"Careful there!! Mind the paint!! If that filigree gets dinged or damaged in anyway, I'll have your guts for garters!"
The longshoremen on the quay seemed to know what they were about, but the shouted, yet pleading orders of the Admiral knew no bounds. They rolled their eyes as he brought the ship down and had ran the lead line run through the cleats fore and aft of the 'Aurora~Borealis'. The massive ship settled into it's berth rather snugly, but free of damage.
Letting out a sigh of relief, Admiral Cochrane relieved the helmsman from his duties, which at this point was practically standing about while the Admiral went about his customary practice of landing the ship himself. The old girl was his pride and joy, and no bad events - upon threat of death - would befall her. Going to the rail, Cochrane peered over the side and called out to the longshoremen to secure the gangplank, for his shore-party would be replenishing supplies immediately.
"Mr. Wortley! Report to me, if you please."
The sprightly young man with pimples all over his face that had been standing out of the crews way as they had come into dock now emerged from the shadows and sprinted up the quarter-steps. Saluting his senior officer - which was an honorary custom: the Admiral's rank being only that of self entitlement - he stood at attention.
"Mr. Wortley, I'll have you run the pressgang, if you please. Offer them the Company's shilling first.. out of courtesy. Though, if you haven't the numbers we need by dawn, then I give you my permission to seek out the drunk, debauched and hungry poor that may be fit enough for service aboard the 'Aurora'. Is that clear?"
"Yes, Sir. A-Aye-Aye, Sir..." Studdered the young man. He stood there as the Admiral shifted through the companion box, looking for his sextant, spyglass and the right charts. Cochrane could feel the boys uncomfortably nervous glance. Looking up, he smiled at the boy. "You're dismissed, son.."
Chuckling as Wortley scuttled away to find his chosen men, Cochrane grabbed the necessary tools and then plunged down below decks to his quarters so that he could ready the ship's course for when she'd next be departing for foreign skies. But first.. he thought, the men are paying off today. They'll want their pay. Not to mention, Mr. Wortley won't have what it takes to grab all the crew we'll need. Guess I'll run a roster myself..

Esme scurried up from the hold of the ship, nearly sick with anxiety. Would the Admiral be impressed? She bit her lip in thought, pacing the cargo hold. 'Should I show him my worth by giving him a pistol show? No, no, that'll never do. To be aboard such a great ship is an equally great privalege, and I must treat it as such!' Decided, Esmerelda stalked up the stairs with a swing in her step.
"Junior Officer du Lac, reporting for--Oooph!" She gasped out as she stumbled over her own boots, blushing vividly.

Gazing upon the flustered young woman with an entertained smirk, Cochrane stepped forward and took her hand, helping her up. "Stand tall on the quarterdeck, my dear... always. It keeps ones' reputation intact."
Turning, he paced back to the taffrail and gazed far below. Speaking to her over his shoulder, his years afloat told well by the loud volume, yet soft tones in which he spoke. "Welcome aboard, Miss....?"

She straightened her cap, brushing herself down. Lowering her eyes respectfully, she stood at his side.
"du Lac, Admiral. Esmerelda du Lac. I sailed upon the Galileo until recently. Needed a change, I suppose." She smiled wistfully as the wind twisted stray threads of hair around. She looked up at the Admiral, still smiling. "And I most humbly thank you for taking me aboard this vessel."

"Ah yes, Miss du Lac. I'd heard you'd come aboard this morning. Punctuality is key in all things. I'm glad to see that is a lesson you have already been schooled in, and therefore will not have to learn while aboard my ship."
Turning from the rail, he looked her up and down. Her uniform wasn't pressed or at all perfectly clean; definitely a work kit, looking that of a ranker, or rather an officer who had worked their way up through the ranks, rather than buying a commission from some young gentleman who wished not to go into service. Despite her somewhat rustic appearance, he deeply respected the ideal of an officer 'come up the hawse'. Though, he didn't know if this was the circumstance of her arrival in the least. May as well find out..
"Well, Miss du Lac, it appears we have an opening aboard my ship for a 2nd Lieutenant, but I fear that I know nothing of your credit and zeal. I need to know of your skills and of your specialties. Have you papers for me? A résume as you french would say, aye!? du Lac, is french, is it not?"

She blinked, then chuckled at his comment, nodding. "Yes sir, by what I've heard over the years, my father was most likely a Frenchman."
She rustled through her side pack, unearthing two wax-sealed parchments, and handed them to the Admiral.
"I do hope my credentials are to your liking, Admiral."

Taking the lot of papers from the young officer, he weighed them in his hand. Looking at the heavy black wax seals, he turned them over and reached inside his jacket; slipped the paperwork into his tail pockets.
Looking out over the massive, industrious landing platform, he watched as an albatross flew between the masts of so many airships. "I don't measure an officer by what I read on a few sheafs of parchment, Miss du Lac, but rather by how I see them carry out their duty. That being said, before I put you to work, I need to know what your specialty is, so that we can sign you onto the ships company roster. So, what is your history, du Lac?'

Esme excused herself for a moment as she picked up her pack by her feet and handing him a revolver, handle-first so as not to startle him by pointing a gun at him.
"I'm a marksman, Admiral, along with being a cook and...having a modest start as an amateur treasure seeker. I was brought up in an orphanage in Germany, and found my way into the academy when I was fourteen. My friend, you may know him as Captain Ambrose, taught me about sailing more than the academy ever did."
She looked out over the edge, gazing as the pelican dipped and eventually rested upon another ship's deck, much to the chagrin of those aboard.
"I sailed upon the Galileo for three years, and, as I've said, I wanted a change. I'm much like air currents, Admiral, I thrive on change and, as such, change constantly myself." She turned to face the Admiral once again. "Anything I missed, sir?"

"You missed the whole bloody part about your duties aboard the 'Galileo', Miss Du Lac, but have no fear. I've changed my mind about your becoming second lieutenant aboard the 'Aurora'." Turning, he descended down the quarterstep and into the waist of the main deck, expecting her to follow. Moving forward, he checked the starboard fore-halyards to make certain they were taught, properly coiled, and secured. He then turned to her as if there hadn't been any awkward pause in conversation.
"No, instead I've decided to place you in charge of my Marine Division. I need my marines trained in the ways of a sharpshooter. The damned Admiralty does not see fit to send me trained troops. Therefore, you'll be written into the roster as Acting Lieutenant of the 'Aurora Borealis' Royal Marines. You'll be issued a fresh uniform before we make sail. So, as things stand, you're men are yet to be brought aboard. If there is anyone you should like to name as junior officers, now is the time to name them so that I may inquire as to their availability and credentials."
