Zachary hadn't heard from his sister lately. He knew how Evie could be, getting caught up in all of her extracurriculars, but it didn't occur to him that something could have been wrong at Barren Pines, so he'd thought that by maybe entering the Battleship tournament together, they would get some time to talk, even if it was over the internet. Instead, the first message he'd received was about an internet game with some Barren Pines student named 'Marit'. Zachary wasn't sure what to think about this opponent, considering that he couldn't even ascertain the gender of a name like that, much less heritage.
Staring at his computer screen, he placed the final few pieces on his board with careful clicks of his mouse, then stared at the chatboard to the side of the game itself, wondering if his opponent was even online. Who knew? Maybe this Marit even knew his sister. Maybe it would be a way to keep in touch with her after all. Clicking on the chatboard, he figured that he would initiate contact.

Marit was so excited, she and Leonette had been talking about Battleship just the other day, and here it was! She needed to start thinking about this stuff more often, maybe something else to do would surface. It was a welcome reprieve, with all the crazy happenings at school it was nice to get involved in something no holds barred, no strings attached, just fun. She would have rather done it in person, but with all the meningitis spreading around...
Her opponent was Zachary Esther, whom she'd never heard of in the history of hearing of people. She was familiar with Evelyn Esther though, and planned to find out if they were related. She hastily placed her virtual ships, lacking any real cohesive strategy, while she signed into the chat where a message from message from Zachary was already waiting.
MBohman94:Hi! How're you? This is Marit, obviously.
She clicked on square E-5 as she waited for his response.

Zachary watched as the E-5 square turned from blue to an angry red color, though thankfully his ships remained untouched. He wondered vaguely if he should alert his opponent to the miss, though he was sure that the software would do that for him. A new response popped up, though it was hardly helpful to the mystery opponent's profile, leaving him no clues as to who they were. He clicked on the D-7 square, waiting for it to register with the site as he began to type again.
Esther915: pretty good. this is zachary esther. do you know evie? she's my sister. sings a lot.
Zachary wondered if it was considered good chat-etiquette to capitalize one's words, the way you were supposed to when typing a report. Ultimately, he decided that hitting the shift key took effort, and it was just a little game. You don't use caps on the first chat, the same way you don't kiss on the first date. Or something. Zachary frowned at the screen: he'd hoped to at least be socially competent on the internet.

The unassuming E-5 Square clicked and returned to it's blank state, a little circle indicating the miss. Ah well. First turn, she would have been lucky to get a hit.
MBohman94:I think so! I'm pretty sure she's in my science class. I don't really talk to her though. But I see her around?
Her own D-7 lit up like the same angry fire engine for a moment, but it was a miss. The square faded right back to blue. She clicked F-5
(;; Sorry for taking so long. <3)
