SIT UP STRAIGHT! YOU THERE, NO CHEWING! TIMMY, PUT DOWN THAT SLINGSHOT!
This is your introduction to the music of Supernatural with your teacher, a walking blasphemy (Also known as Vee, which is shorter). Each week, I will update this with a new band and we shall listen and discuss! This is a totally optional class and really just a bit of fun for me - as I basically want to make sweet love to Dean's music taste.
Previous lessons will go in my journal which is open to everyone, so you can look back on them.
THIS WEEKS BAND

METALLICA
First mentioned in: Season 1, Episode 1: Pilot
SAM: And two, Black Sabbath? Motorhead? Metallica? It’s the greatest hits of mullet rock.
DEAN: Well, house rules, Sammy. Driver picks the music, shotgun shuts his cakehole.
Memorable appearance in the show:
While the music itself has never been played in the show, during the episode 'Phantom Traveller', Dean is humming the track 'Some Kind Of Monster' from the St. Anger album to calm himself down. (As a Metallica fan pre-dating the show, I find it unusual that he chose this track as it's from what is widely considered the bands worst album. Enter Sandman would surely be more fitting for Dean).
Ever been an alias?
In the aforementioned 'Phantom Traveller', Dean uses the alias 'Dr. Hetfield' while trying to contact the air hostess. I believe there's been an Ulrich one time as well but I can't remember when. James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich are the founding members, lead singer/guitarist and drummer respectively.
Why so awesome?
You enjoy the rock bands of today? I bet you any money Metallica inspired them. They've been releasing albums steadily since 1983, survived line-up changes, addictions and critical pannings. These guys are like Dean in a way, kick them down to the bottom, they rise back up better than ever. Their live shows are truly a sight to behold, often employing fancy pyrotechnics and honest to God lasers to enhance the music.
Why I think they fit so well with Dean.
You only have to listen to them - which will probably be the answer for most bands when I'm doing this - to hear why they're such a match for our fearless leader. You listen to a lot of their lyrics and it's like a running commentary in Dean's head, the music is angry but the lyrics can be so heartfelt and desperate. And as I've said, they're like him in the respect you can never keep them down for long.
MUST LISTEN TRACKS
The Unforgiven Pt. 1
This track reminds me of Dean's descent into hell, how he dealt being there, with Alistair and how he is when he returns. It can also be seen as a tribute to Dean's relationship with the angels. There are also shades of his relationship with his father and brother throughout. This is basically Dean's theme song. It is also my favourite Metallica track.
Enter Sandman
As mentioned before, I think this would have been more fitting for Dean - if the writers of Phantom Traveller were going for the 'he's a demon hunter' joke with Some Kind Of Monster. Lyrically it's kind of a horror story which reminds me of Dean's slightly odd childhood.
Sad But True
Another Dean in hell track, with him almost creating a new version of himself to do these unspeakable things he was made to do while he was down there.
