked away where even she could not tell it. And it wasn't as if their relationship was built on conversation and shared interest.
And of course, there would be no opportunities...elsewhere. In her mind, a daisy bloomed, and withered. No. No other opportunities. And in his way, Khal was a good match for her. There weren't any real illusions, and she knew where she stood. It might even give her a step up in the Negaverse, having someone she could generally count on to get s**t done. Though really, Khal wasn't too good for that either.
But something, was much better than nothing.
Dropping the heft of the hammer, Linarite folded her arms across her chest and tossed her hair negligently, as if it mattered little to her what happened now. "Possibly we can find better places where the General King won't interrupt us, now that we can share our particular skill set." That was Lina. Strategist to the end.
