When I signed on just now, I saw the announcement that Gaia is pulling nicotene sprites from Gaia. That makes me happy. Really really happy.
We Senshi don't need crap like cigarettes or cigars on our avatars! YAY GAIA! biggrin

Personally, I'm betting someone's strongarmed Gaia into this, whether via a lawsuit or a promotion they won't do unless Gaia removes the cigarettes and stuff. I just can't see Gaia doing this all by themselves.
If you look at this from the perspective of making the site more "kid-friendly," it's absolutely preposterous as we still have alcohol items, "sexy" items, weapons, etc. etc.
Also, it sucks for people who are cosplaying characters who happen to be smokers. Or for anyone who actually wanted to buy one of the Carol items.
While it doesn't affect me personally, my opinion on the matter is that it's rather silly and pointless.

I'm more inclined to agree with Yanueh's line of thinking on the matter. Personally, I'm more disappointed that Gaia didn't choose to be upfront on the matter and lay it out straight instead of making up a story about keeping our pixel lungs healthy.
I sincerely hope this is all a joke, since I also believe most Gaians are mature enough at 13 and older to understand the difference between a pixel cigarette and starting a real habit.

Sadly, it seems that people do not know fantasy from reality, which might lead to this being a real "retirement" for the nicotine-based items.
It's a shame, because we're supposed to be an intelligent species, and well... humanity has gone out of its way to show otherwise.

I fear now that I can not have my awesome Team Fortress 2 Spy complete with the removal of nicotine related items.
I mean, what do I have to do now? Get a pixie stick instead? Why not just replace his Awesome Ambassador with a Popgun while you're at it?
I mean seriously, I'm all for no smoking but... isn't this a little... excessive?

I'm kind of disappointed. I'm not a smoker in the real world and don't advocate smoking at all (some close family members died of lung cancer due to smoking), but I happen to like the kiseru items and the long drag. I thought that they were cute and use them on my avis occasionally. I can see the reasoning of getting rid of the items, but I really wish Gaia had given us a bit more warning before pulling them and I think soulbinding them is just silly.

My god! Are they getting the site ready for 8 year old's? (insert high number here)% off teenagers already smoke anyway in real life! And do drugs, and drink, and girls get pregnant! But really, I think they're doing this to lessen the influence.

GS Adrian Tyndall Yanueh Also, it sucks for people who are cosplaying characters who happen to be smokers. Or for anyone who actually wanted to buy one of the Carol items. The Carol items are still available in the Marketplace, incidentally. Precisely. Because every other tobacco item was pulled, the Carol doubled in price.
