I've never quite understood the point of live albums. Usually they consist mostly of a band's greatest hits, except in inferior quality (vs. a studio recording), occasionally abridged, and punctuated by screaming from the crowd and "******** yeah!" exclamations from the lead. Live DVDs are more understandable (though only if the band bothers putting on a show: who wants to watch them shuffle around on a dimly lit stage for an hour?), but what's the point of live albums? If I want to listen to the band, I'll listen to the studio recordings. If I want to see them live, I'll do exactly that or watch some fan footage on YouTube.

I never understood either.

Though, in some cases, I like a specific song when its performed live rather than the album verson.

Example:
I liked Behold...The Arctopus's live versions of both Alcoholocaust and You Will Be Reincamated As An Imperial Attack Space Turtle.

Sometimes a band will produce good quality music from a live show. There have even been popular singles where the hit version is a live recording... that doesn't seem to have happened in metal, but maybe everybody keep hoping it will?

Honest to gawd, the first thing I thought of upon reading that was "Susanna". xd

Live dvds, yes. Live albums... no.

Sidenote...
"You Will Be Reincarnated As An Imperial Attack Space Turtle. " Most bizarre song title I have ever read....

I believe this is the leftovers from the 50s-70s music market when you had first of all bands performing live - yes they had studio albums and all, but what mattered were the live shows (or at least that's how I imagine that).

And now bands sometimes (though more and more rarely) would still continue producing live albums.

Now, if you wanted to know of a band for whom a live album made sense. It was Judas Priest and their Live Meltdown. Now, to hear Judas perform the old songs with the new equipment (i.e. Breaking the Law or Diamonds & Rust) - priceless, to hear Ripper sing pre-Ripper songs - educative.

Though, in fact, I would agree that today it has much less sense than in the previous century.
