Inside The Palace Walls...

Main Hall

A long, spacious hallway leads to the huge, throne room doors. Only two other doorways are in this hallway, they are open, and are located straight across each other a little ways down the hall. The ceiling is high and arched, covered with a thick layer of cob webs that still hold their eight legged makers.

Murals have been painted on both sides of the hall. They depict horrific scenes of brutality; Sacrifices to Lolth, battlefields, drow maidens seen enjoying the torture of others, cannibalism, and many other scenes of pain and suffering are displayed. These paintings obviously include a lot of blood, but instead of using red paint, the Matrons of Rylinndar insist on using real blood. They take those that they interrogate as the pallet.

The only source of light in the hallway comes from the other two doorways. The faint light of purple faerie fire emanates from them, casting an eerie, almost sinister glow. The doorways are rounded, and the top of the entrances have been carved to fit the shape of front legs, mandibles, and the head of spider.

A long, dark purple rug lies upon the polished stone floor. Marbled benches ten feet long, with the legs shaped like an arachnid’s, are placed in front of each other, on each side of the hall. Twenty feet separates each of the benches. Plush, dark purple cushions are placed a top them.

Although this is not a normal drow custom, every so often as you walk down the hallway, you will pass a round pedestal with a large bust of a matron mother of this house. They are identical in a few ways, all are carved from black marble and have garnets set in for the eyes.

As you come closer to the entrance of the throne room, you will see the bust of the previous matron mother, Dhaunva Rylinndar. Her face almost appears skeletal, with a wide dark smile, her hair put back into curls. On the other side, directly across, set’s Ulvira’s. Her petrified scowl and menacing features almost come close to the real matron, she is wearing her special made war helmet that resembles a roman’s, with the Indian chief feathers fanning out. It gives the visitor the slight idea of whom they are dealing with.

For a moment it almost appears as if there are no doors at the end of the hall, the only hint is the tiniest crack down the center of the gray stone. The doors are fifteen feet in height and when measured together, the width is six feet, and is a foot thick. In the center of the great doors is the Rylinndar Insignia, the five headed snake whip. It glows a dark purple, as purple and black are the royal colors.

Two sentinels stand alert by the entrance. They are female drow, identically dressed in black armor with spider designs. Their piwafwi’s are tossed over one shoulder, and depict the royal colors with house insignia blazoned in the middle. In one hand is placed a tentacle rod with magical properties, and a rapier at their side.

Throne Room

The doors part to reveal the entrance to be the same as the hallway, except the walls are barren and made from marble. In fact, the whole throne room is made from nothing but polished marble, with black and dark grey swirls.

But as you walk out from the squared entrance, the ceiling shoots to dizzying heights. The throne room is shaped into a perfect octagon, with eight columns near the center of the giant room. Each column coordinates with the shape of the room, aligned where the corners of the room meet. A balcony that reaches all the way around the room, makes up the second story. It reaches out to the columns, making the ceiling under it lower, and is supported by the backside of the columns.

Each column has an identical carving of a giant spider in the center, and is highlighted by purple faerie fire, that and the glowing stairs that lead up to the matron’s throne being the only source of light in the room. Between each column hangs the black and purple banner of Rylinndar. They droop from the golden railing of the balcony.

The columns are connected to the ceiling, and support the domed ceiling in the center. The dome is made from stained glass, and has a swirl of a multitude of colors that range from light pink to dark purple. The frame work is thick and black, and has been shaped into the form of a spider.

At the very front of the room sets the throne. A short row of stairs lead up to it, and the raised platform curves into the shape of a C. Two female drow guards, the matron’s sworn protectors, stand on both sides of the throne. They wear identical clothing and armor to that of the ladies standing outside. However, these women wear their hair tied back in a single braid. They don a war helmet, and carry a broad sword on their back, along with other hidden weapons.

A giant rug in the shape of a spider web lies at the foot of the stairs. Two sets of stairs on either side of the one’s leading up to the throne, curve around the two pillars near the throne, and lead up to the balcony. Black and purple rubs are placed on these sets of stairways.

The wall spaces underneath the platform, between the columns, are identical doors like the entrance door. The Rylinndar symbol has been carved in the center, likewise, they open up just like the entrance doors.

It was extremely dangerous, foolish even, for a matron mother to leave her house without personal guards to accompany her. Rival matrons and other enemies the powerful matriarchs had acquired would seize this opportunity to eliminate their hated superiors.

Matron Ulvira understood these risks better than anyone else. It was because of those reasons that Ulvira had personally seen to the protection of her important guests.

As soon as the drifdisks bearing the matron mothers was out of their guards' sight, eight figures emerged from their hiding spots and formed a tight, defensive diamond around each matron.

Their glossy, jet-black armor gleamed from the off-cast of the city lights. Black and purple piwafwis with the five headed Scourge of Fangs embroidered in the center claimed them as soldiers of House Rylinndar. All of them were female. This arrangement too, was made by Ulvira. She did it so the guest matrons would understand the personal sacrifice Ulvira would be making against her own house should the women come under some horrific misfortune while being held under her conduct.

Matron Tor'Afin's group of warriors included Matron Ulvira's very own first daughter. Aunthrae Rylinndar led the other seven women. Being a Rylinndar female, she towered over them all, and walked with long graceful strides. Her armor was light for the occasion and she kept her silvery curls back in an unkempt bun. Despite her confident stroll she kept her hands firmly on the handles of the scimitars she carried at the hip.

Aunthrae cast the matron a smug look over her shoulder. Obviously, she knew something Lariexith didn't. However, the First Daughter of Rylinndar didn't seem interested in carrying on a conversation. She turned her attention away, senses directed elsewhere. What Ulvira knew and Lariexith didn't, was, at this time, Lolth held the Matron of Tor'Afin in higher favor than even the current ranking matron of the Second House.

None of the guards spoke, their faces were hidden beneath the helms they wore. Slaves, commoners, and nobles alike quickly parted to the side to give the entourage more than enough room to pass. They stared at the group in open awe and curiosity, forgetting to avert their eyes. Other matron mothers left the sanctuary of their throne rooms to peer down from their balconies as the two parties made their way around the city. Plain incredibility and jealousy showed through the cold stares aimed at the two matriarchs.

The Rylinndar rarely ever held an audience with other such important figures in their own castle. Rarer still, was having two of Ulorbbath's most powerful matrons together under one roof. Everyone, even the lowliest creatures that called Ulorbbath their home knew that this meeting would have some disastrous outcome. But what and whom would be affected by this they did not yet know. Rumors to the reason behind this meeting was already spreading across the city, like poison in the bloodstream.

Upon entering Swindler's Pass, the tunnel that connected the plateau with the rest of L'Orbben Har'ol, Tor'Afin's entourage slowly began to creep up behind Hun'Afin's. The Second House's escort was a black moving mass in the near distance, until they had caught up and were marching beside their fellow sisters. Aunthrae departed from her group, taking the front of both parties as they crossed the Spy's Perch.

The matrons could look out from their seats and see the people of Ulorbbath milling about in the far distance below. At the northern end of the plateau the mouth of a cave was found. The opening was made large enough by magic to allow large groups of caravans to enter. Adamantium bars closed off the entrance. More Rylinndar guards stood behind the prison-like barrier. Upon seeing Aunthrae the soldiers bowed, and stepped to the side. One of them tried to use his magical brooch to open the gate, but Ulvira's daughter only barked at him to get out of the way, preferring to open it herself. It did. The bars slid into the rock, up and down, in a pattern.

The tunnel was wide like the mouth of the cave, and alight with glowing purple faerie fire that danced from torches on the tunnel walls.
They were led into a cavern with a high domed ceiling. A cavern large enough to hold the Rylinndar estate with extra room to be spared. There, the groups were brought up to the thirty foot gate that stretched from one side of the cavern to the other. Upon the square columns that dissected the wall every six feet hung prisoners of the Rylinndar house.

This was one of the punishments Ulvira had inducted once she had come to rule. The prisoner's tongues were cut out, their ankles and fingers smashed so that no spells could be performed. They were impaled through the stomach and left to rot to death.

The two groups passed through without pause until they reached one of the entrance ways into the compound. There, the guards departed with the dismissal from the first daughter, the glowing blue disks accompanying them. Aunthrae disappeared as another drow female came out from a passageway. "Matron Mothers," She said politely. "From here you will walk on foot. This way please."

She led the two matrons through a series of confusing corridors and halls until they reached the main hall that led into the throne room. Murals of horrific blood shedding were painted on the walls, and oddly enough the place had a faint metallic smell, as if the red paint used was actually blood.

Which it was.

The sentinels that guard the entrance to the throne room thumped the bottom of their tentacle rods against the floor, and the door to the room slowly slid into the wall. A domed ceiling loomed high over the matrons' heads. Eight giant columns supported the domed center, leaving the center of the room open like a court yard. Beyond the pillars, raised upon a spider shaped dais, sat Matron Ulvira.

The Matron Mother of the First House sat straight legged on her throne. Her hands rested in her lap. Her posture made it seem she was well at ease, but her back remained stiff and her eyes burned like hot-red coals. Behind them, the doors to throne room shut with a loud boom, echoing into the unnerving silence. A few moments passed---Ulvira leaned forward in her seat, her hands gripping the arm rests of her throne, and said in a surprisingly soft voice, "Welcome, Matrons of Hun'Afin and Tor'Afin. We have much to discuss."

There seemed to be a slight pause after Ulvira had given her greeting. Which would be pretty natural of course being the Matrons of second and fourth house had been summoned and shown to the first matron in such haste.

Her hands held behind her back and sort of balancing her weight on her heels, Lari gave a quick quirk of a brow as she did a sideways glance at the other Matron, Lariexith quickly looked back at Ulvira and beamed a wide smile as she went into an elaborate bow, "Pleasure to meet you at last, Matron Ulvira. I certainly like what you've done to the place; pretty snazzy, if I might say. I only wish I could have been dressed more appropriately for your presence. Your summoning was rather... unexpected."

Lari bit her bottom lip to portray her uncomfortable state. The Matron was dressed in her usual, rebellious attire. She wore a black armored mini skirt adorned by rubies. A black leather corset laced with what appeared to be cobwebs but shined like metal. Atop her shoulders were narrow, pointed, metallic pauldrons. Her wrists bore black armor bracers with the same cut rubies embedded in them. Two or three finger guards encased her fingers on each hand. And her legs and feet were black cobweb stockings with black leather boots plated with the same metal that made her pauldrons. As a Matron her sense of style could be alarming to many. More so, was her hair. Done up in her usual spikey pigtails.

Chalthara had never been to the First House, although she was (or had been, at least) the first daughter of one of the noble houses. She supposed that this meeting should be considered an achievement on her part. She was the Matron of the second most powerful house in Ulorbbath, and all she had to do was think of a way to get out of her obligation to Veldrin, or at the very least try to thwart some of his decisions, while keeping the rank she had obtained with his help. That could come later, though. For now she was enjoying the sheer power and splendor of the First House's compound...and of course trying to look the part of the powerful Matron she was supposed to be.

Perhaps it was good that she had been away from Ulorbbath for so long after the fall of House Kenrahel. It was a lower house, so Matron Ulvira probably wouldn't recognize her; and even if someone else did, they would not dare to question the head of House Hun'Afin.

Chalthara was duly impressed by the audience chamber, and smiled faintly in appreciative silence before Ulvira spoke.

Unlike the Matron of Tor'Afin, Chalthara's clothes were as neat and pristine as ever. It seemed that nothing was out of place on her person. Her robes were of a deep green, sparkling with faint touches of magic, and her long hair fanned out behind her held only by two rather randomly placed barrettes. Despite her unusually short height, she held herself proudly.

When addressed by Ulorbbath's ruler, she inclined her head and upper body respectfully. "It is indeed a pleasure to make your acquaintance. From your urgency, I suspect that there is no time for idle conversation. What are the matters that must be addressed, reverent Matron Ulvira?"
