It was after an argument with her mother that Tate practically ripped her laptop open; she abused the keyboard (taktaktakTAKTAKtak) as she signed into iChat and scanned the buddy list. Ah! There she was, there was Giselle, exactly the right person to talk to about this. Giselle Knew Things. A lot of things.
tkonstantin: GISELLE.
That would get the point across, that this was serious goddamn business. Tate never used caps, and never called Giselle by her first name. It was always Zell if she used a name at all.
While she waited for a response, she hopped on the Soul Calibur forums. Maybe there would be an upcoming tournament where she could pretend her mother's face was on the opponent's character. Where she could kick the s**t out of someone and it was completely socially acceptable. Where she could get paid to do what she loved, constantly. All the time, just game after game after game...
She eyed the sketchpad on her desk. There was no future there. Tate was not a creative person; she drew fanart, and never showed it to anyone. All she could do was play video games and hate people with every fiber of her being, but even that, well. Intent to kill does not a career make.

elbasucks4452: Tatiana.
Giselle barely glanced at the chatbox, which was unusual. As a Bestie, it was Giselle's solemn duty to listen to whatever Tate complained about and agree with her about how unfair it was wholeheartedly. However, she was researching, and for once it wasn't for a class. She had been frustrated, confused, furious at the inexplicable events going on in the school for about a week now, but Giselle was finally feeling something that she hadn't since that blood girl knocked at her window. It wasn't control, not quite, nor was it knowledge, because she was still in the dark. It was perhaps clarity. An icy, focused state of mind that left her exhilarated and driven.
Tara was dead.
Tara was dead, and that had been what she had needed to wake up, because Tara wouldn't die from just anything. She was Giselle's rival, infuriating, but equal in her scientific knowledge. A disease wouldn't have taken her out that quickly, especially since people were saying it was going around the school. Tara would have been on her guard. She would have done something.
So Giselle was researching bacterial meningitis to dispel the myth once and for all. It wasn't just Tara, students were dropping like flies, and Giselle wanted to do more than just tell Elke that she was being nonsensical, because at this point even she couldn't say that this was a string of coincidences and practical jokes. There was something not quite right about this. Tara had provided her with evidence before, but with the corpses piling up, blood samples were supremely useless. Something was killing students, possibly multiple somethings.
Giselle was determined to be prepared, and after Tara's death, she felt a mask and not sharing fluids was not going to help much.

That threw Tate for a loop, but she took a deep, calming breath and typed:
tkonstantin: college tkonstantin: what r u doin about it????? tkonstantin is typing...
This bit would take some work to properly explain to her bestie. How did she tell a clearly preoccupied Giselle that she was freaking out over college and didn't know what to do? Oh, she knew Zell would have millions on millions of applications already filled out. They were of the Age to be applying, after all, and Giselle never disappointed.
Tate did. She disappointed many people, variously and often, but... If she didn't go to the same college as her best friend, she thought maybe it'd be better not to go at all.
tkonstantin: r u busy

At the word 'college', Giselle's response was practically mechanical. She had been quizzed about it far more than once.
elbasucks4452: My first choice is Cambridge. elbasucks4452: Would apply to Oxford too, but you can only apply to one at a time, it's absurd. elbasucks4452: Also applying to Yale, Harvard, Hampshire College. elbasucks4452: For now, anyway.
She didn't know anything about meningitis, so she started with the CDC's website, trying to just get a feel for the subject.
'Viral meningitis is generally less severe and clears up without specific treatment. But bacterial meningitis can be quite severe and may result in brain damage, hearing loss, or learning disabilities.'
What about death? wouldn't they mention it right away? Giselle frowned and made a note of it, but Tate was messaging her again already, and she swapped screens.
tkonstantin: r u busy
She paused, fingers hovering over the keys. She was busy, but Tate would probably want to know why, and telling her why would probably lead to an angry phone call or an accusation that she was lying. And Tate was clearly upset, so even if she lied, it had better be a good one. It would be easier to listen. She was supposed to listen anyway, she was just doing something more important. More important than homesickness, than school, than Tate, even.
Just thinking like she was made her feel like a traitor.
elbasucks4452: No, go ahead.
She typed, then flicked back to the CDC website.

Tate read the list of colleges, clenched her hands so hard that half-moon crescents were the least of her worries. Giselle was applying to good schools. All places she had no chance of getting into. Lovely.
tkonstantin: o
Pause. It was a long pause as she stared at the screen like it had done something to personally offend her. Maybe it had killed Uncle Ivan, or something. If looks could kill, Tate's laptop would be dead, which would be unfortunate because then she would have lost most if not all of her ability to communicate with her best friend.
tkonstantin: moms riding my a** about college tkonstantin: says i should take a leaf out of ur book tkonstantin: stop screwing around w. sc tkonstantin: & consentrate on work tkonstantin: wtf is her problem neway tkonstantin: she nvr cared b4
It was true. Mariska Konstantin had about the mothering ability of a hungry cougar, which is to say, not much. She'd eat Tate alive if she thought it would help her have bigger, better parties.
tkonstantin: ur lucky tkonstantin: ur parents rock tkonstantin: liek t1 vs t7
