Just a musing by a witch craving out her own path smile
Alright, to continue on from a topic I had written before about the Dark Night of the Soul, and going with your gut when it comes to practices and traditions, I have a new little bit of musing to you to digest.
It was a funny little sync really, when I saw my flavor of the week experiment materialize before me onto paper. I was reading Witches and Pagans magazine, and the article was on something called "Genii (or Genius) Loci", or "Local Spirits". I had been playing with the idea for a little bit now, and only a few days ago had I decided to experiment with the local energies and research about what the local(est) /Native Americans believed in. Now, I probably won't find concrete answers on the latter, but I think theres something to be had in investing time and energy in getting to know your semi-invisible neighborhood spirits!
Comparable to the "Lares" of Roman mythos, Local spirits and energies can come from anywhere that feels significant, house or no. I live only blocks away from two very large, very resonant bays of water. Theres a patch of forest that edges my house and extends on for quite a ways. We have huge sand dunes and twisty rivers that could drown you in a minute. Heres little ol me, calling out to the powers that be (that 1.originated thousands of miles away and 2.Are from a culture I can only know so much about the more I think about it), when there are loads of powers and energies to work with all around me to begin with!
Now, I'm not saying that someone parking it in the middle Nevada shouldn't feel an affinity to/not worship say...a Hindi deity just because its not part of their culture. Heck, with the level of diversity and interest based enthusiasm, its hard to peg down what American culture (or any culture) really is anymore. I'll never stop calling out to Hecate before I do a tarot spread, nor will I stop making offerings of thankfulness to Hathor for me and Byrons fantastic relationship. Just that perhaps, rather than feel the silence I get from some gods and goddesses, maybe draw from the spirits of this massive water source (which I KNOW has an awesome spirit dwelling inside), or see whats "living" in the forests and winds.
So it will be an experience, I know that much. I'm excited to see what this area has to offer (despite that I've lived up here for most of my life), and I encourage even the most steadfast traditionalists in here to try this idea a little. Love and light!
