drum playing -- "Dad always says he knows me better than I know myself, and I never really believed him until last Christmas. He bought me this SWEET a** drum set and I was so happy I cried. 'Dad,' I said, 'How did you know its what I always wanted?' and he just smiled at me and, yeah, pretty much I love him BIG TIME. The drum set isn't brand new or anything, 'cause we can never afford anything shiny, and one of the cymbals is broken. But that's a-okay, because I love it and the bass drum still works AWESOME. It makes a big noise, and I like that. I practice a lot, and John Jr. makes me really angry when he walks by with earplugs and a scowl on his face. He doesn't know it yet, but I am going to be famous and then I'm not going to share any of my dough with him."

skateboarding -- "This is a lot of fun. Like riding roller coasters and paintball, but free. I used to suck, but now I'm really good, and I take my board everywhere with me. Its not in that great of shape, but I love it anyways. And now I am better than everyone at the skatepark, even. MUCH better than that fool Billy Robbins with his shiny board who got his girlfriend to break my nose for beating him. It pissed me off, a lot, but it was also kinda not that big o' deal because I always hurt myself trying out new cool stunts and, as my papa would say, 'Always flirting with disaster!' He doesn't know it, but he doesn't know what fun is. But, anyways, I gave her two black eyes and a split lip for hitting me and then Billy dumped her because she wasn't pretty anymore."

work -- "I work at Big Willy's Record store, which is across the street from our apartment. Big Willy is a big hairy man with yellow teeth and strangely long fingernails. He is really nice, though, and he knows a TON about music. He always gives me time off when I'm sick, or hurt and he understands that dad can't afford a babysitter, so he lets John Jr come to work with me sometimes. Big Willy is cool. I'd punch anybody who robbed his store... and I have my fingers crossed that I'll be able to use some of the money I earn from this job to pay for drum lessons, and then I will throw out John Jr's stupid earplugs."

starting fires, blowing s**t up, burning herself -- "These are not really hobbies. I mean, I don't practice them. They just sorta happen, 'cause I don't like reading warning labels and s**t. Dad insists that those are there for a reason and that I really need to start paying attention to them, but I haven't killed anyone yet and he's bought a ton of fire extinguishers so its aaaaall good. I did singe my eyebrows off once, but they grew back, so that's okay. I used to carry a pack of matches with me everywhere, but dad kept taking them away from me so now I don't bother. Also, I get this guy who lurks outside Big Willy's store to buy me fireworks. I don't know his name, but I call him Hairy Pete because he's hairy and he looks like he should be called Pete. Also, he gets me some pretty nice fireworks. I like shooting them off the roof. They're loud and spectacular. Like me."

Virtues:

loud and proud-- Vanessa knows who she is, loves where she comes from, and isn't afraid to tell it like it is. An extrovert to the extreme; she's stubbornly confident, pushy and a friend to everyone and anyone that stays out of her way. An aspiring leader and a girl who likes to dominate, Vanessa is naturally attracted to submissive personalities and people willing to follow her. She lives for having cheerleaders. This is not to say that she can't have friendships with characters that won't yield to her forceful personality. She is too proud to be so inconsiderate, and regards strength and power (and, consequently, characters that embody these two qualities) with respect. It is just that she prefers to lead rather than to follow.

fierce -- A staunch admirer of strength and power, Vanessa does her best to live up to her own ideals. She is steadfastly committed to every cause that strikes her fancy, and longs to, most of all, do good in the world. Expressive and emotional, Vanessa's heartfelt desire to be good sometimes copulates with self-destruction, but this is not born from pessimism. Rather, it is the child of faith. Vanessa isn't above sacrificing herself for the greater good. Is there, after all, truly any display of strength greater than dying for what you believe in?

protective -- Honourable and affectionate, it doesn't take much for Vanessa to consider someone a friend (especially if they agree with her) and she is swift to attachment. She can not abide the suffering of loved ones or even casual acquaintances, and is passionately protective of all things she believes to be good, especially if they can not defend themselves.

adrenaline-junkie -- Competitive and aggressive, Vanessa's got a lot of pent up energy, which is channeled wonderfully into all kinds of sports. She's a girl who likes to live on the wild side, and she adores games and activities that get her adrenaline pumping. Feel like sky-diving without a parachute? Got a sudden hankering for shark wrestling? Wanna climb mount everest naked? "Yes, that's a bomb and I know we're supposed to clip -this- wire, but let's just snip this one instead and see what happens, kay? I wanna ride the wave of the explosion, baby!"

Flaws:

outspoken -- Brash and opinionated, Vanessa's loud-mouth is infamous for getting her into trouble. This is uncool because she is not witty, nor is she a quick-thinker and, more than anything in the world, Vanessa hates to lose. While she might enjoy defending the unjustly accused in court, Vanessa would, even after her impassioned ramblings and slamming her fist against the table, make a very poor lawyer, no matter how dedicated.

loose-cannon -- Temper. Temper. Temper. Vanessa's is on a very short, although, thankfully, thick string. Easily provoked and swiftly irritated, this girl's anger tends to build up over time. It accumulates, sometimes quickly, sometimes not-so-quickly, but almost always rears its ugly head in a veritable explosion of fury. Not naturally clever in the first place, Vanessa's stubborn anger can make it difficult for her to think clearly, and she can be (depending on it's intensity) blinded by rage.

impatient -- 'Later' isn't a word Vanessa often uses, or likes to hear. She likes things done, and she likes them done 'now.' Pushy and obstinate, Vanessa understands that, sometimes, if you want it done right, you've just gotta do it yourself. Idle behaviour makes her nauseous, and Vanessa can get very bossy when someone starts pushing her buttons.

dense -- Thinking is not one of Vanessa's favourite past times. In fact, its not something she does very much of at all. Bored by silly, useless things like reading and paying attention in class, or listening when she's told something; Vanessa is very much an idiot. This, combined with everything else, makes her a danger to herself and to others.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION

Eyes: golden, turned slightly downwards

Hair: short, afro-ish, frizzy, dark natural auburn

Face: heart-shaped face, tanned skin, bottom lip is fleshier than top lip, mouth is wide

Body: healthy, strong

Fashion: nothing frilly, lacy, or really girly. think comfort, and sporty things. sneakers, yoga pants, hoodies, t-shirts, etc..

Father:

John Rae (37): A tall, handsome man with black hair and dark eyes. John is an honest, soft-spoken man who has no trouble looking for (and finding!) the good in everyone. He's a retired almost-pro-baseball player, turned carpenter who writes children stories in his spare-time and adores his own progeny. Not a rich man by any means, John does what he can for his family and always puts their needs above his own.

Vanessa's relationship with her father is usually warm, occasionally strained. She has none of his caution and thinks he worries too much. They both have explosive tempers. This makes it difficult for them to see eye to eye all of the time.

Mother: (deceased)

Martha Brown-Rae (would be 39): Short in stature, with thick hair traditionally kept tied back in braids, Martha was a professional dancer and a strikingly graceful woman. Very feminine and lady-like, with a good-natured laugh that shook the floor. In life, she was a doting mother and a very good wife. Genuine and kind, Martha encouraged Vanessa to always stand up for what she believes in. She passed away in childbirth at the age of 30.

Vanessa's relationship with her mother was very healthy. For the first couple years of her life, Martha was Vanessa's whole life. The death of her mother was devastating for Vanessa.

Brother:

John Jr. Rae (9): John Jr. is a happy-go-lucky, athletic little boy who admires his sister and looks up to his father. He loves strawberry ice cream and video games, as well as puppies and playing with his big sister's drum set. Wide-eyed and innocent, with a dare-devil streak almost identical to Vanessa's; John Jr. is very adventurous and, fortunately, wiser than his big sister.

Vanessa's relationship with John Jr. is protective. While, at first she resented him and blamed him for the death of their mother, she has come to love and to adore him. He is her whole world, and Vanessa would either kill or die for John Jr.

I think you just won this character in the student competition so I'll just give you some critique on the senshi part. (Also, congratulations!)

Her challenge makes me lol, probably because my mind is in the gutter. There might be a less innuendo-ridden one, unless that was your intent. Maybe something like: "Prepare for meltdown!" Or something melt-y. I think the "eruption" part makes sense, but I just keep giggling when I read it.

For her attacks:

For Justice Steam, can she direct where the explosion happens? You said that it "hopefully" enter below the opponent. Perhaps it will only happen in a ten foot radius surrounding her? Perhaps multiple jets of hot air shoot up? Dunno. I just think you should try to define it a little more clearly. If she can't direct it, then you might want to define that it happens in a controlled area, and that there are a lot of little noises that are aimed to throw off the opponent from knowing where the eruption will come from.

For all the attacks, you might want to put in a little blurb about its weaknesses. What happens if she were, I don't know, fighting in water? That's kind of a crappy example, but I hope you see what I mean. If she is struck, will the attack be derailed? Is there a specific amount of time that she needs before her attack can start? It might be good to just throw in a few reminders of how the attack has flaws, if that makes sense.

I really love that the third attack chooses its direction based on where her fury is directed. That is just... super cool. Are her allies immune to this? Or just her? Does she have to be furious for this to work? The madder she is, does it get stronger too?
