It was late, fairly late anyway. The corridors were hardly empty but they were no longer bustling. This suited Y'kar just fine; Kannaroth was hungry, and he didn't want to have to stop every two seconds for her to growl at people, she'd only be grumpier when they finally reached the dining area. Hopefully there would still be enough people around for him to get her some meat, he couldn't imagine that even a rider as lowly as he would be denied food for a young dragon... but you never did know. People really didn't like the green sisters, which he supposed was understandable; it must be embarrassing how much they were outclassing average dragons. Oh, and their temperaments wouldn't help matters.
"If people were a little less stupid and prejudiced, I would be a little less inclined to snap at them," the small green beside him retorted with a snort. "Really, can I be expected to be nice to creatures whose intellect is to me what a wher must be to them? it really is most trying, Mine."
Y'kar gave a lopsided smile and patted her shoulder. "I know Kanna," he murmured as they stepped into the dininghall, "I know. Just try to be nice to whoever's around in the kitchen, okay?" Not merely for the sake of better relations as his tone of voice suggested, but so that they could get the food more quickly, and so that the staff might feel more kindly disposed towards them in the future. It was always best to keep the people in charge of food on your good side, after all.

The evening was pressing on, and Nevele stifled a fierce yawn. Her eyes felt like wood inside the sockets and she idly wondered just how late it was. The time had flitted by earlier with a rush of the general dinner crowd that normally came with the waning of business hours, but now that things have mellowed out, the girl's mind had begun to wander. With her Fosterer feeling under the weather, her day had started earlier than planned and her legs were beginning to feel it.
But fortunately, one of the other kitchen assistants had noticed her wavering on her feet and had promptly sent her out to eat and be on her way home. Nevele happily agreed to this arrangement as she left the steamy kitchen, looking forward to a warm meal of her own before she'd head off for the evening to check on her poor Fosterer. Her small lips were pursed as she worried over Maro's condition, but she tried to assure herself that she was a grown woman and could take care of herself for a day. There was no reason to fret needlessly.
As she had thought, the area was still busy but definitely less so than earlier, and the girl let a loud sigh escape her. She slipped onto a nearby bench and helped herself to what was available. Something else, however, provided a wonderful distraction from the food before her as she noticed a bit of commotion around her in the form of whispers and turning heads. Her eyes glanced idly towards the source and a glimmer of green caught her eye. As the moving form came fully into view, her tired eyes widened at the sight before her.
A Dragon and her Rider. What fortunate timing she had!
She hadn't had an opportunity to see one this close in a while.. at least not since she had watched as other Candidates had stood and Impressed. A childish excitement bubbled within and she kept herself checked to make sure she looked as presentable as possible. Teeming with excitement like a child of four turns was very unbecoming, and probably would make them think her weird. So taking a moment to compose herself, she tried to keep her face calm but cheerful.. although it was quite a task. Never this close!
But as she got a better look at the Rider and Dragon in question, Nevele's mind began winding back. Something seemed familiar about these two, and the fluttering in her stomach gave her the feeling that it was not only her normal nervousness making itself known. The Impression? Yes.. that was probably it.. in fact, it was. She was certain of it. But how to say hello? She wanted very much to talk to them, and if she hesitated too long, they would pass her by. What to say.. what to say?
"O-Oh.. I do believe I've seen you before!" The words came tumbling out before she could stop them, but she remained frozen in her seat with her eyes steadily focused on the Rider (although her gaze flickered towards the dragon at his side). "She's very beautiful.. I would not forget one like her so easily."

Y'kar came to a halt as the girl spoke up, and turned to her with a slightly shy smile. Well, admiration was a change from how most people behaved. This one had to be a little dim though, of course she remembered Kannaroth, there had only been three dragons in the whole clutch for goodness' sake. "Umm, hi there, thank you," he dropped a hand onto Kannaroth's shoulders as the green made an impatient noise. "I think I've seen you around too... you're a candidate, right? I'm Y'kar, this is Kannaroth, nice to meet you... I'm sorry if she's a bit grumpy, she's like this with everyone, it's nothing personal."
Having introduced himself, he shifted uncertainly; oh, was she being false? Did she really hate him and His like most people did? He was nervous, but - he straightened a little - but if she was going to be like that he'd defend Kannaroth, he wouldn't tolerate her being insulted! He wished he didn't have to tolerate standing here pretending to dither uncertainly either, he just wanted to feed his lifemate and get back to the dorm. Still, you couldn't always have everything you wanted he supposed.
"Who is this female?" Kannaroth grumbled. "Surely she can't be important enough to bother with, just ignore her and feed me, will you?"
"Don't let your belly dull your brain," Y'kar chided gently as he stroked the young dragon and continued to watch the girl with something between shyness and wariness. "I can't be sweet/uncertain/but very protective of you to some people but rude to others; word would get around Kanna."
"Shards," the young dragon gave a rumble of displeasure, "you're right of course. Well, fine then, just make it as quick as you can."

Immediately Nevele felt her insecurities gnawing at her. It was a rather sudden outburst, and she certainly wouldn't blame Y'kar and Kannaroth for being a little confused at it. It certainly seemed that way, at least.. No, no, no! She stopped the doubts and pushed them away. How would she ever make friends if she weren't going to be a little more persistent? She would drop back to the people she had known before, that's what, so it was best to take the opportunity and seize it with both hands and an open heart.
"Yes, I'm a Candidate." She smiled pleasantly and nodded at the two of them. "My name is Nevele; a pleasure to meet the both of you." She wondered momentarily: conversations tended to die at this point without something in common. Unfortunately she was so bad at jumping into them anyway... already she felt a little awkward.
But Nevele checked the situation. A Dragon and her Rider here obviously meant they were in need of food.. perhaps she should let them do that. Keeping them here might put her in displeasure with them..
"O-Oh, but you're probably here for a reason. I'm sorry to have sidetracked you." She laughed a little to hide some of her embarrassment, but it didn't stop the color from rising to her cheeks. She opened her hands to indicate the array that was waiting on the table she had sat at a few moments before. "You're welcome to share what's placed here but if you like I could ask the kitchens. I work back there and I'm sure it would be a pleasure if you and Kannaroth desire something else." She hung simple hopes on the last words: maybe they would stay and talk to her. About what, she wasn't certain, but she would dearly enjoy the company.

Y'kar allowed himself to relax a little, and offered Nevele a smile; seemed she was the shy sort too, this could get awkward. Ah well, didn't bother him one way or the other. "Umm... Well I don't want to pull you away from your food, but some raw meat would be good? I can go ask myself though, I don't want to stop you from eating just because Kannaroth wants to." Yes, yes he did, he'd much rather have her do it fore him than have to deal with the grumpy kitchen workers.
"I don't care who fetches it so long as it comes soon," Kannaroth grumbled. "I'm never going to get any bigger at all if I'm not fed, you know." She was never going to be big, she knew that, but she'd prefer not to end up a total runt if at all possible. At this rate, however, she was probably going to shrink. "If one of you doesn’t get me food soon, I’ll get it myself," she muttered to her lifemate.
Y'kar glanced down at the small green, a slightly worried expression on his face. "Please be patient Kanna," he murmured, "you'll be fed soon, I promise." It could be quite funny to see the havoc she'd wreak trying to get the food herself, but on the whole he thought it was probably best to avoid the situation. They did, after all, need to keep on the good side of the kitchen staff.
