During the night, each and every one of the five students had been plucked from their bed and brought to this place, this cold, dark room just barely illuminated by the droning hum of a light bulb overhead. By the time they would start to stir, a loud crackle of static would nearly scare them out of their skins.

"Good morning! Or is it afternoon?" The syrupy sweet voice was the type that made teeth rot, and a girlish giggle floated throughout the spacious, if chilly room for a moment before the voice spoke again. "We do hope you enjoyed your little nap, but class is back in session! Now, listen carefully--you see the three doors in front of you, yes?"

If they stared hard enough into the darkness, yes, they would see three doors. In fact, there were only these three doors in the entire room; one white, one grey, and one black. "You have two minutes* to pick one of these doors and head inside before a deadly neurotoxin floods this entire room! So if you don't want to die, well, pick quickly! Oh, and do make sure to read the riddles on each door... They may just keep you alive in the end!" More giggling this time, but it was somehow deranged. Soon, the students were left in utter silence.

The White door read: "Kindness can go a long way, but there is such a thing as going too far."

The Grey door read: "Things are not as they seem. Remember that humanity is selfish at its roots."

The Black door read: "You can neither antagonize, nor pacify. Sometimes the best option is to do nothing at all."

Time was ticking.

Apparently someone had replaced her alarm clock with a ten year old on crack. That was Audrey's one and only thought before the grasp of what was actually happening gripped her mind, and her eyes went wide. Several thoughts and incredibly vile words ran through her mind, and as she opened her mouth, her eyes fell on a familiar form. In all of Barren Pines, there was only one dark-skinned male with long brown dreads.

"Khal? Khal!" Hopping up, she slid over towards her semi-somewhat-sorta boyfriend. She was a Negaverse lieutenant, and was not horribly concerned for her own safety. However, Khal was at least moderately important to her happiness at that point in time, and she would be most concerned for his.

At his side, waiting for him to acknowledge her presence as she always did, honey eyes skimmed the darkness. The three doors were readily evident to her keen sight, and the words were clear if puzzling. Word games were for the feeble of mind, and Audrey was most certainly not that! "What the hell is going on?!" It certainly wasn't easy, sitting on this cold floor while wearing nothing other than a the gold and rainbow star shirt she'd worn out to stargaze, and the black shorts to go with. She didn't even have a pair of socks to keep her toes from freezing!

At least, as Linarite, she had a decent outfit.

Khaldun had been up way too late the night before. He sure as hell couldn't have managed a whole six hours of sleep. Even with the noise from the speaker, he was hard-pressed to find a reason to open his eyes. Something about doors and neurotoxin, didn't seem that important to wake him up for. Just another minute... or ten... or a few hours... but Audrey's voice, and not the one that was giggling and giving instructions, was the one that seriously woke him up. Audrey shouldn't be in his room. He hadn't even gotten to third base yet, so having made it all the way to a home run wasn't likely.

"Hnnngh. What." Khaldun yawned, stretched, and looked over at Audrey with a reassuring if sleepy smile before pulling himself into a sitting position. Audrey would definitely get a glimpse of what he wore to bed, but it was a bit of a letdown - just a pair of old Hillworth pants, as Khaldun was not made of any denomination of money. He looked a mess - mainly the lack of hairtie, sending his dreads falling just about everywhere, much of them over his face. A few shakes got most out of the way, but this wasn't the time or place for headbanging. He took in the surroundings slowly, not at his most efficient straight out of what little sleep he'd had. ********, was it cold in here. Why was it so cold out... in... where the ******** was this?

"What the hell..." Audrey was only human, after all, and attending Barren Pines at that, so he couldn't reveal his Hematite guise to her. He'd have to stay Khaldun for as long as he was stuck in this room. And it was not a fantastic place to be, especially seeing as the two of them weren't alone in the room. He disregarded them; the most important thing right now was to save himself. And then Audrey, maybe, if only because he'd have a hell of a time getting another girlfriend. The teenager took her small hands in his own, tightly, and gave her a serious look, maybe even an attempt to look brave or macho. "I don't know, but we need to get out of here! Come on!"

Without waiting for an answer, he was pulling them both to their feet.

Not even having a practical girlfriend, Remi was even less inclined to wake up, but it was hard to roll over when you were on a cold floor without any covers. The high-pitched voice didn’t help either, and the writer had to wonder when he put Aqua on his Itunes playlist. Finding out he was devoid of his bed and his headphones was a slow realization, which was as best as anyone was going to get with the teen. Whoever the owner of the voice was, they didn’t realistically account for the fact that most people, especially kids his age, didn’t get up on the first try and defiantly not in 2 minutes.

If it hadn’t been for others talking, an uncomfortable floor, and the word ‘neurotoxin’, he would have stubbornly tried to fall asleep for another 10 minutes. Instead, he sat up and rubbed his eyes, confused as to what was being said and only retaining about a third of it all. Doors, Neurotoxin, and Riddles. They didn’t make sense, but they were the most important points he managed to pick out.

Even more confusing than this was the fact he was in a room with four other people in just his boxers and t-shirt. It was a good thing that last night was one of the few times he actually decided to wear clothes to bed. With everyone else dressed in the same fashion, it had the feeling of a slumber party rather than a kidnapping.

Groggily picking himself up, Remi looked about to everyone and then to the doors. “What now?”

Sam had always been more of a light sleeper, the type to be roused by the slightest sound or movement... and it was always such a hassle to fall back asleep after something like that, too. If he could only count how many times he'd lost sleep because of a whisper in the night.

Which made it even more of a shock when the roar of static roused him, goosebumps rising along his skin as he hastily sat up, vibrant eyes wide as he took everything in. Creepy room. Flickering lights. Way too cold; he wrapped his arms around himself and began to rub, shivering. Other voices, one in particular that sounded like a My Little Pony gone horribly wrong... and saying something about doors and deadly toxins. Huh?

The pink haired boy pulled himself upright with a low groan, trying to stretch out a kink in his neck. Whoever had dropped him here sure wasn't gentle about it. Why hadn't he woken up? He frowned to himself, puzzled; was he dreaming? Probably. Man, he really needed to stick to his guns on that no-pizza policy. At least he wasn't dreaming about nomming on someone's intestines this time around. He shuddered again at the thought. There we go. Next time he had a snack craving before bed, just think of that.

... one heck of a lucid dream. Did he usually dream himself into his jammies?

Sam pulled himself to his feet, looking at the others for the first time. Four others, kind of familiar. "I guess... we pick a door?" he murmured in response, giving a loose shrug of his shoulders as he looked them over. Black, white, and gray. Without taking his eyes off the doors, he quickly stepped over to gently shake the other girl's shoulders to try and coax her up. Dream or whatever, they were in this together. Right?

Macie awoke abruptly, when someone was shaking her shoulder. She stood up and tugged self-consciously at the hem of her night shirt, which only just barely covered her butt. The front had a picture of a microscope, with "You don't need this" written across her chest. It had been a gag gift from some friends, but she still wore it to bed. When she realized it wouldn't do any good, no matter how much tugging she did, the black-haired girl wrapped her arms around herself, as she looked around wide eyed at the others in the room with her.

After the voice faded away, her eyebrows furrowed. Neurotoxin? That sounded...uh, yeah (Although she couldn't help but wonder if there'd be any possible way to take a 'sample' before leaving the room. Maybe it was best not to try, though...).

"Pick a door? Does anyone know how we got here?" she said finally. She thought she recognized a few people in the room, but didn't really care to make social niceties by introducing herself. This was obviously a dream, since you only appeared naked (and she was almost naked, right?) in dreams. So why bother introducing herself to dream people.

Maybe they could help her with these weird 'riddles' though.

"Oh, good! None of you died in the transferring process!" The voice was suddenly back and sounding delighted, and they would even hear what sounded like hands clapping. "One minute, boys and girls! Hurry up and pick, you don't have time to stand around drooling!" More mad giggling, and there was silence for the time.

"By the way, there's one teensy detail I forgot to mention!" The voice chimed in again, and one could almost sense the leer behind the deceptively sweet sound. "The more people there are in a room... the less chance you'll all survive in there! So be good children and spread yourselves out for your sake--believe me, spread yourselves out for your sake!" It was repeated firmly before wild laughter swallowed up any other intelligible words, and the sound cut out again.

Time was ticking.

Macie had heard enough. If this dream would end when she picked a door, then that's exactly what she'd do. And if it wasn't a dream...well, she hoped that wasn't the case. How did a school let their students get kidnapped like this? The voice's comment about spreading out finally prompted her to act. She crossed the room, ignoring everyone else and quickly scanned through the one line riddles.

They didn't make any sense to her, not even a little. She had never been a particularly mean or selfish person, and as far as she knew, it had never benefited her to be so. Here, though, the doors seemed to encourage bad behavior. But was it a trick? Did they want them to behave selfishly and then screw themselves over in the end? If the voice WAS telling the truth, though, and the less people per room, the better, then...

She grasped the handle of the White Door, picking one with a more self-serving riddle. Macie found that the door pushed inwards, and as she went in, she quickly slammed it shut behind her, grabbed onto the handle and wedged her foot in front of the bottom of the door. She had no intention of letting anyone else in the room with her.

Boy was she going to feel dumb if she was completely wrong about everything.

There was no time to try and answer the girl's question, if he'd even had an answer to give her. The voice spoke again (sugar crazed Jigsaw spawn?), and no sooner was it finished than did she dart straight off into the white door. Sam made a move to slip through right after her - two people would have to head into two of the doors anyway. Of the three, he'd been eying the white door. None of the riddles sounded good, but that one seemed the least menacing. Maybe. Who knew?

But when he made a lunge for the door and pushed, nothing gave way. He pushed harder, forcing all his weight against it. Nothing. Had it locked automatically after her? ... it must have. There was no other explanation that he could think of. If he only knew.

So instead, pressed for time now, Sam lunged for the next closest door. He dimly realized as he burst inside that it was the gray one. 'Things are not as they seem... ' If only they weren't. Maybe the pink haired boy was still convinced he was dreaming. But things kind of seemed pretty dismal from where he was standing. Toxic gases, odds of survival. Yeah. Wouldn't it be great if this all just turned out to be a big surprise party or something? He wouldn't see that one coming.

Khaldun pulled Audrey roughly in the direction of the black door, which had yet to be tried by anyone else in the room. He didn't bother to read the words on the door, instead releasing his grip on one of Audrey's hands to grasp the handle. Tried it, tried it again, not even thinking while he stared at Audrey. Turned out, it was wasn't an easy door to open if one wasn't paying attention to the way the handle had to be turned fully. He had to let go of Audrey's other hand in order to try the door with force, and then with one more brutal turn of the handle, had it open.

He gave Audrey a look that could either be called confident or oblivious. The teen stepped into the unknown, waving one hand for her to follow him. ******** what the loudspeaker voice said, right? There ought to be safety in numbers.

Doors. If this was a matter of life and death, why were they picking doors? When did kidnappers start taking a page out of game shows anyways? Pick door one for horrible mutilation, Door two for melting in acid, and door three for a brand new car! He doubted a Honda Odyssey was behind any of these.

While he had one minute, he went to actually reading the doors, but everyone else either was quick to decide or didn’t give a damn. Girl one rushed and picked the white door, not even bothering to hesitate in her decision. He wished he had that much confidence in deciding on a door that could possibly decide what way you were going to be decapitated. Another boy brushed past him and tried the white, and finding it wouldn’t move, went to the next one. Seemed a flighty decision to him, but it seemed White was no longer an option. Let’s just hope that wasn’t the winning door in the end or else he would have to haunt that girl when he died. If he died.

Remi swallowed. Dieing was not a good idea to think about right now. Just as he began reading again, the clinging couple took the Black door and after some force, went inside. Great! He was the only one left standing, and that meant he could be the one left to take in the deadly fumes. Panicking, he read fast to the two doors that were still left. While the last door sounded great (doing nothing was what Remi was best at), he now had to account for numbers. Door White was out. Door Black had two people, and door Gray was occupied by one guy.

"Things are not as they seem. Remember that humanity is selfish at its roots."

Curse you evil Sphinx! Sucking in his breath, he grabbed the door handle and went inside. Safety in numbers, huh? He hoped he made the right decision in this bizarre game. Remi doubted the consolation prize would mean surviving with your neck intact.

At this point, Audrey was at a total loss. The voice had said to spread out, and had there been actually only three people, that would have made sense. That first twit behind the white door probably had the best idea. It had sounded like her body was slamming against the door, so either she was locking the others out, or she was dead. The teen wasn't entirely sure which, and didn't exactly want to deal with it.

Besides, Khal might actually keep her safe. The pragmatic, practical part of her that was wholly spawned of Negaverse energy also consoled her. If Khal mysteriously died, she could always handle whatever was there as Linarite. Shaking her head, Audrey called after him. "Wait for me!"

With that, she ran into the room, and the door slowly clicked shut behind her. No going back now, the other side was no doubt full of gas by now.

As the door closed behind them, all the students could have sworn they heard a faint giggle and whisper through the crackle of the intercom. With the final "diiiie!" the doors closed and a faint hiss of what could only be gas began to fill the room they'd just left. Out of the fire and into the frying pan, as each door held its own nightmare within.

Macie

Clever girl! Macie had successfully barricaded herself into the room all by her lonesome, which should have meant her chances of survival would be quite high.

It also meant she was all alone, staring at the monster sitting only five feet away, staring at her and blinking slowly, as if it had just been woken up. Its heavy jaws parted before it bellowed at her, a sound that shook the very room even as it lurched to its feet and lunched. Its strange, writhing hands very nearly snatched at her torso before there was the sound of rattling chains, and the brute jerked to an unexpected halt. Macie could now see that it was chained to the wall--and behind it, there was a window, brightly lit up with the moonlight's glow.

If she could just get to that window, there was a chance she could escape!

With a grunt, the beast seemed to huff at her for a moment before it went to sulkingly sit back in its corner. No matter where she moved, it wouldn't get up again. Why, she could probably even get close enough to slap it if she really wanted to. If she dared to even reach out and touch the window though, the monster would be on its feet and on her in an instant.

At her feet lay three items. An axe, a haunch of oozing, bloody meat... and a key. Where the chain was attached to the wall, there was a keyhole. She had one shot for the window, should she choose the right item.... but which one would provide her escape?

So much for trying to spread themselves out! It would become painfully aware that the two boys weren't alone in the room--but they didn't have the monster problem that Macie had, right? A girl was huddled in the center of the room, sobbing into her hands, her face shrouded by the shadows of the semi-dark room and her long tangled hair. The source of her terror was soon apparent; shrieking, screaming bat-like creatures were swooping around her at random, their wicked teeth bared as though to bite at any moment.

Behind the shivering, collapsed woman (was she a student? Who was she?), there was a window, and in front of Sam and Remi lay what looked like a vial of chemicals, a broken mirror, and a tennis racket. There was only one of each, naturally, so each boy would have to choose something different.

What would they do? Help the poor woman, or simply deal with the bats? If only they could get to that window, surely they could escape from this hellish scene and be safe for another day...

Getting a bit bold are we, Khaldun?

As both students rushed into the room, the heavy door closing and locking behind them, it was clear that the duo had chosen the darkest room of all, the only light faintly shining through what appeared to be a dirt-caked window on the other side of the room. Shadows took up the majority of the room, three silhouettes scattered among the floor. Though it took some time for their eyes to adjust, they soon came to recognize what appeared to be a metal bucket, a haunch of dried out meat, and a rusty crowbar.

As they two drew closer to the window (as it was their only obvious means of escape), it was then that they noticed the small, beady red eyes that stared back at them from the darkness, almost glowing, even. Was that panting, they heard? And what about that gleam beneath the eyes when the eyes moved towards them... could those be razor sharp teeth grinning back at them?

Out from the darkness trotted a small doglike creature, the owner of the red eyes and the gleaming mouth of teeth.

Awww, how fluffy and precious....

What a horrible way to be sent off? Hearing that horrible voice made him want to grit his teeth as it faded in his ears with the final click of the door. It was final. He picked Grey.

The room he entered wasn’t a drop to a pit of spikes or starving wolves, but it wasn’t without it’s threats. The first thing that caught him was the shadows, and in this, he noticed bats. BATS! RABID FLYING RATS!!

He stepped back and hit the door, pressing against it as he looked up and around himself. The room was teaming with the nasty buggers, but in the darkness was light. A window farther off showed their escape and showering light down was a sobbing girl. Well, what SOUNDED like a girl. Since he could not see her face, he had a sick feeling that her body might be deformed or torn to pieces. Remi now regretted all the horror movies he had watched in his lifetime which had not only gave him a lot of horrible images to imagine, but did nothing to desensitize him to the real deal.

“We’re in - a room - with bats.” Whispering seemed the best bet right now. The little creatures seemed to be focused on the sobbing girl, and Remi wasn’t the one to start making his presence know. His eyes shot out to the other pink-haired kid and started to crawl towards him. “Hey kid. Pst!” There was really no safe place to look. A sobbing girl made his heart twist and the bats above made him want to start hopping up and down while shaking his hands in a schoolgirl’s fit. Ewww!!!!

What he did notice was the three items. Crawling, he saw that it was a broken mirror, a vial of chemicals, and a tennis racket. Greeeaaatt. If he had to start smacking off bats with a tennis racket, he was going to smack his face. They just went from game shows to children’s movie. This little girl sure had a messed up sense of humor.

Speaking of girls, he tried to wave the sobbing girl to look up. Who was she? Did he know her? Why wasn’t she over here? “Hey girl. Hey.” A bat flew down near her and Remi reared back. She wasn’t moving because of the bats. Still, she was RIGHT THERE near the window. Why hadn’t she reached for any of these three items? Why didn’t she try escaping or was she just in shock?

Whatever the reason, he hoped he picked the better door.

Khaldun stood there in nothing but pants, blinking at the darkness while he kept to the wall near the door. Audrey flickered by as a shadow before the door slammed shut and gave a telltale click. He snapped his fingers a few times, trying to direct her over to where he was hiding without making it too obvious. If this was a trick, they could both walk out and celebrate with a well-deserved make-out session. If it was actually dangerous in here, well, it paid to have a ready and willing human shield on the off chance he'd need a distraction. Audrey really had plenty of uses to him here at Barren Pines. She'd have to see it his way - love meant sacrifices, or so he thought he'd read somewhere before. It sure sounded good for his purposes.

Once his eyes adjusted to the minute amount of light coming in through the opposite window, he slowly realized they were trapped. This was a room with only one door, and so far as he could tell it was no longer a way out. At least, that had been an awful lot of hissing coming from the starting room before the door had shut. Looking around for options, Khaldun spied the crowbar, and picked it up off the ground. He hefted it experimentally. There was no sense in being unarmed here, or ever. And even if he did change into Negaverse form, he'd still be unarmed, so there wasn't even a point now. That's when he heard the panting, and glanced into the corners of the room. Red eyes stared back. Son of a b***h.

The thing that lurked in the darkness turned out to be nothing but a mangy white dog, though that was an awfully weird mouth for a dog... Khaldun tapped the rusty crowbar against one hand lightly a few times, thinking, glancing from the dog to various other parts of the room. Before Audrey had any opportunity to stop him, he jumped forward and swung the crowbar down hard on the creature, not wanting to give it the opportunity to strike first.
