SIT UP STRAIGHT! YOU THERE, NO CHEWING! TIMMY, PUT DOWN THAT SLINGSHOT!

This is your introduction to the music of Supernatural with your teacher, a walking blasphemy (Also known as Vee, which is shorter). Each week, I will update this with a new band and we shall listen and discuss! This is a totally optional class and really just a bit of fun for me - as I basically want to make sweet love to Dean's music taste.

Previous lessons will go in my journal which is open to everyone, so you can look back on them.

THIS WEEKS BAND

METALLICA

First mentioned in: Season 1, Episode 1: Pilot
SAM: And two, Black Sabbath? Motorhead? Metallica? It’s the greatest hits of mullet rock.
DEAN: Well, house rules, Sammy. Driver picks the music, shotgun shuts his cakehole.

Memorable appearance in the show:
While the music itself has never been played in the show, during the episode 'Phantom Traveller', Dean is humming the track 'Some Kind Of Monster' from the St. Anger album to calm himself down. (As a Metallica fan pre-dating the show, I find it unusual that he chose this track as it's from what is widely considered the bands worst album. Enter Sandman would surely be more fitting for Dean).

Ever been an alias?
In the aforementioned 'Phantom Traveller', Dean uses the alias 'Dr. Hetfield' while trying to contact the air hostess. I believe there's been an Ulrich one time as well but I can't remember when. James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich are the founding members, lead singer/guitarist and drummer respectively.

Why so awesome?
You enjoy the rock bands of today? I bet you any money Metallica inspired them. They've been releasing albums steadily since 1983, survived line-up changes, addictions and critical pannings. These guys are like Dean in a way, kick them down to the bottom, they rise back up better than ever. Their live shows are truly a sight to behold, often employing fancy pyrotechnics and honest to God lasers to enhance the music.

Why I think they fit so well with Dean.
You only have to listen to them - which will probably be the answer for most bands when I'm doing this - to hear why they're such a match for our fearless leader. You listen to a lot of their lyrics and it's like a running commentary in Dean's head, the music is angry but the lyrics can be so heartfelt and desperate. And as I've said, they're like him in the respect you can never keep them down for long.

MUST LISTEN TRACKS

The Unforgiven Pt. 1
This track reminds me of Dean's descent into hell, how he dealt being there, with Alistair and how he is when he returns. It can also be seen as a tribute to Dean's relationship with the angels. There are also shades of his relationship with his father and brother throughout. This is basically Dean's theme song. It is also my favourite Metallica track.

Enter Sandman
As mentioned before, I think this would have been more fitting for Dean - if the writers of Phantom Traveller were going for the 'he's a demon hunter' joke with Some Kind Of Monster. Lyrically it's kind of a horror story which reminds me of Dean's slightly odd childhood.

Sad But True
Another Dean in hell track, with him almost creating a new version of himself to do these unspeakable things he was made to do while he was down there.

Dean hums Metallica to calm down, listening to it to get angry-- like footballers do.

Footballers hum Metallica?

I don't see that album being considered their worst as a deciding factor in Dean calming himself down with it. I can actually see him liking it despite it's unpopularity, because he's Dean, and when he's in the mood, he'll song Bon Jovi. lol

Dean is VERY Metallica. (I'm also a "fan" (I say it in quotes because it never went beyond my CD player, sadly) since before the show) If he needed a band dedicated to him, they're it.

Btw - Master of Puppets <3

Ehh... I fixed it. It made sense when I thought about it. I listen to them once in awhile, but gotta admit they're not my favorite.

LOL. Nooo.

It wasn't that I was confused - though, that edit is certainly a different sentence all together. xD I just...didn't know they did that. <3

I heard Hugh Jackman listened to it to get in the right headspace for Wolverine too.
It's good for that.

Mmm, Dean probably would like St. Anger just because everyone hated it, haha.

I love Master Of Puppets, it's my favourite album.

I saw them for my 22nd back in March at a smallish arena gig, I then saw them again in August at a festival which was the most amazing show I'd ever been to.
At the start of One, they sent up fireworks to get the idea of war across, sent smoke out over the 10/20K people watching them and oh my God, amazing. Just amazing.

It's a shame they're not allowed to use them on the show due to budget constraints, I reckon they'd sound amazing when they're heading into battle with Lucy.

I wish they would show that more on the show. I think Dean definatly would be singing to him self a lot in the upsoming episodes. Hopefully it will be some good 80's headbanging music.

Oh definitely!
I love when he sings on the show, it always amuses me.
Like when he's singing 'I Can't Fight This Feeling', can't hear it without hearing his voice in my head, same with 'Wanted, Dead or Alive'.

I'm trying to think of songs I want to hear him singing.
Would 'Shout At The Devil' be too cliche?

Motley Crue~ <3

Cliche or not, SOMEONE should sing it. Dean is number one on my list, though.

I agree, I really want Dean to sing it!

Or Sympathy For The Devil as well?
I'm terrible going with all these devil puns.

Oh God, I want Lucifer so badly to have a moment where he has to say "Please allow me to introduce myself."
I think the music geek in me would DIE.
PostPosted: Fri Nov 27, 2009 2:23 pm

After reading that line, now I am totally singing that song in my head!
I would die if they played it on the show. heart

It would fit so well as well.
Maybe if they had it playing after the guys have defeated Lucifer, driving away in the Impala with that playing.
Perhaps Dean switches it off part way through as it's just not appropriate.

wow, that would so work
maybe you should send a email to Kripke about maybe putting that in. wink

We do have choices.

I liked everything up to and including the Black Album. After that, things started going downhill for Hetfield and the gang.

Oh, did you hear that Ulrich is going deaf? Lawlawlawl. That guy is a douche. He damn well knows people at Metallica concerts will want to hear some of the old stuff. They're giving him his money, why should he refuse to oblige? At least he's finally "allowing" some of the old stuff again. The St. Anger tour, well, angered me. ._.

Aaaanyway, a line or two from Sympathy for the Devil would be quite giggle-inducing. XD I'd also sasy The Four Horseman could be a fun track, except they have Time as one instead of War... Or Bad Omen. Or The Conjuring. Hell, there are a lot of Megadeth songs that I'd like to be featured, haha. XD

...I choose to go down swingin'.User Image
