In some myths Mermaids are just playful creatures, but in others, they are horrible creatures that want to drown men, and women who are prettier than they are.

The ones about drowing people, yeah, they're sirens, people often mistake the two because they both have fish tails, though sirens can really be half of any animal, just that the fish-tailed ones are more common in ancients myths. And un-like mermaids the Siren's can change from animal to half-animal to human, at will. Though some myths suggest that, kind of like the werewolf, they only change at night into their animal forms.

As for mermaids, they frankly can be nasty at times but most often than not they're not, though I think it would be ten times more interesting if they were all nasty. Sirens, they'd hold my attention far longer than any mer-person would.

Also both seem to always be described as very beautiful, the only difference is that the sirens always have beautiful melodic voices that draw people to them so that they can drown them.

Greed is for amateurs.

In the book Peter and the Starcatchers by Barry and Pearson as well as in the other Peter Pan movies, Mermaids were as Strawberry described them: Jealous and wicked. More jealous than wicked, but as Peter stated "They'd pleasantly drown you."
Disorder, chaos, anarchy: now that's FUN!

Well I'm pretty sure they probably got the two mixed up, many often do that I find.

Well the mermaids in Harry Potter, Peter Pan and in The Little Mermaid all all quite different.

Harry Potter - Are ugly and testy things, they live in the Black Lake. You don't really know much about them, besides they can only sing beautifuly under water and can't sing on land.

Peter Pan - Obsesively jealous creatures. They would drown any pretty girl that comes near them. They just can't handle the competition.

Little Mermaid - Beautiful voices in and out of the water, they live in a beautiful city of Atlantica and love music. Singing and dancing. They are very friendly creatures, but they don't go up on the surface much and they try to avoid humans

Mermaids are usually described as friendly creatures in kids stories. But the older (for kids) the stories get, mermaids get evil. :O
