The water reminded him of his dear mother. He loved her so much and, despite the fun of adventuring on his own, missed her pretty much every day. Such was the downfall of one raised in such a smothering style.
Pale hooves clopped against the ground, leading him away from the sound of rushing water and away from the urge to seek out Kailani'ki. There were a lot of things he hadn't seen yet and he wasn't ready to stop now. He could hardly imagine returning to his mother's side with no more stories than he had left with. When he had told her of his plans to explore all the places away from the water she had never taken him, she had protested it. He couldn't return with nothing to show for leaving her alone.
He began to gain a deal of spirit at the thought of making her proud. It would be a long time, he decided, until he set hoof near water again! ...... Unless he got thirsty....

Her ears perked and she froze; in the distance, she could hear the sound of running water. At once, she realized how parched her throat was - in her hunt for berry bushes, she had forgotten to stop and get a drink of water. Shivering, she wondered what would have happened if she did collapse due to dehydration; then again, it had happened to her before... Not that history was going to repeat itself this time.
Changing her direction, Grace headed towards the sound of running water. As she neared the source of the sound, she caught sight of something orange heading in her direction. Realizing that it was another usdia, she smiled and decided that maybe she wasn't that thirsty after all. Quickening her pace, she set out to block his way; who knows? She might even make a new friend!

Despite being raised under the hooves of an overprotective female, the young stallion had come to know a few others in his lifetime. And if there was one thing his mother had taught him, it was how to be friendly. Perhaps he wasn't the best when it came to being formal and polite, but still- When the situation called for it, he could chat it up with the best of them! Or rather, he thought he would be able to...
So, when he noticed the magenta hued form moving to block his trek away from the offending water, he didn't get upset or confused, instead he slowed his pace and momentarily canted his head.
"Hello," he greeted when they were finally close enough, his hooves dragging against the grass. Now was the time to test out those people skills. Though as he stood there, one front hoof raising and being set back down, he couldn't think of anything interesting to say. Brows furrowed as his expression turned rather foolish and worried.

"Hello!" The usdia mare quickly returned the greeting with a warm smile, giving him a nod of acknowledgment as she came to a stop in front of him. When the stallion's expression changed rather abruptly, however, Grace found herself frowning as she tried to figure out what he was worrying over. However, when she noticed the way he was figeting, it soon occurred to her that he was just trying to carry the conversation beyond the initial 'hello'. Giggling softly at the discovery, she tried to continue as naturally as possible.
"My name is Grace," She offered gently, beaming at the orange usdia who seemed to be trying his best. Then, she trotted a few steps past him in the direction of the water, stopped and then turned her head to look at the stranger. Giving another smile in an attempt to make the other feel more comfortable in her presence, she spoke again, "I was on my way to have a drink... Did you just finished?"

Ears flicked forward. Was that a laugh? Another feeling of awkwardness washed over him. He hadn't meant to be so bad at this that it was funny! After her introduction, he remained silent, trying hard to understand this situation. Somehow, as he watched her, it was hard to continue to feel upset or flustered. She seemed friendly. Perhaps he had just misinterpreted her humor.
Dipping his head in thought, he was slightly surprised when she moved past him before he could reply. His neck craned around to her. A drink? Well, honestly he hadn't even thought to take a drink as he was stopped at the water's edge. He had been too bothered by himself. "No, I haven't had a drink today." He told her honestly, realizing that it might be strange to come straight from the water without doing so. And though he had just promised himself not to go there again, he began turning in the same direction as her without much contemplation.
"Oh! Uhm- And I'm Suraj."

"Well, join me for a drink then?" Grace offered with a smile as she nodded in the direction of the river. Personally, she thought it was a little suspicious that he came this way without first taking a drink, but perhaps he was just passing by? She paused, "Oh! And did you see anyone else pass by this way? All the ripe berries along the path... Well, the unmarked, worn-down path to the river had been eaten."
The sound of running water was even more obvious as she neared the source and it was refreshing just listening to the water flow! She smiled at the thought of getting some into her mouth and down her throat, and increased her pace a little. Turning to the stallion, Grace nodded, "Nice to meet you, Suraj! Are you from around here?"

"Yeah," he responded a bit quickly, moving to keep up. All in all, although he had just told himself not to return, it probably wouldn't hurt to get a drink. He could stay away even longer if his thirst was sated now. Carefully, so he wouldn't trip or something equally foolish, he turned his gaze to her as they walked. When she shifted their conversation, he raised his chin as if in thought. "No, I don't really remember seeing anyone. But if they came the same way as you, I might have seen them, so-" He assumed there had been no one else.
For him, no one else was a good thing. There was always the fear when he found himself at the water that he mother would be there. If he saw her, he thought he might be convinced to stay. So really, this whole getting a drink now idea was a good one. She hadn't been there just a few minutes earlier, so she certainly wouldn't be there now, right?
Not long after their pace quickened, he could see the water. There was a comfort in that sight, but also a strain, so when he heard her next question, he almost frowned. "Aha, yeah... I am kinda." Anywhere near water was a place he likely saw with his mother when he was a colt. "My mom raised me around the water."

"Oh, that's weird then," Grace answered with a laugh, "Maybe someone passed by earlier this week and ate them... Whoever that is, he sure have a big appetite!" She then paused, smiling fondly at the male as they made their way down to the river; the silence that hung between them was quite comfortable to her.
As the river came into view, she smiled happily, cantering up to the water's edge. Bending over, she dipped her muzzle into the water before taking in big gulps. When she finally felt satisfied, Grace straightened up again, giving a contented sigh - that felt great.
"Oh! She must enjoy the water then!" She exclaimed with a smile as she turned to look at Suraj; it is always nice to listen to others talk about their family... She never had that kind of relationship with anyone before, and it fascinates her. However, it does make her slightly envious sometimes.

For a moment, the stallion ducked within his own mind to think. Perhaps if he had made a semi-circle by accident, he had been the one to pick at all the berries. Sometime he found himself eating without thought, turning the necessary into nothing but a distraction. A faint flush came to his cheeks. He hoped that really wasn't the case. If he had stolen a possible meal from her, he felt bad. It was unlikely, yes, but he wouldn't be bringing such a thing up to her now.
As she drank, he eyed the water for a long moment. Finally, he did the same. The more water that slid down his throat, the more he realized he really had been thirsty. It was a good thing Grace had come along.
After a long, satisfying sip, her voice called his eyes to her. Pulling back only slightly, his nose still grazing the surface, he chuckled lightly. "She does." There was a contemplative silence. "Too much, maybe?" He wasn't sure. Water was so normal to him, but it seemed that most others only found the water to take a drink. "She would always walk in the water when we moved. Except when I was too little to reach the bottom."

"Too much? Can anyone really love something too much?" Grace blinked, tilting her head to a side with a curious expression. She mused out loud as she giggled softly, thinking about her own love for all sorts of berries - can she really have too much? Nodding slowly, as if still deep in thought, the usdia mare continued, "Well, I suppose too much of a good thing can be bad at times? If you eat too much for example, you might get a stomachache..."
Her voice trailed off as she smiled, "Oh? It sounds to me like she loves you more than she loves the water. She would rather keep you safe than walk in the water she loves, after all!"
