"I wanna!"
"Okay, here." Sam wrapped a strong arm around Rhys' waist and lifted the spawn up to the desk, so he could see the papers his father was looking at. "What does that say?"
"Greed."
"Mmm hmm. And that?"
"Pat... eenkee!"
It had barely been a week since Rhys had decided that learning to read would be a good thing, and he still wasn't very good at it.
"Pay-shense," Sam corrected.
"Why?"
"I... don't know." Sam wasn't as good at explaining the intricacies of written language as his wife was, which was probably why he was now employed as a melee teacher rather than an english one. "It just is." Sam had originally thought to teach these facility children the magical arts and his classroom was laid out accordingly. There were more comfortable chairs and mats here than tackling dummies, but there was no shortage of whips, staffs, brass knuckles and wooden swords scattered around as well.
Rhys shrugged. "I dunno eithur."
Sam smiled. "Here," he said, handing the child a practice dagger and a scratched but serviceable GameBoy Advance. "Stay behind the screen and don't make too much noise, okay?"

Cody would have been dragged down the hallway, had Ary not been threatening to take him as a student into her class. He had seen the beautiful bruise blossom across her shoulder from her first class and the various fights she got into and was, well, not entirely willing to take that route either.
And so, here he was, trudging down the hallways with the usual scowl on his face. Blue-green eyes scanned each tech for any sort of object of worth that could possibly be stolen. Finding nothing of importance as he reached the classroom, the greed spawn opened the door and looked around curiously. "I believe I'm here for some sort of class?" he asked, sounding fairly irritable as questioned the man. There was some sort of presence on the other side of the curtain, and a young one at that.
Probably his kid. Psh, whatever, like he actually cared who else was around.

"Yes. Fighting," Sam said, trying to be subtle about looking the kid over. This Cody didn't look all that old, but he was obviously old enough to have perfected the attitude problem. "Do you have anything in particular you want to learn?" The formality surrounding fencing or dueling would probably be lost on this kid, but there was quite a bit of sneakiness and stealth that went hand-in-hand with close daggerwork and backstabbing. Kind of akin to picking pockets, coincidentally enough. Sam wasn't sure he was supposed to be encouraging the children's sins, but at least he could see Cody paying attention to that sort of lesson.

Cody shrugged and entered the classroom upon finding that he was, indeed, in the right classroom. Upon entering he was greeted with a new decision to ponder over. "Anything stealth related?" he finally asked, moving farther into the room and peering around.
Damn, once again there wasn't much that could hold any possible worth. Did everyone seem to know he was around and hide everything far out of sight? Well, if that was the case then they certainly knew how to piss him off.

Sam nodded, a slight smile touching his lips. This could be fun. "All right," he said softly. He cut across the room briskly and quickly, as if he had just had a grand idea, and opened a small chest that lay next to a rack containing a plastic rapier, a quarterstaff, and a pair of plush nunchucks. "Here," he said, removing a necklace that he quickly dropped into the pocket of his light jacket before it could do more than sparkle a bit. "And here." He laid out a pair of odd training daggers meant to be wielded with a punching motion, stepping back out of the way so Cody wouldn't somehow steal the necklace before it was time. The daggers had substantial handles but flimsy, decorative blades. "Pick one."

Cody saw the necklace as soon as he opened the chest of objects. Well, he didn't exactly see it, but he managed to see the aura as Sam grabbed it and slipped it into his pocket. It wasn't the strongest, like those in Ary's room, but it was definitely enough to make him figity and on edge. It was going to be his, no doubt about that. Slowly, his eyes slid from the pocket to the daggers presented to him. Which would be of more use to him?
Hm, blade or hook... "This one," he replied after a few moments, picking up the hooked dagger. It was strange, as if it wasn't a true blade but it was. Whatever, the hook would provide basically an extra couple of fingers to snag onto things and pull things away. If anything, it should provide enough of a distraction to reach into the pocket on Sam's jacket and pull out the necklace. "Now what?" he asked curiously, wondering what exactly his teacher would have in store for him next.

Sam nodded, taking the blade that had been left behind for himself and settling it in his right hand. He relaxed into a loose fighting stance, punching dagger held at an angle in front of his body. "I know you know what I'd like you to do, Cody," he said, his voice still low. "How would you go about doing it? How would you take something from someone who knows you're coming for it with one of these?" He raised the hand with the dagger a bit. "If you can get close enough to do that, you can get close enough to seriously injure someone, maybe even kill them. If you felt like being nice, perhaps you would just incapacitate them." He smiled a small smile. Sam wasn't the bloodthirsty sort, but playing with practice daggers was fun, and if these lessons helped these children realize that not everyone was looking out for their best interests, it was all the better. Being able to defend oneself did wonders for one's confidence, not that this spawn seemed to need it.
He waited for Cody's reply. His questions hadn't been rhetorical and he honestly wondered what the boy's answer would be.

"Stealing from those that are wary are easy enough, but I don't give up my secrets that easily," Cody replied, eyes narrowing a bit. The weapon made it difficult, like taking on Ary when she had just taken back something of his. all he needed was a bit of luck and to get in close...
Cody crouched a little, slipping the dagger onto his hand as he took a step to the side. He'd have to be quick and stealthy, not to mention careful of that blade Sam had. Without any sort of warning, the spawn darted to Sam's left side, away from the weapon and the necklace. As he got within arm's reach, the weapon on his hand hooked onto the jacket, pulling it back as if to pull it off.
Or provide enough of a distraction for his fingers to slip into the correct jacket pocket and snatch the necklace. He kept low, hoping to minimize the accuracy Sam would have if he, say, struck out.

The child certainly was a fast learner, or perhaps he just knew these things all along. Instinctively. As he had said, they were his 'secrets.' Greed certainly seemed to be a powerful motivator. Fortunately for Cody, Sam was quite strong but lacked in the speed and dexterity departments. Unfortunately for him, the man was preternaturally focused. As the boy's dagger nipped at his coat, pulling it halfway down his arm, Sam's opposite hand dropped to the pocket containing Cody's prize, keeping it shielded from prying fingers for the moment.
He recovered quickly, readjusting the jacket's sleeve back to its original position and falling back into a fighting stance. "That was... impressive. Once more."

Cody slipped back to where he had been previously, a slight scowl on his face. He had done everything perfectly; provide a distraction elsewhere and go after the prize. Ah, but just because one plan failed, didn't mean he had lost hope and didn't have another plan to try. Just needed to pause and think for a second.
Within moments, the spawn had yet another idea and was preparing for yet another attack. Slowly, he shifted into a sort of position that looked like he was going to tackle Sam, wings flat against his back. Then, without any sort of warning he rushed Sam, darting to the side at the last moment and grabbing at the coat, hoping to pull it off before Sam could react. He had noticed how slowly he moved in comparison to Ary and himself, and he couldn't move that fast anyways.
If this didn't work, he'd have to resort to violence. Oi, that sounded painful. More painful than when Ary tackled him and they fell down the stairs while pummeling him the entire time. The bruises had yet to fully heal...

In truth, Cody's first instinct had been the smarter of the two. Sam was used to people rushing him as a distraction tactic, as imposing as he usually appeared. The fact that this was a classroom situation, however, had previously put him at a slight advantage. He had been expecting to be attacked, after all. Sam decided to reward the boy for his former actions, and quickly. There was something in this child's eyes... something Sam wasn't in a mood to challenge.
At Cody's swift tug, Sam let his arm fall lax and the coat dropped off on one side, the necklace clattering out of his pocket onto the floor. In a false attempt to counter, Sam's weapon swung wide, glancing a bit closer to the boy's folded wings than he'd intended.

As soon as he heard the necklace tumble out of the pocket, Cody dropped the coat and dove for the object. Hell, he didn't get this far to just let it slip from his grasp yet again! The spawn flinched slightly as the blade from Sam's weapon slid lightly over his wing in some sort of counter attack. Thankfully, he managed to roll away with the necklace already held tightly to his chest.
Cody paused for a moment, watching the older man carefully. "You let me win... Why?" he asked, wishing Sam had given him a better challenge. At least Ary actually attempted to wound him for making such mistakes. Then again, if Ary hurt him Shadai would know it wasn't exactly anyone's fault, so to speak. He wasn't entirely sure if the same would be said for Sam...

Sam shrugged. "You had me last time, I just happened to get lucky. You're quick." If that was meant to be a compliment, the man certainly didn't dwell on it. "And you deserved your prize." The smile he gave the boy was brief but sincere. "I hope I didn't hurt you." A teacher of magic and spirituality at heart, Sam felt lessons were better learned with a minimum of bloodshed.

Cody frowned, knowing full well that just because his teacher had gotten lucky in countering his attack didn't mean he should get his prize. "Not that quick, though, and you didn't hurt me," he replied, glancing down at the necklace and fingering it gently. It was pretty and actually worth something, which was more than he could say about some things he found in stores nowadays.

"Not that quick, I suppose," Sam said, his own smile fading in the face of Cody's frown. "But quicker than me. That's why you have these lessons, anyway. Would you prefer I was harder on you?" Yes, it was important that these children learn to fight, but not at the expense of their happiness. "Or we could call it a day. You have your prize."
