She was hurt.

How foolish she had been. She attacked a baby bear without even sensing the mother was near. She had killed both of them eventually, but her leg was scratched up and covered in her blood and the bear's blood. Her eyes watched as the two dead animals lay in front of her. What had she done? She was so.. hungry, and yet so unsuccessful. She was supposed to kill things without ever getting hurt. And once again, she had failed.

The only thing she could do was walk a few steps to a cool stream and dip her leg in with the hope that the bleeding would stop. She wanted so badly to eat. It had been weeks of starvation, only because she couldn't find the strength to hunt. This morning she had reached her breaking point and she obviously went a little overboard. Sometimes she wondered why she was so childish. She wished she paid better attention to her parents while growing up. She should have trained with her grandfather more often as well. What ifs weren't going to get her anywhere. She was what she was. A big silly mess of a monster.

She brought her leg out of the water and decided to just dig in to her feast. At first glance her leg looked to be cleaned and fixed, but then seconds later it started dripping of blood again. She would deal with it later... For now, the taste of meat was just perfect. She was lucky she didn't get more hurt, but now that she was eating she realized the sacrifice was worth it.

She wanted to be better at things, but truly had no idea how. Oh well.

Nothing drew in a hungry carnivore like the smell of fresh blood. Though he was no scavenger, curiosity was enough to have him shifting towards the source of the scent, a black shadow silently slipping through the trees. It was not corpses he'd expected to stumble across, nor the ravenous, but wounded mare who seemed fully set upon devouring them.

The dark stallion lingered where he was, knowing all too well what his kind was prone to doing if another attempted to interrupt them while feeding. Still, what was she? The wings and tail said Kalona, for sure, but she had no horns... no, instead, there were.... wings? Sanguine eyes narrowed thoughtfully, and he made no move to hide his presence, staying at what he considered to be a respectful distance.

"Was it the mother you took on, and slaughtered the cub after? Or is the opposite true?" He inquired gruffly, curious enough to linger and ask. If she attacked him, he'd defend himself, of course--and put her in her place, to boot. But he would not steal her meal, not when he had already fed well this morning.

He was trying to improve at this conversation thing.

It was no surprise that Mercy was completely distracted from the rest of the world. If she were a real hunter she would have picked up on the stallion's scent and even heard him approach her. Instead, she was busy eating. Typical.

She was finally jolted from her positioning when she heard the male speak, and with a large swivel of her body she faced the other Kalona with a bit of shock. Well dang. He was awfully intimidating. But she was never one to be frightened. She would admit that he had quite the stare to him. She did enjoy staring back in these situations.

"Ah well, no. The mother was an added surprise to my original hunt." She could only snort in disgust as she looked at the fallen creatures once again. "Whenever I try to start with a plan, things always seem to change. Does that ever happen to you?" He looked like a stallion that always had things under complete control. That must have been nice for him.

"Do you want some?" She felt sort of strange to not offer, and she glanced at him carefully and noticed his distinguished features. So dark and yet so shiny too. That was very cool to look at. "I wouldn't have this much if the mother wasn't so stupid. I suppose every creature does different things for the sake of pride or even love." She really didn't understand what creatures were thinking most of the time. Maybe she'd be a better hunter if she understood others better?

The jerk that gripped the strange mare was enough to earn a snort from the beast, one hoof toeing mindlessly at the ground as though he was mentally wondering why he was bothering with this. She seemed young somehow, inexperienced, and tilted an ear forward when there was no detectable hostility in her voice or her stance. Taken by surprise, mm?

"No." He said bluntly at her question, shifting his jaws a little as he forced himself to consider it a bit more closely. "...When I was younger, yes. Now it's easy enough to roll with unexpected change." Save for the most recent incident in his life, of course, but the big, dark stallion had no plans to reflect on that right now. He couldn't afford to lose his temper.

It was her offer that surprised him, eyes narrowing somewhat. "I've eaten. I wouldn't be so willing to share with just anyone, though. Plenty of scavengers that would just as likely try and steal from you, if they thought you were being weak." Harsh, but true. Wings rustled quietly at the next statement, and he found it seemed a bit more personal than it once would have. "Protecting the ones you care for should be the most important thing." Nemesis snorted, shaking his head a little. "...It's different, when someone close has been ripped away. It drives one to do crazy, stupid things."

Mercy only stared downwards at her fallen prey as the stallion spoke, and when he was finished she focused her glowing eyes on him carefully. This was the first real Kalona she'd ever met outside of her family. Had he accepted her for the moment and decided not to kill her? She really had little clue of how the politics of the land worked and why he had decided she was worthy enough to speak. The stallion seemed to be watching her as carefully as she was watching him. Were creatures just never supposed to trust each other? The world was truly a strange place to understand.

"I know it's usually unwise to offer to strangers." she then added while tilting her head to the side. "But I don't know. I couldn't tell if you were hungry, and you haven't attempted to steal it either." Hmm. Maybe she would need to get better at reading others? Even if he didn't want the food she felt more polite for asking. Her father would have wanted it that way at least.

"Do you have certain individuals that you care to protect?" He seemed quite knowledgeable on the subject so she didn't hesitate to ask. "I can't see you ever becoming stupid or crazy, though." he was much too stoic and well put together than that. She could imagine he was a tough fight to win against and could easily hold his ground against any creature. He was also much more experienced then she was. "What happens to be your name, stallion? I'm.. Mercy."
