Mason was not actually at the basketball courts to play ball. Actually Mason was never at the basketball courts to play ball; he and sports didn't really mix in that way. He was, however, locked in obsessed observation of the game that was currently progressing. He knew only a little bit about basketball - well, okay, it wasn't that little. He was aware of the rules, the positions, and was vaguely aware that fouls existed, although he had no idea how to go about receiving one.

He had no idea who was playing but it was an interesting game if only because - well, that one guy, the tallest one, always scratched his elbows while he was running without a ball, and the short one - the third-shortest - was constantly brushing his hair behind his ear (nevermind that said hair was about as short as - well, as short as the shorter side of Mason's own hair). He was so engrossed in watching the game that he only would've noticed someone else appearing next to him if something had been thrown at him.

Or kicked, or something.

That something was a tap to his shoulder.

While most people sat in the bleachers to be a spectator, Remi was here for the noise. Growing up in a family that was loud and never in any state or organization, he adapted to writing his best when the world around him was hurrying along. While going to Barren Pines had been a direction into making him a better writer or at least that was how his parents felt when they were honored with the acceptance letter for their son, he wasn’t use to a place that had things like ‘quite hours’ and closed doors. Putting his Itunes on helped for those late nights when he wanted to get a chapter or two in, but when he really wanted to get in deep with a story, he had to go elsewhere for the right atmosphere.

Since the cafeteria wasn’t open yet, basketball practice was his next option. The auditorium echoed the sounds of sneakers and the dribbling ball, creating the perfect back noise for Remi to concentrate.

Even though he had other stories to write, he just couldn’t shake off the dream he had. It was tormenting him to the point that he was just working it out of his system with a new story. Thus far, he decided to go for a man who was given the chance to have good luck only if he ate a piece of flesh each week. This went from biting his finger one week, to picking off a scab another, to now starting a bar fight to bite some biker’s ear off. This would later move to digging up old corpses to skin and figuring how to get the leftovers from amputee procedures. Really, he was finding it was getting all the ick from that nightmare out of his mind at long last.

Leaning in, he tapped a boy who was sitting in front of him. “Hey kid. Do you know anything about skin? I’m wondering how long it takes for a body to dry up after it’s been buried. You know, a rough estimate. I don’t watch Discovery Health or anything, and you seem to be watching these guys with a deep interest. Thought you might know a thing or two about the human body.” He hoped the spectator was a health buff. This was Barren Pines after all. If he had any luck, the kid he just tapped could be a regular Doogie Howser.

Mason looked up as soon as he said "kid." That was always an alarm bell for the actor - someone else's name. It didn't matter whose - if it wasn't his, it had to be the name of someone interesting (though with the name kid Mason wasn't sure how anything would be interesting).

"Two or three days, give or take," bluffed the blond. "I mean, you're not exactly ingesting water..." With any luck that would sound believable - it usually did; Mason was a good liar, and he liked to sound knowledgeable. He glanced up at the other boy. "I'm actually watching to observe their funny habits though - it's something I do in my spare time." He grinned.

(it was always nice to have someone to converse with while people-watching.)

Taking his word for it, Remi jotted down the number before circling it. If anyone had picked up Remi’s notebook, they would be disturbed about his brainstorming web that centered on decapitation, skinning, a list of animals that could be eaten and easily found, and places dead people could be taken. There was also a few paragraphs he remembered from his dream that he wanted to have expressed out before he forgot it.

Not entirely distracted, he looked up at the basketball players to see what this kid was seeing. Character quirks were great for any writer, and sliding closer, he leaned in. “Funny habits, you say? Like what? All I noticed is that the kid with the unibrow should weird a pair a shorts that actually fit him.”

"Oh, yeah - " said Mason, who was eager to point this out to someone who would listen. He seemed to be unusually interested in this - even taking it so far as to write down what Mason had told him. This was Exciting. Maybe he was being interviewed or something. "I love watching people's habits. They're just so - kid with the unibrow?"

Mason searched for the kid in question - oh god that was - and quickly looked away. "I meant more, like - see that really, really tall one?" It was basketball, so Mason felt obliged to say multiple 'really's. After all, most of the players were tall. "When he's not dribbling he's always scratching his elbows." He paused, and briefly wondered why - it was enough that he did it, though, so he did not really question it. "Sometimes even while he's dribbling - I wonder how he does it!"

"I'm Mason Everhe - uh, Mason Theodore Everheat, by the way. What's your name?"

He needed to know who was interviewing him for posterity.

“Remmington Montgomery, but you can call me Remi.” Flipping a page, he wrote down scratchy elbows. “Maybe that guy has chronic dry skin.” He looked up, watching the behemoth of a teenage dribble the ball, and just as was pointed out, he scratched his elbow. You’d think the coach would try and correct such behavior, but if you weren’t really looking, it didn’t seem odd at all. Your eyes were too swept up in the movement of the ball and the hope for a basket that these little things went unnoticed.

“You just come here and watch people? Is that part of your “gift” or just a hobby?” There were many strange gifts in Barren Pines that something like this could have a very technical name and field that Remi didn’t know before. If not, at least it helped compile a list of character quirks for later characters.
