At the start of the game, cortana says she could pick any spartan and saw something in john that no one else could. Then she says "can you guess?"
Well, no i cant guess, can anyone else 'guess'?

If you listen closely to the dialog, Cortana says "Luck." A direct reference to the novals, where Dr. Halsey says that John has always had good luck on his side.
