"SUE-BABY! Where are you?" Baby, in the sense of a cute boy, not in the sense of a kid... although it could easily have been the latter. Amaravati was being nice about that for now, though. ... Besides, he was only three years younger than her. It could've been worse, he could've been $#@&#xin;g twelve. ... Yeesh. Bad #*@$ing thoughts, there. Cupping one hand around her mouth, she called his name again.

... And again.

And again.

Hmmn. Where was Sue? This was his school. She was fairly sure that this was his school, considering that she had $*#@ing driven him here awhile ago. But where the $#%^ was he? How hard could one tall young man with a purple bun be to find? It wasn't as though they grew on $%$@ing trees... was it? Or maybe Barren Pines had a particularly large concentration of bunned men.

... Heh heh. Bunned. Bad thought. No, she was here for a god$*@$ reason, and it was not to make innuendo. With a sigh, she tapped her foot, taking a moment to admire the dainty, strappy sandal that graced it. It looked especially snazzy with the copper toenail polish, with the tiny lions on each big toe. Fabulous, that...

But a certain tiny mewing caught her attention. "Awww, poor baby. I know, it's $%$@ing hard to wait, but I promise you, you will love him." Mew. She'd fed the little beastie just half an hour ago (twenty minutes ago?), so she was sure that it was just fine. Maybe it didn't like the carrier. Maybe it wanted to play. ... What did she $%*#ing know, anyway?

"Mew!"

You know, some things, Sue was not used to. Some things he was not used to because he could never get used to them - like people who didn't appreciate cats. Other things he was not used to because he refused to get used to them - like people making fun of his name. But every now and again, he found something he wasn't used to because he'd never encountered it before.

An older chick from another school calling for him outside the dorms? That was definitely a part of that last category.

Amara might have gotten a glimpse of him, up in his room on the floor above the dining hall. He wasn't there very long, though. Less than twenty seconds after he'd heard her calling, Sue Gottschalk was thundering down the stairs and jogging out the doors, getting into the clear air outside where he could see for sure that no, it had not been a trick of his eyes: Amaravati was actually visiting him at his school.

"Cripes - what the hell are you doing here?!" Sue exclaimed, his voice neither happy nor cross, but merely puzzled. His attention in Amara quickly faded, however, as he caught the sounds of a kitten mewing -- and it was saying --

"... Uh. It's about to throw up," he informed Amara.

"Hmmn. I guess its meal didn't agree with it," Amara said, frowning as she opened the cat carrier. "Here, now, you... stop that. Throw up outside of the carrier." And there it went, throwing up-- and missing her sandal by inches. Oh thank god. She would've had to punch someone if it had thrown up on her shoe. Not the kitten, of course. They never had to find out who, though. "I'm here because my neighbor's cat #*$í this tomcat, and now there's... well, there's a lot of kittens. I thought maybe you'd like one of them? If I was wrong, I can put this little guy back in the carrier..."

"Here." Amaravati simply handed the kitten over, placing it gently into Sue's hands. "Do you know how to, uhh, fix it? Or does it just have an upset tummy?" Poor kitten. It continued to mew, though it seemed oddly to Amara as though it had attached itself to him, and was mewling for him, like he was some kind of mama cat. "You mentioned how you liked cats when we were eating, and I thought you could maybe help me with this one. ... Keep it, y'know. All of that." $*#%. She did not like sappy, drawn out conversations.

"And besides, you need to come with me to get Prom gear, because you haven't said a $@%#ing thing about your date, and you can't just... go as you are. Prom waits for no man, Sue." Not even a man with a girly $#$ name like his. "Is it still throwing up?" No. It was not throwing up. Hmmn. Maybe it had gotten whatever was bugging it out of its system. Poor little cat. She hoped handing it off like that wouldn't upset it, but in the end, the only real animal she knew how to take care of was her horse.

Kittens were a far different thing than horses.

"It ate too much before getting in the car," Sue told her absently - though it was odd, more like he was telling her what the kitten was saying than interpreting the events on his own. "It'll probably go once or twice more before its stomach is empty - don't worry, it's not that bad--"

And there it went. Another pile on the ground, less chunky than the first. The kitten seemed much perkier now, though!

"Atta girl," Sue cooed to the little feline, obviously unbothered by the piles of disgusting it (she?) had left behind. When she came near enough to him, Sue lifted her up with one hand, tucking her under his arm and stroking her chin. "They don't let us keep pets here, though. Believe me, I've tried...."

Not so far away, there was a disconcerted mewl. As could be expected, anytime that Sue was outside, cats were bound to turn up - and it was Mackie who was the first to appear. With a pissy look on his face, the tomcat trotted clear up to Sue, his gaze fixated unhappily on the kitten in Sue's hands. He mewled again, angry and whiny. He wasn't about to get upstaged by some new brat, was he?

"Give it up, Mackie, she's just visiting," Sue scowled at the tomcat. He flicked his tail, but seemed otherwise satisfied by this explanation.

"Now, you were talking about... Prom?" Sue questioned Amara, while the kitten purred and clawed her way up his cardigan onto his shoulders. "What Prom are we talking about?"

"... What Prom are we talking about!? Why, the only Prom that matters, of course! At Crystal," she said with a wave of her hand, as if that explained everything. "You have a date, right?" Surely he had a date. Was there any possible way that Sue did not have a date? ... Was he playing with her? If so, she was going to have to disapprove. She was going to have to disapprove mightily.

"What do you mean, she's just visiting? Maybe you can't keep a cat here, but I can keep it at my place, and you can visit. ... She?" It was a lady cat? Aww, a tiny little girl! How sweet! Okay, Amaravati was going to gag on the sweetness any time now. "Sue, you have got a $%#@ing lot of cats," she said, eying what looked to be a growing crowd. Or maybe those were cats that had just turned up.

Maybe they weren't his. ... But she'd seen him with several cats before, when she'd dropped him off. Hmmn. "You're going, right?" He had to be going. If he didn't go, Amara would wind up with no friends attending Prom, and that was just unforgivable. Or possibly a sign that she needed to stop $#$&#xin;g swearing so god@%#@ much, and try making friends on a more than casual level.

Pshaw, that kind of thing took effort. Besides, it was so much more fun to bring Sue unexpected gifts. ... Even if the gifts in question happened to be making little messes on the ground. That was slightly disconcerting. Obviously, she had a lot to learn about cats. Tiny, mewling cats that cuddled up in Sue's hand-- and oh my god, that was the $*#@ing cutest thing ever. $%@#.
PostPosted: Sun Nov 22, 2009 7:56 pm

Oh. At Crystal. Hiding his face against the kitten (who was nearly doing flips, so eager was she in rubbing the side of Sue's head), Sue grimaced. That did explain everything....

"Hadn't heard 'bout it." His voice was somewhat muffled at that moment, as the kitten had noticed his face and begun throwing herself against it with renewed vigor. Sue plucked her off his shoulders then, holding her against his chest. "Truth to tell, I don't know a lot of Crystal girls, so...."

So yes, he was trying to imply. He didn't have a date. He couldn't imagine why he should have a date. And honestly, he was probably happier that way - as long as his mother didn't find out and force him to get a date.

Bartholomew was there now, as well as Stripers. Nibs was hiding off in the bushes somewhere, as was her way - she wouldn't be coming out to investigate, not with a person so close by. "They're not really my cats," Sue was saying, waggling a finger for the kitten to bat at. "I just look after them. They like me; I listen."

"... You're telling me that with an entire school full of girls, you couldn't get a date? Really? Are you serious? ... Sue, do not make me ask you myself." Coming from Amara, that sounded more like a threat than an offer, but Sue was free to take it as he wished. "You should get a date right now!" Of all the ridiculous--! "Before they run out of girls. C'mon. It is not hard. It goes like this: I would like you to go to the Prom with me. There, not hard, right?"

Rolling her eyes, Amaravati put her hand on her hips. "Honestly, you'd think you'd never been on a date before, with the way you shy away from girls. #%$%. Is it that hard to find someone? I would think it would be easy." There were, after all, plenty of girls at Barren Pines, and plenty more at Crystal, and Meadowview. ... Obviously, she had a personal opinion about which girls were superior, but that was neither here nor there.

"They aren't? They look like they're your cats, hanging about you like that." Oh $*#&#xin;g bloody %*#$, that was adorable. $%#% him. $#%# him for being so cute with the kitten. She frowned, and switched the carrier to her other hand, flicking her long hair off of her shoulder. "Well, that can change. I can introduce you to plenty of Crystal girls." Not that he would want that, but whatever. She was determined to get him a Prom date.

Oh geez. This conversation was going to go no place good, and fast. Either Sue admitted that he wasn't interested in the dance and hadn't even thought about asking somebody to it - in which case, he was setting himself up for a whole line of hard questioning about his sexuality - or he surrendered and let Amara fix him up with somebody.

Which.

Well.

He didn't know.

"What," he asked thoughtlessly, "you know a pretty girl that needs a date or something?"

No, of course she didn't know any pretty girls who needed a date-- wait a minute. Wait just a $@#&#xin;g minute. She was pretty sure that his comment could be taken as a direct insult. Glaring fiercely, Amara set the carrier down, and put her hands on her hips. "And what do I look like to you, chopped liver?" Oh, she was about ready to flounce. Sure, she hadn't meant anything serious by her comment about the dance, but after this? She was insulted. She was definitely, and unavoidably insulted.

He'd take anything she gave him without complaint (or little complaint, at least), but when it came to the way he treated her in return, well... he was abysmal. Absolutely abysmal. "I know plenty of pretty girls," she said scathingly, with another irritable toss of her hair. "But see if I set you up with any of them now." Harrumph. He was impossible! And oblivious. Now that he'd basically turned her down flat (of all the $*@&#xin;g nerve!), she was too incensed to even think of what girl would consider him for a date.

Oooohhh she ought to smack him!

And now that Sue was standing in the hole with the shovel in his hand, there was only one thing left to do.

"Wait wait, hold on! What're you getting so upset about? I thought you were just kidding about that asking me stuff! I mean, c'mon - you weren't serious, were you?" Sue protested. After all, why would he expect a Crystal girl to be asking him?

But obviously she had been serious - or at least had wanted him to think she'd been serious - or she wouldn't be so upset. Time to backpedal, and quick!

"I mean, you must have a date already," he tried to pacify her. "Girl like you must have lotsa guys lining up to date ya! So I wasn't tryin' to be mean or anything, you see?"

Not this time, at least.

"I most certainly do not have a date," Amaravati huffed, looking entirely put out with Sue. "I was going to go by myself, because I don't know any boys." Any other boys, that is. "Except this teacher, and I'm thinking that's maybe a little too $%#@ed up even by my standards." But she was definitely going, alone or not. "Crystal is a girl's school, duh. I guess I could've taken a chick, but I think my father would have flipped his $*@& if I had." Seriously. With parents as traditional as Amara's, it was not like she could go to the Prom with a girl.

Still, she preened when he said that bit about how she must have lots of guys lining up to date her. He was right, of course. She ought to have. Obviously, reality didn't exactly match with fantasy, there. A faint trace of a pout lingered at her lips, though. Honestly, it wasn't like she was his mom, or something. What, was she his last #@%*ing choice? "I don't know why I bother with you. You have no manners to speak of... but at least the kitten likes you." The kitten liked Sue a lot. The kitten was, in point of fact, purring and licking his fingers.
PostPosted: Sun Nov 22, 2009 9:19 pm

"Well, yeah. Cats tend to like me," Sue answered, clearly not taking it as much of a compliment. "Like I said. I listen."

Of course, then came the chorus of meows to dispute this - that wasn't all! The cats liked him for more than just that! But since Amara could not understand what they were saying, and Sue saw no need to translate, he let the statement stand.

"Look... I'm slow, but I'm not stupid. You want a date, right?" Brutally blunt as that statement might have been, Sue figured that at least it would stop this awkward, dangerous tapdance he seemed to have been caught up in. "That's why you're here? I'll tell you flat-out, you can get a hell of a lot of a better date than me. But if you're trying to say you want me to ask you...." Because, you know. He was totally the one who had to ask her. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. "Then okay. Amara. Will you go to the prom with me."

Hey, that hadn't been why she'd come here at all! "No, that's not why I'm here. I came here to give you the kitten." Obviously. What the #$%@ was he talking about? She made a face. "See, she likes you already. So you're stuck with the kitten, and you're stuck with me as your Prom date." One could almost hear the 'OH HOHOHO!' in the background. ... Ominous. "You're going to have to go with me to pick out a suit, then," Amaravati decided. "Just the style. They probably already know your sizes by now."

There, shove the blame off on someone else. It wasn't that she had memorized his sizes or anything. ... Nope, of course not. Let him think it was the salespeople. It was not as though he would know better. What the $*#@ was he on about, anyway? "Pffff, I can get a $#$ of a lot of a better date than you, sure. But maybe I don't want to go looking. Maybe I'd rather go with someone I know at least a little. Ever think of that?"

Obviously not. "I didn't call you stupid, stupid. ... Err. Sue." Amara rolled her eyes again, and huffed a little. As if everything she ever did was to get a date. "I already know what I'm wearing, so you're all that's left, shopping-wise." Although with that attitude, he could go #$%# himself. "Really, I should just pick a suit out for you, and let you deal with it... but here's me, thinking you might like to have a say in things."
PostPosted: Mon Nov 23, 2009 10:43 pm

Just came here to give him the kitten? Yeah, right. Sue knew a bribe when he saw one. Unfortunately... it wasn't a very good bribe, all things considered.

"I can't keep her, though," Sue informed Amara flatly. The kitten, who had been so invested in grooming his hand, looked suddenly stricken. "They don't let us keep pets at school."

The tomcat by his feet grumped in satisfaction, as though to say damn straight. The kitten, meanwhile, began whining pitifully.

When it came to the subject of prom, though... well, Sue wasn't that interested in the first place, so the kitten was all that he wanted to focus on. If anything, this could be taken as evidence that Amara was wrong - he didn't care enough to have say, he'd just follow along and do whatever she wanted.

Hopefully.
