The whole damn world must have gone topsy turvy.

A girl had given Zachary her number before school started. Another girl had saved Zachary's a** from some giant monster in the park, and in a miniskirt, no less. Little Evie, who was always so talkative, hadn't sent him a letter in weeks, while he'd sent no less than three. Calm, collected Zachary Esther had lost it on some kid in the library a while back, and while he hadn't seen the gamer since, he couldn't help but feel bad about the whole situation. On top of it all, Zachary's new lacrosse stick was green, and somewhat to his surprise, it didn't seem to bother him in the slightest compared to everything else.

He needed some normalcy in his life, and he needed it not to be sugar-coated with video-game style sparkly heroes and monsters and s**t. And he thought back to that one day at the mall, with the two brothers that he'd promised that he'd teach how to play lacrosse. The one, Elzo, he seemed like he was too much of a headache for Zachary to handle given his present state of mind. But the other one, the one with the ponytail, he'd been complacent enough. Zachary admittedly couldn't remember the guy's name, and had to ask around to find the identity of the other Xanis brother (no, dude, I know Elzo, what's the name of his brother?) which took more social poise than Zachary thought he was capable of. But he supposed that the nice thing about living at a military institution such as Hillworth was that there was no privacy, and room rosters weren't all that hard to get a hold of.

He hoped he wasn't being creepy. He hoped that guys didn't have the same squeamish nature about having unexpected visitors that the fairer sex had. But most importantly, he hoped he could find some way to burn off some steam, and maybe get some conditioning in. Or something. Zachary stared at the door of Marlo Xanis for a few minutes, hesitant as to if he should actuall knock on the door. Shuffling his extra stick from one hand to another, he tentatively gave the old wooden door a few raps, looking from side to side as if he half-expected an alarm to go blaring off.

He didn't even know what he was doing anymore. Maybe, at the base of it all, he just needed a friend to talk to. Maybe this Marlo kid was someone he could actually reach out to.

Bored out of his mind, Marlo Xanis was. In fact, he was quite sure if he continued down this path of boredom, his brain cells would no longer function. After all, tetris only kept your interest for so long before you got upset and threw it at a wall. Which almost did. He had his hand raise and ready for optimal throwing rage, when he was jostled back to reality by a knock on the door.

Who the the hell knocked at Hillworth?

Grumbling, he set aside the gaming device, (thus, saving it from becoming one with the walls of the Hillworth dormitory for all of eternity), and grudgingly opened the door. Marlo half expected it to the the matron, telling him to report for more detention, the other half expected it was Elzo telling him to look out for detention. So, when Marlo opened the door to see a face he'd not seen in a while, he was slightly shocked.

"..Zachary, Right?" He opened the door fully as if to invite him in. However, Marlo made himself comfortable leaning on the edges of the door frame. "What brings you around here? Aren't you on a different floor?"

Marlo seemed to recognize him fairly easily enough, which made Zachary feel somewhat bad for having to search around for the boy's name earlier that day. He didn't let this register on his face, however, looking down to the two lacrosse sticks in his hand with a nonchalant glance. "Yeah, I'm a few floors up," he admitted with a nod, the notion that he was really going out of his way dawning on him. Great, now he felt even more like a creep.

"I was just bored, y'know," added the boy, who was awkwardly trying to pull this all off as if it'd been a spur of the moment thing, "And I remembered you and your brother wanted to learn how to play lacrosse. Couldn't find your brother, but I figured I'd go ahead and ask if you were game?" Okay, so he hadn't looked that hard for Elzo (he had been somewhat avoiding the more rowdy brother), but it was still technically true that he hadn't been found.

There was an awkward pause as Zachary tried to think of something else to say, but given his creative block, the best he could do was hold out one of the lacrosse sticks, all taped up with Hillworth green, for Marlo to take. "I mean, you don't have to if you don't want to, or if you've got something better to do, I just figured it'd be kinda fun." Fun. Yeah. That was convincing.

Raising an eyebrow, Marlo just watched Zachary's movements, it was clear he was also bored, and wanted something to do. Holidays. They tended to make the other days seem droll and generally boring to the highest levels. "I know the feeling. I've basically been cooped up here for the past few days. So trust me." Gingerly, he grabbed one of the two sticks, testing it's weight in his hand. "I'm really up for anything at this point. But, lacrosse sounds alot better then some book reading club."

Moving into his room, he left the stick leaning on wall as he rummaged in the closet for a jacket. What he pulled out could only be described as the world's most overly fluffy winter coat to exist for a teenager. It was ungodly bulky, and lined with faux fur of all things. It was reminiscent of what a mom might have bought her son.
If that son was 5 and might freeze to death at a moment's notice.

Pulling it out, Marlo looked at Zachary's lack of 'hardcore' winter clothing. Then, Marlo put his overly bundled jacket back into the closet, opting for a much thinner, nicer, and moderately more sane Hillworth regulation over coat.

"So, uh...where are we going?" For all Marlo knew, you played lacrosse in a baseball field, and it may or may not involve 'pig skins'.

Zachary almost said something about the heavy overcoat, but he at least nodded in approval at the lighter uniform wear, since it hadn't been all that cold out to begin with. "We're just going to the common green, not Alaska," said the boy, the slightest hint of a grin on his face. Lightly, he motioned to the hallway before beginning to walk down it, turning to make sure Marlo was following him.

"It's actually pretty easy," Zachary explained, picking the rubber ball from the enclosed net and tossing it up for show. "You've got the ball," he held up the ball, "And you use the net to carry it. That's called cradling." To show what he was talking about, he placed the ball back into the net, then rocked the net back and forth with a rolling motion. "You cradle the ball down to the goal, and from there, you toss it in the goal, and you score. Kinda like soccer. Or Quidditch, I guess." He added the last statement with a somewhat darker tone, shaking his head, then pulled open the door to the stairs, allowing Marlo to go first.

"It'll be easier to explain once we're down there."

"Oh" and "I see." Was muttered by the younger Xanis brother as Zachary explained. At one point, he almost ran into a wall, he was so focused on watching the ball. At the mention of it being like 'quidditch' he sighed. That wasn't what he thought but, Elzo's words still rang a bell even now.
Smiling, Marlo did go outside first, before skittering quickly back inside. "..." He glared angry at the outside world, as if it had suddenly risen up and slapped him. "..It's cold." He muttered to himself. Looking at Zachary he said it again, almost as if accusing the other boy for the lack of outdoor warmth. "It is cold." He took breath and huffed, twirling the stick in his hands. "Can we not play this indoors?"

Marlo, secretly a wuss when it came to cold.

Zachary Esther was not a wuss about anything. Anything at all, except maybe girls, and he wasn't about to admit anything like that to the general public. Besides, it seemed that every Hillworth boy was at least slightly girl-crazy, so Zachary imagined that it was a freebie of sorts. So when he saw Marlo shy away from what really seemed to him as a crisp day in autumn (it wasn't even snowing!), Zachary simply had to turn and stare.

"...I guess we could go in the gym. You think it'll be unlocked?" He supposed that the better question would be to ask 'Do you think it'll be heated?', but the simple task of walking halfway across campus would be enough to satisfy his boredom for a few minutes so he decided not to say anything.

"Unless you want to go put on the parka you had earlier, or can think of someplace inside where we won't take out any windows." In theory, the tossing of a lacrosse ball could be done in a hallway, but that was never any fun. He shrugged, putting the decision up to Marlo. Once he was out of his room, he didn't really care what they did.

At the look from Zachary, Marlo glared. It was cold. How did he not get that? It was below warm, it wasn't even semi-warm. It was cold. Weighing his options, and how Zach suggested the gym made some things clear to Marlo.
One, this game was probably one commonly played outdoors.
Two, it was probably a game that you played in a field, as windows were very breakable, (you'd think in a school of rabble they'd invest in more sturdier things, like plexiglass).
Three, Gym was Killingworth territory.

He could do with out anything Killingworth related. He got enough of the gym teacher's dickery during the detentions, let alone gym. "Outside is fine." Pulling a scarf from his pocket, (Oh god it was wool and how had he fit it into his pocket was a mystery), Marlo wound it around his neck and snuggled into it. "We will play outside...even if it is cold." He motioned for Zachary to lead the way, fishing out a pair of mittens as well.

How Marlo fit all of the mittens and scarf into his pockets was a mystery. Why he had them already in his pockets...well, some mysteries never get solved.

"You sure?" Zachary gave the boy a look that suggested that he didn't think Marlo could handle the great wintry outdoors of Destiny City, but with a shrug he began to move outside, the chill of the air nipping at his face but otherwise not fazing him much. The campus green was an open, expansive place to be, and as Zachary began to walk out onto the grass, he noted that some of the others stuck at Hillworth for the Holidays were playing frisbee on the opposite corner. Meh. Lacrosse was manlier than frisbee: you didn't have to put the word 'ultimate' in front of it to sound cool. But ultimate lacrosse...that would probably be a little too hardcore, even for Zachary.

Jogging out to a position about ten feet away from Marlo, he began to cradle the ball back and forth, looking up to the other boy. "You ready? I'm just gonna throw it: no pressure. It'll give you a chance to get a feel for the ball and everything."
PostPosted: Mon Dec 14, 2009 6:33 pm

"Don't worry I'm-" Marlo's breath sucked in as the full force of the chill hit him. "...Fine." a tiny cloud of mist formed in front of his face. It honestly was cold, and yet Marlo thought it was freezing. He just had a low tolerance is all. Making sure he was thoroughly bundled up, (and boy was he ever), Marlo held his lacrosse stick ready in the air.

Upside down.

It was clear now more then ever:
Marlo had no real experience in sports aside from Track.

Zachary just had to stare. Upside down? Really?

"You hold it with the net up," he explained slowly, as if he was speaking to a child. "So you can catch the ball with it." As a little demonstration, he tossed the lacrosse ball up with a flick of his wrist, watching it with a careful gaze as it dropped before scooping it with his net, which was very much right side up as he did so.

"I mean, you've seen a lacrosse game before, right?" Zachary was pretty sure that witnessing a lacrosse game, even if you were only walking by the practice field one day, was a pre-requisite to living. Even people who never left their home at least saw it on TV, right? Like the lacrosse channel or something? Zachary realized two things simultaneously: one, that it was admittedly colder than he'd first thought, and two, there was the chance that this poor kid really didn't know a thing about lacrosse.

This was gonna be a long game.
PostPosted: Mon Dec 14, 2009 10:44 pm

"Oh. I was wondering about that." It was hard to tell if Marlo was blushing or not. His face was red from earlier cold embarrassment after all. "....I have never played anything aside from football and track. I...don't get out much." he shrugged, burring his face in the wolly scarf. Marlo really didn't get out much. Sure, he played some sports, but, he was more one to stay indoors like a recluse.

A recluse that didn't even know a lacrosse channel existed. "Just...explain the basics, or as we go. Sorry, but really, I haven't even watched a game." Marlo held out his stick and net as if to say, 'hand me the ball, and I will will do something with it'.

Zachary couldn't help it, so he simply stared at Marlo. Never even watched a game? Once? This made things more difficult.

"Alright...so you've got the sticks," said the boy, who motioned to the one in his hands, "And you use it to get the ball up and down a field. Sorta like soccer. And you've got a field, and you throw the ball in the goal, and that's a point. Pretty much like soccer." Awkward pause. "...Yeah."

"I mean, that's not the prettiest explanation in the world, but that's the basics," Zachary said, rubbing the back of his head. "Here. I'm going to throw the ball at you, and you try and catch it with the net part. Nice and easy. No pressure." With that, he shoved upwards with the lacrosse stick, sending the ball into a slow, high arc towards the other boy. It should have been an easy catch.

But then again, Marlo had never played lacrosse before.
PostPosted: Sun Dec 20, 2009 9:58 pm

Reaching out with the net, Marlo, (somehow) managed to catch the ball. From how he struggled with keeping it from dropping, it was obviously a lucky catch. "Soccer? You mean football?" He'd played football, he know how that worked, (he also was adamant it was football, not soccer).
"I've played football, but, if it's anything like.." He made an attempt at chucking the ball in the air and catching it. He managed it. "I could play."

He tossed the ball back at Zachary. It wasn't a bad toss, if a bit low.

Zachary stepped forward, catching the ball with a swoosh of his net and a soft smile of approval on his face. "Yeah, I guess it's like football, too, except you don't have downs, you just keep it in play until someone intercepts. Good toss, by the way. You really could play, if you wanted to learn." With a nod, he sent the ball flying back in Marlo's direction, still slow, high, and relatively easy to catch.

It seemed like now would have been as good a time as any to get a few things off his chest, now that Marlo seemed to have gotten the swing of things. And yet, Zachary hesitated, the potential awkwardness enough to make him not want to ruin the moment. So, for now, he kept to himself, watching the ball fall towards the younger Xanis brother with mild interest.
