My fav kei seem to be nagoya and angura, but I l'm not much of a visual guy. I'm in for the music smile I guess I should say a few words about those two.
Nagoya kei (名古屋系) is a style that was formed in the city of Nagoya, hence the name smile . The main thing about the sound in nagoya kei bands is the notorious influence of western hard-rock and metal bands, mostly melodic death metal. Most of the lyrics deal with dark subjects, like death, decay and sin, and the vocals mix various growling styles with clear and melancholic voices. The visual style of these nagoya kei bands is not as radical as found in other styles; black and dark clothing being the preffered choice. Sometimes this style adds visual elements from eroguro, but the difference is that eroguro focuses more on the image, while nagoya kei does so on the feelings. Some examples of nagoya kei bands are Kuroyume, GULLET, DEATHGAZE, lynch., UnsraW, METH, 9GOATS BLACK OUT, cocklobin.
Angura kei (アングラ系, from the English word "underground") on the other hand it's quite the opossite, as it's a style highly based in the traditional Japanese culture. The angura kei bands often add traditional instruments to their songs, but the music range from paceful and beautiful melodies to much more aggressive pieces. The lyrics and themes are about all that is Japanese, like beautiful landscapes, ghosts stories, romance and meditation on feelings and memories. The visual style is mostly traditional Japanese clothing, sometimes with shiny colors and heavy make-up, and sometimes with just black and white or kabuki theatre elements. A lot of visual kei bands have what I call "an angura stage", often releasing just a single or mini-album with angura kei elements but not dwelling much into it, like D, M or MUCC. However, there are bands that are pure angura kei, such as Kagrra,, Onmyouza, inugami circus dan, Kiryu and OROCHI.
