Quinn had fallen asleep on the couch for awhile, while Addie played quietly at her feet. The toddler eyed the phone every once in a while, wanting Quinn to call Caoi and Arkie, but knowing that she would be in supreme trouble if she messed with the phone by herself.

After about an hour, Quinn awoke with a snort and fumbled for the phone, pressing a button to illuminate it's screen so she could check the time. It was 10am. which was a much friendlier time for making phone calls. Yawning and stretching, she sat up and looked down at Addie. "Do you still want me to call Caoi? We don't even know if there is trouble. She's probably fine. Out surfing or something."

Adelaide regarded Quinn stoically. "Call, mama. Call."

And so she did, searching through the list of numbers in her phone until she found the appropriate one. She dialed and then waited.

One ringy ding. Two ringy dings...

It was the morning after Sei and Dustin had come over to talk about all the insanity that had passed. When the house was once again empty, Caoimhe and Gristla curled together in the middle of the living room floor. They were desperate to be reminded of one another, to feel the bond that had once pulsated so strongly between them.

The phone rang.

Caoimhe nudged Gristla.
Gristla nudged back.
Caoimhe kicked her in the side.
Gristla swatted Caoimhe in the forehead, shooting her a few feet away.

"Fine," Caoi grumbled, crawling on her hands and knees toward the phone. "I'll get it this time." Inching over to the cordless receiver, Caoi knocked it out of the cradle. It clattered to the floor and Caoi let out a sharp curse. After a few more bobbles, she lifted the receiver to her mouth and let out a gruff, "Hello?" It was not friendly.

Quinny-chan
Wincing, Quinn held the phone away from her ear as she was greeted with a loud clatter upon pick-up. She waited through the muffled fumbling on the other end until she heard a familiar voice, made more so by it's gruff tone. "Uh... hi. Um, this is Quinn, Addie's guardian, and she wanted me to call you to see if you guys were ok."

Addie had come over to Quinn while she spoke and at this barest of pauses, she pulled the phone from Quinn's hand. Ignoring the glares her guardian gave her, she exclaimed, "Water Puppy?! Bad black, Puppy. Bad black. You ok? You need Addie to pro-teck you? Addie come. You be safe. Where you at? You be Puppy for Addie?" All of this was said in practically one breath, with hardly any room for Caoi to reply.

Quinn just watched the exchange with worry-tinged amusement. She was pretty sure that everything was ok. That she'd just had an asthma attack and that it had scared Addie. That everything else that had happened had just been a delusion brought on by lack of oxygen.

...But there was Sati. She seemed to think something was wrong. And that strange paper. And her charge's insistence that danger had come and that she had somehow warded it off. So she waited and watched, wanting reassurance.

In spite of herself, Caoimhe smiled. For one, she was getting much better at not dissolving into a pile of vomit each time she interacted with a child. For two -- Addie was awesome. Not only was she pretty much a death dealer, but she liked to run around naked and bother people. Clearly a kindred spirit.

"Hey, Addie," she said, rubbing at her eye with the back of her hand. "Good to see you and Quinn are okay." It hadn't really occurred to Caoi to think about the guardians of others. Hers had been attacked and blinded; that was all she could handle at once. Now with the hope Sei had given her to be rebonded, she felt as though she had the capacity to actually worry about other people too.

The water puppy thing kind of went untouched. "I'm at my house. Sei and Dustin were here yesterday. They might come back. You're welcome to come too, kid -- just let me talk to Quinn for a second?" Caoi waited, tapping a finger on the side of the phone. She needed to see if Addie or Quinn had found the weird paper. It was a link that others might not have thought of. Perhaps the younger Fa'e were being spared in all this madness?

Quinny-chan
Addie dropped the phone in Quinn's lap without a word, and disappeared into her room. The Foxlady picked it up, looked at it uncertainly, held it to her ear and said, "Hello?"

Caoimhe wiped at her eye again, tugging at the tangles of curls at her head. She needed to shower. Badly. Ever since the attack, she had been so out of it that she had totally forgotten. Wrinkling her nose at the oil in her hair, Caoi perked up when Quinn came to phone. "Hey, it's cool if she comes over. You too. My guardian is here, but some weird stuff happened. Probably best to talk about it in person." A yawn broke, and Caoi stretched up, lifting her arms above her head. She came out of it with a sigh and continued talking, "I live in the pale blue house at the corner of Seashore and Mangrove right on the eastern edge of Gambino Isle. It's not as far as the place I had my party at." Caoimhe continued the directions as best she could, filling it good scenic routes as she spoke.

In the next room, Gristla lifted her head and glanced toward Caoi. She quirked an eyebrow, but the selkie Fa'e waved her away. "Oh, and one more thing -- a lot of the Fa'e woke up with a weird paper in their hand last night. It has a riddle on it. Could you see if Addie got one? If she did, bring it." Gristla stood now, arching her back into the air. She made slow careful strides to the place where Caoi sat on the floor, and then laid down beside her, resting her massive head on the girl's leg. Out of habit, Caoi stroked the space between her ears and waited for Quinn to respond.

Quinny-chan
"Seashore and Mangrove, right, right," Quinn muttered as she wrote down the instructions Caoimhe gave. "Oh! The paper. Yeah yeah. We got one of those. I showed it to Sati this morning, but she didn't know what it was. I'll bring it."

It was then that Addie came back out of her room, naked accept for a trash can lid that she had managed to tie to her middle like a breast plate, and dragging a heavily laden bundle in one hand and her blankie in the other. "Ready, mama. Let's go."

Quinn chuckled and then said into the phone, "We'll be there in a bit. Give me a call if you need us to bring anything. Talk to you then." She hung up and turned her attentions back to Adelaide. "And where do you think you're going? You're not even dressed! And what do you have there?"

Addie looked at Quinn in puzzlement. "I too dressed!" she exclaimed, indicating her make-shift armor. "And this my stuff. I need it. For troubles." She was so serious, that Quinn decided not to argue with her.

"Well, ok. But you have to at least put pants on. I'm not taking you all the way to Gambino wearing only a trash can lid."

Addie pouted, but stomped off to her room to comply.

It had taken awhile, but Quinn had finally convinced Addie of the importance of covering your nether regions. There had only been one mini melt-down, but Quinn was OK again after a few minutes and they were out the door, diaper bag and tote of stuff in hand.

Quinn drove her beat up old Volvo to the docks and then her and Addie took a ferry out to Gambino island. Once there, Quinn rented a bike and pedaled the pair of them and all their accouterments to the address that Caoimhe had indicated. She parked her bike in front of the house and went up to knock on the door. Addie insisted on doing the honors, so those inside were gifted with quite a drum solo on the front door.

Caoimhe was fresh from the shower when she answered the door, wet hair clinging to her long sleeve brown thermal. The back of it was soaked, turning the fabric to the color of mud, but Caoi seemed unconcerned, dripping all over the floor with each step. Before peeking out, she pounded back a little rhythm to Addie and then swung the door open full-force, intending to surprise them. "HI!" she said, a little too perky for someone whose guardian had been blinded and who was at constant risk of disappearing. Lucky for Caoi, she had a short attention span, and it was just as easy to forget about her terrible looming fate as it was to wipe after peeing.

Her eyes flickered first to Addie, but popped over to Quinn. "Gristla is out on the back porch," she said, as if the whereabouts of the other guardian were the only thing that might matter to Quinn. "Did you bring the paper I asked about?" She had promised Sei that she would keep him updated, and now that she had Mrs. Kates's phone, it was much easier to do it. She stepped out of the way to let the guests instead, poking at Addie with her bare foot. For some reason, the little kid made her smile and so she found herself drawn to be more and more playful with the toddler, even though she was a child and therefore capable of inducing vomit from Caoimhe.

She smiled, bounced playfully, and waited.

Addie hopped back on her toes as the door started thumping back at her, but her shock was only momentary. As quickly as it came, it was replaced with a wide grin, her tail twitching to see her friend. "PUPPY!" she exclaimed when Caoimhe opened the door.

Quinn flashed a chagrined look at Caoimhe and then corrected Addie, "Caoimhe, Addie. Not Puppy. Caoimhe."

Adelaide frowned up at her guardian, brow wrinkling in annoyance, but she tried. "Keeeee-vuh."

Quinn nodded and smiled down at Addie and then dug in her pocket in response to the question Caoimhe had asked. "Um... yeah. Here," she replied, holding out the slip of paper to the girl.

Caoimhe liked that Addie had a nickname for her. She only wished it wasn't puppy. Having come from a planet where a species of, basically, GIANT WOLVES tried to kill her (and Gristla) repeatedly, Caoimhe didn't take kindly to most canines. When she had first met Silver, she ran away from him, and even now, she maintained a tenuous at best approval of him. He was a Fa'e after all -- even if he was a disgusting Eninac relative. When Addie said it this time, Caoimhe dragged her lips to one corner of her mouth. "What about kitty? Can I be Kitty?" She curled one arm around her waist, leaning into the door frame.

Behind her, Gristla made a noise, and despite their broken connection, Caoimhe read it loud and clear: be polite to the adult. The selkie Fa'e popped her eyes over to Quinn. "Hey, Quinn. Thanks for bringing by the mighty terror," she said, glancing back to Addie and widening her eyes in mock horror. The kid had killed an a** ton of Finfolk. Caoi would love her forever for that very reason.

Cracking a smile when Addie managed to squeak out her name, Caoi reached out to take the paper from Quinn. She read it and nodded like she understood -- which, of course, she didn't. Stepping back into the house, she motioned with her arm for Addie and Quinn to follow. "I need to text this to Dustin real quick," she said, hopping over a small foot stool to grab the cellphone off of the couch. Texting was still a challenge for the girl, but she had learned to use the camera fast enough. She snapped a photo of the paper and sent it to Dustin and Sei. Then she handed it back to Quinn.

Glancing up and down the guardian, she tried to assess her physical condition. She seemed okay, much better off than Gristla at least. "So... with this whole paper thing, um, I wanted to ask you something." Caoi was taking her time, trying to figure out how to phrase it. Her patience lasted about two seconds, and then she just blurted out, "Where you attacked by some black tentacles a few nights ago?" She quirked her head to one side, a tumble of curls falling over her shoulder.

Quinn took the slip of paper back, still not really understanding it's importance. "Black tentacles? Um well... I had this asthma attack and..."

Addie interrupted, tapping on Caoihme's leg. "Bad black, bad! Make bad dreams."

And as though that had settled it, the toddler pushed past Caoihme as she ushered them into the house, looking all around at the new to her stuff. "You no kitty," she tossed back at Caoi over her shoulder, "You Water Puppy! But Momma says no call you puppy..." It was then that she spotted Gristla and she stopped in her tracks, staring up at the large tiger-like creature. "Kee... Kee... Biiiiiiig kitty." She pointed wildly Gristla and tried to poof herself up to as big as she would go. "Kiki, big kitty no hurta you," she declared tremulously. "Everbody stand BACK!" Obviously frightened, Addie still threw her arms out, intending, however poorly, to protect the lot of them.

Caoimhe shrugged off Addie's indifference, trailing inside right behind the toddler. She nearly tripped over the little girl when she stopped dead in her tracks. At first, Caoi had no idea what was wrong and glanced back to Quinn as if she would have the answer. Gristla looked a bit confused, tilting her head. She glanced up to Caoi and spoke privately to her. I believe your friend thinks I might eat her. You used to do the same thing to other Eninacs when you were a cub. The tigress didn't really moved. She just kind of stared at Addie. For all of her intelligence, Gristla wasn't really good with children -- just Caoimhe.

So the "water puppy" stepped in.

"Addie, this is Gristla. Gristla is my guardian. She is my... Quinn." Lifting one foot, she placed it in the center of Addie's back and gave her a less-than-gentle shove. Whoops. She was still getting used to kids. Shooting a glare at Gristla, she said, "Act less scary. Act less big." Gristla let out a little grumble and then slowly laid down, folding one paw over the other. She tilted her head up to Caoimhe.

I will not roll over on my stomach. That is for mutts.

Caoimhe laughed and turned to Quinn. "I guess Gristla is a bit weird for most people. Is Addie going to lose her s**t if she starts to talk?" Not the best language choice around a toddler, but Caoi didn't seem to notice. Only Gristla let out a little snort of disapproval.

Addie had seen kitties like Gristla in her books at home. They had bigga bigga teeth and bigga bigga claws and they liked to eat meat. She was made of meat. She did not want to be eaten. So she looked at Caoimhe askance when she was informed that Gristla was to Caoihme what Quinn was to her.

She looked from Quinn, who was smiling gently, to the large feline, who had at least laid down. She still wasn't sure. "Kiki," she replied, looking up at Caoihme as if trying to explain why water is wet, "She no like Momma. She no lady. She Kitty! Biiiiig kitty! Like in my books. RRRRAR!"

She stumbled forward as Caoimhe's foot pushed her and she suddenly found herself on all fours, face to face with Gristla, her nose scant inches apart from the reclining feline's. Her eyes grew to the size of platters, but she kept her ground and whispered to the guardian, "You nice kitty? You be my friend?"

For her part, Quinn watched the exchange calmly. She was pretty sure that Addie wasn't in any danger and she appreciated her charge's independence and bravado. She had seen first hand how quickly the Fa'e grew up and she wanted her adopted daughter to be able to look out for herself. Also, there really wasn't much to be done to reign Addie in. Protecting those around her was innate.

As was it for Quinn. So, when Caoihme kicked her daughter to the ground and then turned around and started talking to her as if nothing had happened, Quinn's calm smile turned into something a bit more vicious, her sharply pointed incisor's glinting. "I think the child will be fine," she spoke slowly, biting off every word, "but if you ever kick my daughter again, for something less that a deserved reason, you will not be." Her rust colored ears turned briefly back and her tail quivered, a low growl rumbling in the back of the fox-lady's throat. It was just the barest of moments, but enough to re-enforce her statement.

Feeling that her point had been delivered, she smoothed her features and smiled once more. "Now dear, tell me what these slips of paper are all about."

Gristla stared right at Addie with vaguely interested lilac eyes. Resting her great head on her paws, she swallowed once and then went about the awkward process of speaking in the tongue commonly used on Gaia. "I'm not a kitty. I am Caoimhe's keeper." Caoi snorted, and Gristla shot her a look. "But I am nice." Enilef can't smile and so Gristla just stared back at Addie for a moment.

Standing behind them, Caoi smirked. And then Quinn yelled at her. After having an internal moment of OMG YOU'RE NOT THE BOSS OF ME!!!, Caoimhe calmed down and stared blankly at the fox-lady. "Accident," she said with a shrug and paced to the other side of Gristla. She dropped to her knees and draped herself over Gristla. "Small fry, stop messing with Gristla. She'll eat you!" This seemed absolutely hilarious to Caoi and so she laughed, deep and throaty.

Gristla was not so amused. "I will not," she said, as if Caoi had accused her of eating s**t. The large tigress looked back at Addie. "I will not." Her eyes flickered up to Quinn. "Hello, Quinn," she said at last, acknowledging the other guardian. They had met briefly at Caoimhe's birthday party before everything went... weird. No hard feelings? Then, to Caoi, she added, "I believe Quinn asked you a question, cub." Gristla rolled her shoulder, nudging Caoimhe to get off of her.

For once, Caoimhe listened, popping back up to her full height (which was still under five feet). "Right. Papers." Scratching at the side of her arm, the girl sighed. How to say it? Hm... Caoimhe didn't really understand the meaning of "couth" or "candor" or anything delicate. "Well, I mean, we're still trying to figure it out. See, I talked to Dustin and Sei -- who are Fa'e, they came to my party -- and they tell me that there is, like, this bad guy. Named Chaos. And he is here to kill all the Fa'e -- like me and Addie. Most of our guardians got attacked by it. And I found Gristla being attacked, and I saved her. But she's blind. And we aren't... connected anymore. And--" Caoimhe's cheeks were flushed. Speaking of Gristla's condition made her sad. She hated being sad.

Gristla raised her chin, her charade of faking eyesight sold out. "You're rambling, cub. The papers. Tell her about the papers," she said, making a noise of comfort.

Caoimhe took a breath and thought for a moment. Then she said, "After the bad night, a bunch of Fa'e woke up with little papers in their hands. I did. The boys did. They had talked to a ton of other Fa'e who had too. We're trying to figure out what they all mean, but... it's hard. If all the Fa'e have them, then we have to find all the Fa'e, which is way harder than it sounds." She pointed a finger at the paper that Quinn held. "It's all riddles, weird riddles. We tried to Google them, but we only found out a few of them. No clue what it means, but it involves all of us." Her words dripped to a stop, and Caoimhe shrugged again. She hated feeling pressure to think things out. Couldn't someone just hand her a hatchet and point at the thing they wanted her to kill?
