((ok, this is placed in the past, before Shazi arrives at Rias Weyr. This is just setting up the events that sent her to the Weyr, followed by her searching.))

Inheritance, such a trivial thing, yet it is causes such debate! The young woman though cryptically, eyeing the two older men standing in front of her. Both were clearly rural holders, probably neighbors, and from the few words she managed to overhear, they were discussing the possibility of marrying their two oldest children. And, by the looks of it, the taller one was far more inclined to keep his hold to himself.

Sighing, she ignored them once more, her pale honey brown eyes scanning the rest of the Gather crowd. Every once in awhile she spotted a dragonrider or two, milling amongst the common folk. Inwardly her heart beat a little faster as she held her breath and looked around for dragons, though outwardly she appeared to only spare the sky and cliff ridge a passing glance. Seeing not even a shadow of a passing wing, her gaze turned earthward again as the line for bubbly pies moved forward.

The hours passed by numberless in the exchange of coin and laughter as the small Gather marched on. Effected by the good cheer, Shazi found that she was enjoying herself more in those hours then ever before. The dance floor soon became her haven, as the Harpers tuned up and started to play a lively jig. At first she went solo, but then was accompanied by a harper with his violin. He was a handsome young man with glittering sky blue eyes, laughing she swirled around him, her long skirts an amber wave of lush fabric as her body danced in tune with his music. Around them, other dancers flowed, the rich hues of their gather best forming a jeweled sea of liveliness.

Finally the Harpers called a break, set down their instruments with choreographed flourish, and bowed. Clapping with everyone else, Shazi turned to find a place to rest her feet, only to find the young violinist next to her. Startled ,she drew back a step, then hastened to reassure him when he looked downcast. "M'lord Harper! That was a beautiful piece!" she said cheerfully, regaining her composure and moved near him again. "And my sincerest congratulations on the applause." she added with a wry grin. At that, the harper smiled ruefully, and she was correct to assume he knew of the recent trouble at one of the smaller holds. There a young journeyman harper had been scorned for not playing their favorite piece before he had left. As a result, the smallholder had sent a notice of discontent to the Harperhall, but the incident had been dramatically inflated and thrown out of all proportion. Since then, the local Harpers were careful to investigate the tastes of the places they visited, which led to some small tension. "Indeed my lady, the applause was most welcome, though.." he paused and his smile broadened. "Not as welcome as you would be, if you cared to join me for dinner this evening.тва His forwardness surprised her, but after a quick mental check of her time schedule, Shazi agreed to meet him at his table for the gather feast.

The rest of the afternoon passed by lazily as the revelers slowly migrated towards the great courtyard where dozens of long tables had been set up to accommodate them. Shazi was among the gently drifting crowds as she and the young harper enjoyed the sights and sounds of the Gather.

"Palan? May I ask you something?" she asked suddenly, drawing her attention away from a brave youngster juggling sticks of fire in the air. Still entranced, the violinist took a few seconds to finally turn and look at her questioningly, though he still smiled. "Go for it, I love questions." he responded, grinning. Unable to resist the urge to grin back, Shazi smiled, hooking her arm through his. "Do you like being a harper?" Her question, along with the increased physical contact, flustered the harper and he mumbled something she did not hear. Frowning, she nudged him gently. "Hey, it's alright if you don't want to answer..." she said, trailing off. He wasn't lookng at her, but she could feel him sigh. "No no, it's quite alright. I should be used to questions like that and not react like a frightened colt." he said, looking down at her. "And as for the answer, I do enjoy being a harper and bringing smiles and dancing to hundreds, but let us say it was ot my first choice for my lifetime occupation."
