The cheetah trotted off the pride lands, the mid-morning sun warm upon his coloured coat. He'd been luckier than some of his siblings, inheriting the paler greens and whites of his parents, which meant more aversion to the heat of the day. As it was, the red eyed cheetah still couldn't believe his lot in life. . . .

How far had his paws taken him from the territories of his home? Where had his siblings drifted and how were his parents faring? The young male understood he was far from home, but he found the lands of the Kitwana'antara peaceful, despite the unrest and disease within. When he had first stumbled across the pride weeks previous, he'd been concerned by the stories they told. . . of plague, of war, of shameful deeds brought to the surface.

But the fear of disease and death gave way to need; there was a need to belong, to be together, to be as one with the pride. Ezequiel had lingered and watched with fascination as the sick lions helped one another in what ways they could, aiding each other through the pain and heart ache, and relying heavily on non-lions for further support. Despite the pain, there was a great love at the heart of the pride, and it was something that called to him.

This was where he belonged, where he was meant to be. Not only was the pride a cohesive unit, but they respected non-lions and welcomed them anxiously. Besides, where else might he find honor in his stealth and swiftness? To scout the lands for outsiders, to keep tabs on neighboring prides, and work with the border guards suited Ezequiel just fine. . .

And today was no exception.

Still quite bemused at where his paws had taken him, the young cheetah began his rounds starting at the borders and moving out. Some might call his work monotonous, but Ezequiel enjoyed his daily explorations; he hadn't memorized all of the prides territory yet, nor had he come to know the surrounding lands as well as he soon would.

Skirting through the tall grasses, the male kept his eyes keen, his ears peeled, and his attention alert as he sought out any changes. Who knew when life might stir up trouble. . .?

Many moons had passed since Shai-Nefer had last walked these lands. She had left in hopes of finding her missing family, her brothers and sisters that had fled after their mother had passed away. It was hard to admit it, but the elderly female had been the only thing keeping them together. They were too different from one another. Still Shai had hoped that at least one or two might return with her, but she had not found even one of them. She was chasing after ghosts, and that made her guilt over leaving grow. She hoped they were alive at least.

She had been away far too long and she knew the pride needed her, more specifically her talent as a healer. It had been a hard enough decision to leave and she had been away longer than she had intended. However, it was a journey she needed to make in order to ease her restless spirit. She had tried to find them and she hadn't, so be it. Now she could return home and tend to her duties. She smiled happily at the thought of being reunited with all her friends.

The scout had no idea who Shai was, so when he spotted the figure of a wild dog upon the horizon, he instantly became more alert. Standing tall amidst the grasses, wanting to make his presence perfectly known, the young cheetah wondered how this other might respond. The reactions were mixed, though the plague didn't effect non-lions, many still avoided the ride to be extra safe.

Part of Ezequiel couldn't blame them. . . . With all the heavy tidings and foreboding that often lingered over the pride, it wasn't necessarily paradise. But for those who got to know the pride and to see first hand the ties that bound them together. . . .

Well. . . . .

It was hard to not want to be a part of the family. Which is why Ezequiel chose to stay. He could be part of something bigger, help others that genuinely needed it.

Hopefully, this newcomer came with no ill-will. Red eyes bright, the young scout paused in his approach, not wanting to scare the stranger off if she were a skiddish sort. "Greetings and salutations!" He grinned, tail twitching lightly behind him. "Well met and good tidings, stranger. . . ." His good humor and fanciful greeting certainly had charm and hopefully would prove that he had no ill-intent.

Shai came to a slow stop as she saw the cheetah's tall form. His pelt was not familiar to her and she sniffed at the air, hoping that his cent might spark a memory. No, nothing. Her ears twitching, she continued watching him without moving to come closer. She wondered what this stranger was doing in the lands and if by any chance he had joined the pride while she was gone. But they were at the borders so it was just as likely that he was just a rogue, hopefully a nice and friendly one.

She fumbled over what to say and just as she made up her mind he spoke. She smiled lightly at his fancy words, feeling a bit relieved. Shai herself had never had such a way with words. Being a healer she was more short and to the point and with a smaller vocabulary. Well, unless it came to herb lore, but it was her job to know those things so it didn't really count.

"Greetings. Good tidings to you as well!" She nodded with a welcoming smile, showing that she hadn't come looking for trouble either. "My name is Shai-Nefer." She offered, hoping to receive the male's name in return. She felt funny calling someone 'stranger' or 'sir'.
