You see guys at the beach topless, exposing theirs, why can't woman have that same equal right? How is it even a private part to begin with? Guys may get turned on by them, but that still doesn't mean it's a private part. It's just another one of those things that doesn't make sense in life.

I believe I read somewhere that here (Quebec, Canada), women can legally go topless where men can. It's just unsual because women wouldn't feel comfortable doing so, I guess.

RainingCrimson I believe I read somewhere that here (Quebec, Canada), women can legally go topless where men can. It's just unsual because women wouldn't feel comfortable doing so, I guess. I think the only reason why they would feel uncomfortable is a few guys along her way would most likely other look or stare, natural for men to do such a thing, but I could also feel for the woman as well and probably wouldn't want attention like that. We speak of equal-ness among gender and yet, in America, men can go topless and women can't? Or how a girl could hit a guy and yet, that guy can't hit the girl back, without either feeling guilty, or having the surrounding people getting on that guys case. And from a guy's perspective, it's not indecent exposure to show a woman's breasts in public, unless that woman is really old. I know, I sound sort of like a pervert, but I think I'm making valid points.

I never understood this either...
I suppose that if women were walking around topless all the time, it would eventually hurt or do some damage. Boobs can't hold themselves up, you know!
But that's not really a reason why it should be illegal...
I mean a really fat guy can have bobs that look the same as a woman's, but because he has a p***s, it's ok?
I don't understand. And Feminists probably are against the whole "allowing toplessness" issue because they might feel it's going to end in sexual harassment or whatever... [I really don't know] but I really dislike feminists so...
Let's go topless sometimes, kay?

[I really don't know] but I really dislike feminists so... Let's go topless sometimes, kay? You might want to read up on feminism before you start making statements like that. wink Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FeminismQuote: The term Feminism can be used to describe a political, cultural or economic movement aimed at establishing more rights and legal protection for women. Feminism involves political and sociological theories and philosophies concerned with issues of gender difference, as well as a movement that advocates more gender-specific rights for women and campaigns for women's rights and interests. As for why women's breasts are considered private parts, I think it's just the sexualization and stigmatization put on them by society and many cultures. It's ok for women to breastfeed (except for the odd person who gets offended), but otherwise they're seen as sexual objects that are meant to be hidden or used to tease/tempt (bathing suits, magazines, pictures, etc). As a woman, it doesn't bother me that I can't go topless in public. If I were to go topless in public, and be comfortable with it, it would be only at a nude beach, where I'd expect to be treated like an equal and like any guy on the beach. Otherwise, I like to keep my body private, but that's just me. Perhaps if men had breasts, they might feel the same?

Valgex And from a guy's perspective, it's not indecent exposure to show a woman's breasts in public, unless that woman is really old. Indecent exposure means to show a private part that it isn't socially acceptable to show. So whether the woman is "really old" or not doesn't really matter. Whether men would enjoy it or not, it's not socially acceptable for a 20 year old to be topless in most places, so it would still be indecent exposure.

Karzlee I suppose that if women were walking around topless all the time, it would eventually hurt or do some damage. Boobs can't hold themselves up, you know! Breasts are natural, bras are not. We've had breasts for a lot longer than we have had bras. That means breasts were designed to stand alone. wink There are some cultures where women never wear bras at all. Now you might be thinking, "Yeah, I've seen the National Geographic pictures, their breasts are all saggy though!" That is not the effect of going braless though. That is the effect of having many children. There are some studies that suggest that wearing a bra may actually be against our best interest. Some doctors and researchers believe that when we don't wear a bra, our ligaments have to support the breast themselves. That gives out ligaments a bit of it a workout and makes them stronger and better able to support the breast. Researchers in one study found that when they asked women to go braless for six months, their breasts were actually better supported, perkier, and fuller. The women also said they did not experience as much discomfort or tenderness as they used to, even before their period. But whether we definitely need to throw away our bras is still up in the air. Although the study's results sound interesting, the study was too small to make any definitive claims on. I have large breasts, but I haven't worn in a bra in about a year. It felt really weird at first, but now I love it. I don't notice any difference in perkiness, but then again, I didn't take a before and after measurement or anything. I definitely do notice less discomfort and tenderness though, including before my period.

Nikolita As for why women's breasts are considered private parts, I think it's just the sexualization and stigmatization put on them by society and many cultures. Exactly. It's all about what society says we can and cannot show. Yes, it a double standard. No, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense. After all, breasts are perfectly natural and not inherently sexual. Their main purpose is feeding babies, not being sexy. But we, as a society, have sexualized them. It doesn't bother me much that we have this double standard about who can show their nipples and who can't though. I don't think it'll last long anyway to be honest. Just about 100 years ago a woman couldn't even show her ankle without it being scandalous. Since ankles weren't seen in public, they became sexualized too. Almost any part of the body can be sexualized if it's a rare treat to see it. Now a woman can show everything except her a**s, v****a, and nipples. We've come a long way! xp In another 100 years I would not be surprised to see more topless women. Heck, we might even see more bottomless people at this rate! xp If this is a topic you're interested in, I'd recommend looking through http://www.007b.com/ ( NSFW PG-13 warning for pictures of nonsexual breasts). It is an educational site designed to remind people what breasts are for (babies), to get some of the sexual stigma off breasts, to encourage women to breastfeed, and to show women what normal breasts look like. A lot of girls wonder if their breasts are normal. So women from all over send in pictures of their real and nonsexual breasts (I sent mine in!) to show others what is normal!

I had quite a lot of trouble with that in gym class once, where we had to run laps. I was wearing a bra for shirts that show a lot of cleavage. NOT a good idea. It's useless while running, they just bounce out of it constantly. That was pretty painful and especially embarrassng since I was wearing a tight shirt. sweatdrop As for not wearing bras... I like wearing one because I think it gives them a better shape, it's more comfy for certain positions but when it's time to go to bed and I take it off, my breasts feel so heavy and kind of hurt. I guess it would be better not to wear one?

I found and feel boxers to be better than underwear. Those areas need space for better comfort and health of those particular body parts.

I read somewhere that the double-standard may have originated from the church sanctioning breasts as sacred, because of their ability to breastfeed, etc. But I wouldn't take that as fact.
Human females' breasts are the only breasts in the animal kingdom that stay large all the time. Other mammals' breasts only enlarge when they are feeding their young, and shrink down the rest of the time. There is a theory that ours are so large because we evolved to walk upright, and we needed a replacement sexual signal for our butts, because our butts were not displayed as much anymore. So our boobs may have evolved to mimic our asses, haha. (And therefore, may actual be much more sexual than some think.)
Even if it became legal to display breasts in public, I think it would take a very long time before most women would do it.

!namorata So our boobs may have evolved to mimic our asses, haha. (And therefore, may actual be much more sexual than some think.) It's certainly possible! The fact that our breasts are so large really does make it seem like breasts have developed into a legitimate, natural, sexual signal. But then again there are the tribes where the women are topless all the time. And I doubt the men all think, "Oh, my god a breast!.....Holy crap another breast!...Wowza there's a..." all day either. xp It seems like once you get used to it, it packs less of a punch. So I'm really torn on whether we're truly wired to see breasts as sexual things or if we've just sexualized them since we don't see them all the time in public. But then again, some of those people seem to walk around bottomless a lot too. And while the people probably don't think, "Teeheehee, I just saw a p***s," we know that the p***s is a legitimate and natural sexual thing! So I don't know. xp It is pretty odd that we're the only species that seems so obsessed with the breast though! As for the walking upright and needing something to sort of mimic our butts, I've heard people say that's why some people are drawn so much to lips as well and that's why big rep lips are often found especially attractive! xp

Here is where I got the breast/buttocks theory:
http://obituarytypo.blogspot.com/2009/11/10-unknown-things-about-sexual-biology.html
(the female edition).
Both the male and female edition are very fun/interesting to read.
