Etain had not expected her brief encounter with the brave grey Jala to have come to this, and though he was not yet here there was very little doubt in Etain's mind just who the father of these fruit were. Not only had she been rather slack on male companionship in her life thus far..but the entwined trunks and budding fruit left subtle clues that could not be mistaken for any other.

While one half of the combined tree was quite clearly her's - a golden trunk with soft violet leaves, the other shone a dull slate grey and was punctuated by blackened stripes and leaves. It was an odd looking tree to say the least but Tanaris had been a good looking stallion and despite strange color combinations she felt pretty sure the foal would turn out smart looking.

Speaking of the fruits....Etain examined them - There were only two but they seemed healthy, not that she was any great judge on that, she didn't have much experience on such things after all, but she would know if they were sickly...wouldn't she? of course she would.

Raize glanced up at the growing tree with slightly curious eyes, he had never been to the fruitlands before - but then he'd never known a Nequus mother before either. To be honest until he met Etain, Raize hadn't ever thought about wanting to know one...and he certainly hadn't expected for her to become one so soon after their meeting..but he was somewhat excited about the entire prospect.

"So where is your grey friend?" He asked Etain as she studied the tree thoroughly.

" Soon I should hope..perhaps he was farther away when he felt the call and is traveling here as we speak" Etain answered the Canis, she wasn't worried too much quite yet. Tanaris would show up - she was sure of it, and in the meantime - well she would do fine on her own.

___________________________________________________________

As time went on however it soon became apparent that Tanaris would not be coming and Etain grew to depend on Raize the ever faithful Canis to keep going. It was hard even with his help and by the time the two fruit hatched the golden mare had lost several pounds and was no longer the picture of health she had been before this entire situation. But she had managed..and now two beautiful foals were her reward.

The small purple male foal looked around at his new surroundings. He had recently emerged from his fruit and was getting used to all the sights and smells and sounds of this strange new world. Once he got on his feet he could get a better look at things, his legs were still a bit unstable but for now they held him up. He looked around, his eyes fell on a golden Nequus and he knew that to be his mother...but where was? There was only one Nequus here and some odd looking creature, that couldn't be what he was looking for.

His eyes fell upon the tree, one half reflecting his mothers colors and the other. Well he had a pretty good idea of what the other half represented. It was of the one who had not been here. As a fruit he had heard his mothers voice often, either talking to herself, that strange little creature or the fruit. But never had he heard the others voice. He was suddenly filled with an emotion he wasn't familiar with. But what he did know was they he was mad. Mad that his father wasn't here. He resented the stallion for not being here when he was needed the most. He stared at the half of the tree that represented a pain, an anger that would not easily go away.

Etain stepped away from where she had been dozing in the shade of the tree as her purple son decided to make himself known to the world. He was as handsome as she had always known he would be - just as his sleeping sister was beautiful. Moving towards the youngling she bend her head to nuzzle him briefly.

"Hello little one" She cooed at the foal, since being faced with the arrival of fruit Etain had found a softness within her that had not existed before - or perhaps it had and he had merely not noticed it. "I expect I should name the two of you..." She remarked her voice trailing off as she looked between the wakeful colt and his still resting sister. Etain had been testing out names in her own mind for quite some time now and had arrived at what she thought were good choices for the two foals.

"I think you shall be called Da'rhel...and your sister Meira, do you approve of these choices?" She asked the young foal with a touch of amusement in her voice.

He nuzzled his mother back. At least she showed that she loved him, unlike the other. When she spoke his name he thought about it for a moment. It was a good name, but he wondered was it similar to his fathers name? If so he would need a different name. "What was fathers name?" He asked not yet agreeing to his name.

He glanced over at his sister who was sleeping nearby. He colors were very similar to that of their mothers. His own hide, he glanced at it, must be like his fathers. It disgusted him. He didn't want to look anything like the stallion. He shook his body slightly wishing that his sires pattern would just go away. It didn't work, but it was at least worth a try. He sighed and looked back at his damn...for comfort? No, he didn't really need comfort. What he needed was answers.

Etain had not prepared herself about hat to tell the foals about thier father, to be honest she had been kept so busy attempting to keep them healthy that she hadn't really had time too...though she had once in a while sadly wondered why Tanaris had not come. Had she done something wrong to drve him away?...it was true she barely knew him but she hadn't thought thier meeting had gone badly..perhaps he'd just used her. It was a sad thought but not completey unheard of.

This however was not the time to think about such things and she brought her mind back to the present, plastering a smile on her face so that the young foal wouldn't think her sad. "His name was Tanaris, would you like to know more about him?" She didn't really have much to offer - but she woul tell what she knew.

His ears twitched as his mother revealed the name of his sire, Tanaris. That was nothing like Da'Rehl, good he could keep his name. His face contorted in disgust when his damn asked him if he wanted to know more about his father. What a horrible thought. He had no intention of learning more. "No I don't want to know about him." He said with a hateful tone in his voice.

Not wanting to upset his dam too much he decided to perhaps change the subject. "Da'Rehl is a good name." He stated, his head perked up a bit as he said it. Yes it was a good name, for it gave no indication of his father. The last thing he needed was for others to associate him with his father. No, he hated that stallion even though he didn't know him.

Etain wasn't prepared for the hatred that oozed from the colt at the mention of his sire, Etain herself was hurt by the steeds disappearing act..but it seemed the colt had had a far deeper reaction. Well..she wasn't about to ramp on the young creatures feelings - he was young after all, and young creatures were prone to over exaggeration. Maybe in time he'd ant to know more.

"well..if you ever change you mind.." she offered letting her voice trail off as the foal piped up again. Ah well at least he was pleased about something then 'I'm glad you like it...I spent many days thinking about it while you were still jut a tiny little fruit" she told him, bumping him slightly with her muzzle. "Do you think your sister will approve of hers?"

Da'Rehl glanced towards his sleeping sister and then recalled the name his Dam mentioned, Meria. It sounded good to him. But was it really his decision? Shouldn't the filly be allowed to agree on it as well. Maybe she already did, Da'Rehl did hatch from his fruit after his sister. "Yes, it is a good name for her."

Da'Rehl glanced at the intertwined trees again. How could this have happened? Didn't his father want to be here. He was so confused he wanted to....well he didn't know quite what he wanted to do. Although the hatred filled him, he still needed to feel loved, and with only his Dam here then he would have to settle for just her love. He stepped closer to her, his legs a bit more stable now. He pushed his head into her, taking a deep breath, her scent filling him with happiness. Her body was soothing and warm against his, yes this was what he needed right now.

Etain draped her head over the back of the small colt as he stepped forward pulling him tightly against her hide and letting out a deep breath - so what if Tanaris hadn't come...so what if he never showed up, the encounter had been worth it the mare thought to herself as she looked upon her two foal's. No matter how hard it had been already and how hard it was yet to be.

'Well I hope she will like it as well" She told the colt "I'm afraid she fell asleep nearly as soon as she hatched, tired right out I imagine" She said with a slight chuckle.

So she hadn't agreed to the name yet, Da'Rehl thought of he enjoyed the close presence of his Dam. His eyes fell upon his sleeping sister again. He always wanted to go over and lay down with her, he too was tired. Emerging from the fruit was no easy task. But he could sleep later.

It was then he caught sight of that odd creature he had seen when he first emerged. He knew it was not a Nequus, but what exactly was it. And why was it here at the tree. "What is that?" He asked as he eyed Raize.

"Well its about time he noticed me" Raize remarked as he lifted his red head to study the colt, letting his tongue loll out of his mouth in a wolfish grin. It was something some young foals might find a bit daunting but Raize laying as he was in teh shade of the treee didn't seem otherwise threatening and even gave a hearty yawn as he spoke.

"shush Raize" Etain told the Canis in an amused tone before turnng to look upon her soon "That is Raize..he is a canis and without him its doubtful you would be here...he helped me keep ft and strong so that I could stay here and protect the tree" she answered him after a few moments thought - and it was true really, without Raize to fetch her food Etain would surely have starved as the fruit drained away her energy to grow...as it was even with the Canis' help Etain was not exactly the picture of perfect health she had been before. A few weeks of good eating once they left the tree would put things right again however and Etain was deeply thankful for the canis' help.
PostPosted: Mon Nov 30, 2009 12:43 pm

Raize gave Etain a look as though to say 'well the kid has a point' but wisely kept from actually voicing the thought, the canis had a feeling such a remark wouldn't do anything but fan the colts anger and certainly Etain wouldn't want that.

Stallions, Raize thought to himself were ntohing but trouble - disregarding the fact that he was a male of his own species Raize had seen nothing good from Nequus stallions during his life and had warned Etain of such things when she started getting friendly with the colts grey father. Well no help for it now he told himself and rose up a deep stretch before padding towards the colt."Perhaps so, mayhap you'll get the chance to tell him that someday" He told the young Nequus in passing "I'm going to hunt...will return shortly" He told Etain over his shoulder.

Etain nodded slightly as Raize left, it was she reflected somewhat odd to be friends with a predator...but Raize would never hurt her or her kind, not unless it was in defense of them anyways. Truthfully she was pretty sure it would take an entire pack of Canis to take down a Nequus - there was quite a size difference after all.

"Well it can't be helped now, I don't know what happened... maybe e'll never know and maybe we will" she told Da'Rehl with a slight nudge "But we are all three healthy and that is what is important now"

Da'Rehl watched as the Canis walked off. Yes if he ran into his father one day he would tell him that he should have been here. But he had no real idea of what he looked like other than an obvious resemblance to the pattern on his own coat. He sighed and nuzzled his mother once more, at least in her presence his anger towards his father was dulled. Though deep down he knew that anger would never go away.

"How long do we have to stay here?" He asked. The sooner he got away from this tree the better. Each time he looked at it his resentment grew a little bit more.
PostPosted: Mon Nov 30, 2009 1:17 pm

Etain thought for a few moments - how long was one required to stay at the tree? certainly the foals had no real need for it anymore and she couldn't think of any good reason why they couldn't begin to make their way out of the fruit lands at any time they wanted. She was eager to show her foals the world in any case.

"As soon as Raize come's back and your sister awakens..I guess we can go" She finally answered with a brief nod of her head.

To Da'Rehl's relief the Canis returned not too long after he had left and with his arrival his sister had woke up as well. Good they were all here and awake, now they could leave this nasty reminder behind them for good. With an anxious look at his mother they decided to leave. Da'Rehl never looked back at the tree, why should he, it only brought up bad feelings. Instead he walked forward, head held high, ears alert. And so the family left the fruitlands and headed out into the world.
