I've heard many different versions of the way in which humans catch the 'wolf gene. I heard it's passed along by a bite, through your family genes and that it is also a mutation seen very rarely.
As well as their transformation from human to 'wolf. There's one story that says it only happens during a full moon, another says they can change at will, and some say that it is like a demon living inside of you, once angered it lashes out and causes a painful metamorphosis of the human body.
Just a few things I thought I'd post seeing as I was in the neighbourhood.

There is an ancient Cherokee (Native American Indian tribe) who believed in skinwalkers. This is another myth about werewolves. Shamans or "witches" would don the skin of an animal and through a complex magical ritual would become bound to the animal in soul and mind and at will changing into the beast fully. Some myths speak of them being respected in the tribe while others say they were hated or exiled.
