Man, this woman was really breaking his heart over here. Unzu halfway hated that his mojo had recruited his heart in its endless battle to get laid up with some nice-looking lioness like Akinyi. It pained him that he did not even know her name, had hardly spoken to her. Perhaps that is why she had felt it right to just leave as soon as the rain stopped, abandoning him under the tree they'd gotten to know each other better under.

Still, Unzu couldn't let her break his heart, and he continued stoically on, catching waterfowl and scaring vultures off of half-eaten kills, having a boon in the season of plenty, staying out of the rain when he could. He kept his mind off of her, and he swore if he saw her again he would give her a piece of his mind, without letting her know she'd stolen a piece of his heart, of course.

See, underneath his young and douchey shell, Unzu was a self-centered douche that wanted a lovely lioness at his side for a multitude of purposes. It was a little bothersome that he was having little success in finding one, particularly one that did not make him yearn after that anonymous lioness that he'd run into a few times. So he moved on, travelling in the late afternoon as the sun set.

Akinyi was in much a similar position as Unzu, although she refused to let her believe he had had any effect on her at all. That evening, when she had returned to the tree with a freshly caught kill, the striped lioness had been crushed to find the other lion gone, the prints made in the grass by their bodies still there, as if waiting for them to return. In some twisted way, she knew he wouldn't come back as she dropped the kill, not even taking a nibble as she sat there, peering around, waiting without hope for him to come. The day passed into twilight. She laid down, still alert. Twilight passed into dark. She rested her head in her paws. It was only after dark had finally passed into light that she got up half-heartedly, leaving the meat for the buzzards and trudging off, bitter and angry and hurt.

How could he do that to her? She had left a decent trail to let him know she was not trying to run, her scent all over the grasses to the eastern side of the tree. She couldn't believe that after all that, after he had licked the mud from her fur, after he had pressed up against her, after she had... after they... no.

The lioness shook her head, steeling herself against the memory, more angry than she had been before. Shaking out her fur, she glanced up at the setting sun, seeing a flash of reflection from a nearby water hole and padded over, parched after a long, hot day. Bending down with a sigh of relief, she lapped up the cool water, feeling refreshed, but not at all satisfied, her mind also caught up with thoughts of that dark lion.

Unzu was thirsty as finished crossing a particularly large stretch of higher land, heading back down into the gullies, and stumbled upon the same watering hole as Akinyi. He didn't see her at first, heading along it to a narrower part, and as his bank became closer to her he spotted her, stepping out of the brush. He stiffened, but wouldn't let her put him off water. He went to drink opposite of her, half glaring at half ignoring her reflection in the water.

Part of him was thrilled to see her again. She looked well, still as delectable as she'd been, the season obviously good for putting some weight on her. He wanted to yell at her, but for some reason the urge was mitigated by this happiness, and he didn't say anything at all, stepping through the water as if he were going to walk past her.

At first, Akinyi thought she was imagining the reflection in the water, her tongue going still as she stared, allowing just a little ache to seep through into her heart. Oh great, now she was seeing things. Even so, she wasn't exactly surprised that it was him she was seeing. She had really trusted him. It had been so endearing, the way he had come up and laid next to her. Afterwards, he had snuggled up against her, falling asleep so sweetly she felt even her cold heart melt a little, nosing him long after before she had fallen asleep too.

But it was fake.

Sighing heavily, the lioness lifted her head to where she 'knew' he wouldn't be, her head jerking back a little as she realized he really was there. "You!" She exclaimed, straightening. The sound was a mixture of surprise and happiness, although both were overshadowed by an intense hurt and anger. All the betrayal she had felt was flooding out, and she snarled, feeling a surprising tingle of deja vu as she came barreling towards him, claws out, teeth bared. She was going to make him pay. He could he? How could he DO that? She had thought that maybe he wasn't so bad. Maybe he was just not use to being nice. She had thought maybe he ca-- no. Obviously not. That jackass would not escape with his testicles.

Lunging at him, Akinyi snarled, digging her claws into his back angrily. "How could you leave me there you p***k?! I never should have trusted you!"

"Oh s**t."

Unzu almost started to turn tail and run as Akinyi came at him again, yowling as she caught him in the back with her claws and rolling over, trying to dislodge her, letting out a pained roar and wincing, crouching down.

"ME?! You're the one that left me there sleeping, abandoning me as soon as the rain let up!" he cried, kicking out at her, thrashing in his efforts. He couldn't believe this lioness!! She was the one that was gone, he was the one that should be hurt! Who did she think she was, placing all the blame on him like this?

"I thought you'd just used me!" Unzu swiped at her, his voice tinged with hurt in spite of himself. "So don't act like *I'M* the one that left you broken-hearted!"

"I left you a god damn trail any baby with its mothers TIT in its mouth could follow!" She replied, getting in his face and shoving him onto his back, wrestling with him as he tried to shake her off, growling. "I waited all night for you to come back and you ditched me! You ditched me as soon as you got the chance just like the arrogant, pig-headed male you are!"

She was spiraling a little, but she didn't care. If she really thought about it, she would see the hilarity in the situation. She had been thinking non-stop about a male who she didn't know the name of, who had screwed her once and had left her in the cold. Now that she found him again she was angry, irrationally angry, because she knew that was how it was suppose to work. They weren't suppose to fall 'omg in luv,' they weren't suppose to become mates and live happily ever after! It was just a fling! But damn, was she angry...

"Like hell you did!" Unzu glared, throwing her off and leaping to his feet, ramming into her with his body, hurt that she was treating him this way. He'd missed her so much, thought of her so much, and she was acting like he'd done this maliciously. Her words sank in slowly, but once they did he leapt away, pulling back, fending her off.

"You... you waited for me? All night?" he asked, incredulous. "I didn't know! I thought you'd left and weren't coming back..." he frowned, stopping from fighting. Then he paused. Then he lifted his head to meet her eyes.

"I... I'm sorry..."

Akinyi skidded a little on her side as he threw her, stumbling to her feet slowly and giving him a hurt look, teeth still bared, although it started to fade as the realization started to dawn on him. And then she started to feel bad. He hadn't... meant to? He thought she had left? But... her trail... ... it could have been misinterpreted as her leaving... she hadn't even though that he might not realize.

It was her fault.

Meeting his eyes, the striped lioness approached him slowly, meekly, lowering her head and lifting it only to try to nose him gently, so gently, afraid he might snap at her, in the same way he had been afraid she might snap at him when he had pressed against her. "I should have... stayed until you woke up..." she replied, trying to organize her own thoughts, having a hard time portraying exactly what she meant, how terrible she felt, "I thought... but you..."

She stopped, looking up at him, searching his expression. "Who are you?"

Unzu watched her come up to him, his anger sapped away, shivering as she nosed him, as if he couldn't quite believe it, wondering what the reason was for him to be so hurt, when she hadn't abandoned him at all. He pressed against her, resting his head on her shoulder, licking the fur.

"My name is Unzu," he told her, purring, his tail giving a hopeful twitch. "And I am so glad to hear that you didn't mean it," he rested his cheek against hers, closing his eyes.

Gods, but he still wanted to hold onto his anger, but he couldn't, not with her looking so pretty and vulnerable, and he sat with her. "Who are you, so I don't lose you again?"

She relaxed as she felt the other lion shiver, feeling the tension ebb as he pressed against her a little, the weight of his head on her shoulder oh-so-welcome, that tongue against her fur only further lifting her spirits. So he hadn't left her. It was such a relief, a weight she hadn't known she had been harboring, all her anger and disappointment dissipating again. Butterflies seemed to flutter in her stomach at his words... he was so glad to hear it? She licked his cheek, rubbing up against him in a strange, unusual display of affection, pulling away only as he sat down.

"Akinyi," She replied, staring up at him, expression not even guarded, "Does this mean... you don't want to lose me?"

She didn't dare to hope. She couldn't assume anything by that, although it was so hard not to. She couldn't think of anything else he could have meant besides that...

Unzu watched her sit back, that expression on her face so cute, so amazed, he couldn't possibly lie or be cruel to that face. He pressed his nose against hers. "Of course not, Akinyi," he told her, closing his eyes. "Man, you were such an annoying female, but that one day I really thought we had something. It was just shocking to wake up alone," Unzu admitted.

"I'd really like to travel with you, at least for the season. I'm on my own right now and it's just not right for me to be without a woman of your caliber," he winked, back to his douchey teasing self, leaning his shoulder against her, pushing his luck a little bit, but he was happy so he did not care.

"You were such a p***k of a male," She replied, frowning a little as she remembered all the stupid things he had done. Now, however, the seemed more endearing than they did dickish, and she felt a little guilty for playing the shrew all those times. "... but I really did wait all night for you to come back."

Listening to him quietly, Akinyi pretended to think it over, forcing herself to look angry, and she growled, shoving him onto the dirt, pinning him there with her paws. "How dare you even think you're not coming with me?" she replied, collapsing on top of him, her nose pressed against his chest-fur.

He didn't even raise his hackles when she called him a p***k of a male, although he felt a little annoyance, he could forgive it all because it was Akinyi, beautiful and wonderful Akinyi who had not really left him at all, he was just being silly. Unzu did startle when she shoved him down, then relaxed under her as he realized what she meant, rolling onto his side and snuggling with her, relieved.

"Man.. we're both stupid," he laughed, resting his head against hers. "We could have avoided all this." But he didn't really mind as they got along well, and he knew now that this would be his best rainy season yet. He didn't even have to spend it alone.

The shrew was tamed.
