Hi everyone!!! Recently I got selected to play in my states District 3 band. When I go, I have to audition for regional band. This is my first time being selected to play in something this big, and i'm really excited. However, I'm also really nervous. (About the auditioning part!) I have to audition in front of 15 judges who are extremely strict.

I've been working really really hard on my music. Does anyone have any advice for me with my audition?

Thanks in advance!!! smile

For one, congrats ^^

It all depends on you, somethings work for others and not for some.
Like for me for my first few auditions (no joke) my nerves were so bad I had to take cold medicine, I dont suggest that but just saying lol.

Scales are a must obviously so make sure you have those

If you're sightreading, there's not much you can do for that rather than just play random things and check your accuracy

Take your time!!!, they're strict but they'll see you more professionally if you take the time to make sure you're going to do it right than rush because you know their waiting

Play in front of random friends to get used to how you'll react, get them to find you at the least opportune times and tell you to play unexpectedly

Breathe, that messes my nerves up more, but it works for a lot of people

Try sitting, standing, moving (depends on what you play I suppose) but see what works best

Dont psych yourself out. Judges are people, if you see them then just remember they were in your shoes. If you dont see them then assume it's people you know and are comfortable with. That's always helped me.

Dress up and be confident and proud of what you've done. You'll feel good about yourself, even if you have to fake it, but you shouldn't have to if you've worked hard.

I know you've probably heard all that, but it's always good to hear it from different places. It's more what you're comfortable with and your reaction.
GOOD LUCK!!!!!! and You'll do great ^^

Just one thing.
My friend gave me this peice of advice when I was auditioning, and it's really usefull.

Don't pick something too hard. If you pick somethng crazy and can't play it, its not as good as playing something a little easier, but really well.

Of course this doesn't apply if you have already chosen/can't choose the peice.

-Clean your horn and get used to the new sound and feel if it was really dirty. I play trumpet and just now cleaned out my horn( it was disgusting in there) and when i thought i was going to play an Ab concert....it came out as a C concert. VERY different there.
-Be aware of exactly WHICH scale you are supposed to play at what time. You play a wrong scale correctly, and it still won't count (they're professionals, they can tell by the pitch difference from the last one you played)
-Practice the stuff you don't know on a piece, rather than stuff you think sounds good. The tricky stuff, take slow at first and slowly speed it up. Then combine it with the phrases before and after to make sure you can play it in an already set time.
- Don't worry about a note you missed or something you played well. It WILL distract you and cause you to mess something else up.
-KEEP PLAYING NO MATTER WHAT! I can't stress this one enough.
-And if you do really well, brag really loudly to scare the competition so you are assured a better spot(LOL jk.)

Draw pictures of Paula, Simon, and Randy and tape them on the wall and practice like that. And then see what they'd say.

Use Simon's advice most, because his negativity will make you wanna be even better to prove him wrong. Even though it'll be you... judging.

Another thing you could do is get a camera and record it and then listen to yourself and notice what you do wrong. It's easier to place mistakes when you know it's wrong and what exactly you have to fix.
