The weather seemed to have darkened to match Unzu's mood, roiling stormclouds bringing blessed rain in from the oceans moving overhead, small patches of sunlight breaking through piercing the sub-cloudular gloom and lighting his way as he meandered through the swamp far below. The rains were good for the land, but it made the prey harder to catch. And Unzu didn't really like it, to be honest. He was moving a little faster than his usual swing-low lope, searching for a place to bide the storm before it broke over him.

Then, inevitably, a peal of thunder shook the swamp and the storm broke, rain thundering down, beating onto his back like tiny fists, and he broke into a full run for the nearest tree, this one thick with succulent growth and waxy leaves, perfect for protecting an occupant from the rain. He skidded under it, shaking himself off and groaning, sitting down to rest after his sprint over here.

She had been wandering the roguelands when the thunderclouds had started to approach, one by one. She had paid them little mind. She would find shelter before the rains came. It was not until she saw the lines of rain in the distance that she realized she was going to be stuck in it. No. No no no.

She took off.

Akinyi didn't mind getting wet. Swimming was not something that she hated to do -- there were times when the water was nice and cooling, especially on a hot day. Pounding rain and gusts of wind, however, were a different matter completely. Rain soaked you completely through, chilling you to the bone, with no chance for the warm sun to dry and warm you. If there was wind, and there usually was, it was all the worse, the cold seeping through your fur so no matter what you did you were cold and shivering.

The thunder struck the earth, a loud boom echoing not a few moments later. Akinyi's steps were faster now, the rain already soaking her through, fur sticking to her body as she ran, mud sloshing up to coat her paws and underbelly, only to be washed away by the pounding rain once more. The sight of the tree was a blessing, and she took off without hesitation towards it, panting as she finally came to rest underneath it's branches. She had seen the other male only within the last few feet, recognizing him by those stripes almost instantly, but she was too wet and cold to care.

Unzu stiffened immediately when Akinyi joined him under the tree. He'd recognize that fur anywhere. His emotional wounds still hadn't healed after his last encounter with her, he was quite unhappy to be in her presence again. Still, though mojo wasn't winning against brain, Unzu felt a little sympathetic to her plight and laid down in the soft earth, not saying anything to her and letting himself dry off and rest, staring out at the rain bewteen the overhanging branches, the brush so tight around it that the space was basically dry.

He didn't even glance at her, seemingly occupied by his own thoughts, dripping into the soil, shivering a little in the cold as his soaked mane laid thickly against his neck, rivulets of water running off of his body. Akinyi might as well have been a rock for all that he acknowledged her.

The orange and cream lioness could practically feel the tension rise a little as Unzu kept his back to her, her own blue eyes glancing at him once, quickly, roaming over his form before turning away. She didn't want to be caught looking at him, not after their little quips back and forth last time.

Laying down in the grass, Akinyi shivered, curling up tightly, trying to use the grass to shield her from the wind. It didn't work, of course, the yellow and pale green blades bending under the wind's force, causing her to tighten up again. It was times like this that she wished she really did have a mate to curl up against, to share body heat with and break the wind with. Either that or a cave. Or an overhanging rock. Unfortunately, all she had was this tree, with Unzu underneath it, his own mood seeming to fit hers quite well.

"Sorry. I stole your tree," She murmured half-heartedly, the cold taking out the bite that could have possibly been there, had circumstances been different. She was cold and wet and unhappy and she just could not summon enough energy to be a b***h right now.

Unzu didn't answer her, though he did glance at her sidelong, observing that she was as cold and wet as he. He kept his back turned for a long moment, considering. The wind pierced him through to the bone and he shuddered, finally coming to a decision as he felt the cold sapping his strength, grunting as he stood up, going over to sit with Akinyi, cautious, laying at her back.

For a long moment he didn't do anything, just lay there not looking at her. Then he leaned against her a little.

His expression unchanging, he acted as if the most fascinating thing in the world right now was the rain, pounding down, filling the swamps higher, keeping the grass, and thus, the herds happy. The unfortunate side-effects were necessary evils.

Akinyi heard the other lion get up, although she didn't move from where she was huddled, burrowing her nose under her paws. She didn't care if he was there or not. It was too cold to care. He could have said anything he wanted at that moment, and she wouldn't have responded, acting just as much like the rock as he pretended she was. The feeling of another warm body near hers caused her to look up, startled, glancing at the small space between them as it disappeared, dark fur pressed against hers, meshing pleasantly with the orange of hers. And suddenly she wasn't as cold. The bite of the wind lessened, and although she was still wet, she felt a little better.

Lifting her eyes to the other lion's face, she eyed him a little despite how he stared off into the rain, as if she too were trying to make a decision. After a long, pregnant silence, with only the rain and thunder breaking it, she shifted a little against him, turning over so she was pressed flush against his body, trying to shield him from the wind as well.

Unzu glanced down at her as she shifted against him, feeling mildly accomplished, and then looked back out at the rain. She was even more soaked than he had been, and had obviously been through some mud to get here. He remembered his mother sponging moisture out of his fur with her tongue, and how comforting it had been to him. He paused, considering the lioness beside him.

Then he leaned his head over, starting to lick her shoulder dry, flicking his ears back like he expected to be bitten, his fail flickering a little hopefully as he pressed forward, taking his chance as he saw it. He wasn't sure if he'd get attacked for his seeming act of charity, but he continued anyway, the world was for the bold.

The tongue against her shoulder was readily accepted, muscles relaxing a little as the soothing motion of his tongue against her fur, calming her. Perhaps he wasn't as bad as she had thought. For once, she didn't think he had an ulterior motive, although he sure as hell could have. It just didn't feel that way, as the rain poured around them, keeping them under that tree. Perhaps it was sympathy. Perhaps it was a silent apology. She really didn't care which it was -- it felt good, it felt warm, and she it was making her feel a little more... accepting... if he was interested in other things.

Leaning up, she licked a droplet of water from his ear as she began to purr contentedly.

Unzu continued licking, encouraged when she didn't immediately bite him, enjoying the shared warmth of their bodies and having her not flinch away at his approach. The dark lion had never really had a mate, just the odd romp in the savannah, and it was still thrilling to the young adult now. More often than not he was being chased off for some reason, sometimes the pride members just didn't like his face. He was kind of a douche. So to have her leaned against him, actually answering his advances, was kind of amazing to him.

He paused when she started to lean up, feeling his heart thud as she licked his ear, blinking at her as she purred, and he put his tongue away, answering her purr, eyes half-lidded, his voice rumbling much lower than hers as they relaxed there. It was going so well, such good signs! Surely something had to go wrong sooner or later. Unzu decided not to push his luck, giving her one final lick along the neck before he rested his head on her, flicking his tail, resting there with her and waiting out the storm.

"How's it been?" he asked softly, almost too soft to hear over the rain and occassional thunder beyond their place under the tree.

She felt a little embarrassed as Unzu stopped, looking up at her like that, and she tilted her head away, looking out at the storm as if nothing had happened, although she didn't move from where she lay next to him. She had never really been with a male before, not even as a romp, although her body was telling her she should be. The fact that she was mostly a b***h was the main reason for it all -- no one really cared to get too close to a lioness more willing to bite your head off than let you within ten feet of her.

Letting him lean against her, she continued to lick him, licking the fur along the back of his neck. "It's been," she replied after a few moments of relative quiet, finally stopping the tongue bath, resting her tail on top of his.

"Why are you even talking?" She replied back, "Don't you know when a girl is propositioning you?"

Unzu purred as she licked at him, arching his neck, quite pleased to lay there for a while and chill, then started when she started to speak, looking at her, watching her beside him. He quirked an eyebrow when he felt her tail on top of his, blinking at her, not sure if he should dare to believe what she was saying. He gaped at her for a moment, not moving, stock-still.

The dark lion wasn't so stupid that he'd just sit there when she was making such an obvious innuendo, and suddenly Unzu felt very glad for the rain and this chance meeting, even if she was awful and had put him in such a foul mood. He jumped at her offer, and waiting out the rest of the storm wasn't going to be so boring and depressing.

~~~
The rain had just begun to stop, turning from a downpour to a light drizzle to just a few drops dripping from the inside of the leaves of the tree, the heat of the day washed away by the cold rain. The day was getting older, the sun three fourths of the way through the sky -- they had spent quite a bit of time under the tree. Although the rain had been good for the land, it had left the land quiet and damp, nothing wanting to move after being soaked for so long.
Akinyi had been dozing against Unzu's side, her head resting on his shoulder as her blue eyes slowly opened, looking around blearily. Since the rain had stopped, it was probably a good idea to go get some food -- she was hungry again, and perhaps the dark lion would appreciate the gesture. Sitting up, she yawned widely and shook herself off, pushing herself to her paws and stepping out into the sunlight. The day was more than half over now, but there was still plenty of time to catch something before dark.
Giving one last glance at the other lion, she padded off in one direction, sniffing the air every once in a while, hoping to find something to feed their hunger.
Unzu felt wrapped in warmth, as comfortable as if he were curled up against his very mother's bosom, and having a most pleasant dream that his mother and aunts had taken down a very large wildebeest and were offering him the heart. He rolled over, and was surprised awake by Akinyi's absence, blinking and looking around hazily. He felt awareness returning and stretched, looking around for Akinyi, amused.
"Hey, where'd you go?" he asked aloud, before it occurred to him that she might have left as he slept, abandoning him. Wow, he felt so used. Was this a wham, bam, thank you ma'am? Unzu frowned, standing stock-still.
Well, fine! He could play this game too. He wouldn't let her get to HIM. With a snort, the dark lion stalked off in the opposite direction into the swamps, disheartened, pointedly not following the trail she'd left out into the soaked savannah.
