exclaim What I like the most about his COLOURING is how he expresses jeans Oh, god, they're gorgeous!. Just look at Hikaru's jeans... And oh, look! Look at L's jeans... Pretty, pretty. Let's zoom in on L's butt. Admire the texture...the blue-greeness...the folds... 4laugh exclaim Another thing that I adore is Obata's SLEEK black hair. Isumi and Akira both have such black SLEEK hair here... Of course, Waya's got red spikey hair, but I couldn't bear to cut him out. (..you can see a bit of Hikaru's clothes at the right. Yeah, HE was cut surprised )

Does anyone know the colouring method used by Obata?
Not that it'll help me or anything, but I'd like to know.

Anothello Does anyone know the colouring method used by Obata? Not that it'll help me or anything, but I'd like to know. Actually, Hotta Yumi did a short interview with him on his drawings and he mentions that he uses a wide range of Copic markers (I believe). The full interview can be read here: http://www.brainfart.org/hikago/18interview.htmlAs for my opinion on Obata Takeshi himself, I have always loved his artwork. He's my favorite manga artist. In fact I did a report on him for my art history class ("Theory and Criticism" to be precise) last year on the way he uses his artwork more than just for pretty drawings, but how it really enhances the story, using 3 chapters from book 15 as examples. I felt kind of bad about spoilers, but, well, no one in my class would ever read it and I did warn them (which made them laugh, heh). But I totally agree with the Anothello on the jeans! I love the way he does clothing in general, but his pants/jeans just look so... awesome (that sounds kind of weird typed out xd ). But it's his black and white pictures that impress me the most. His use of negative space and atmosphere are purely genius. Gah, I could gush all day... but I won't........

I love his art, it really adds depth to the story.
I just got Deathnote (another series he drew)! The art was the major reason I bought it but it has a good story too.Jyuichi

As far as Death Note is concerned, I really like his use of symbols when drawing pictures of Light especially. For example, in this pic:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v281/Gwydion/Obata-sensei/DN49.jpg
(I apologize if it looks all pixely.... it looked fine on my computer at that size, but for some reason when I uploaded it it just looked horrible. Ah well.)
The pose with the outstretched arms and the rays of light behind him make him look almost god-like, which is what he is basicly acting like. There's even a picture of a woman who looks like she could be the virgin Mary. But yet if you look right next to her, the red and black section is a pile of skulls. It gives a small glimpse of what his actions are actually leading to - not life, but death. Then of course the fact that everyone else is behind him, and he's looking straight out, as if they aren't worthy of his greatness. He's even wearing white clothing, a typical "good guy" look, rather than black. Everything makes him look so good, and yet the skulls revel his true nature.
It may not be my favorite picture, but it always makes me squee like the Obata fangirl I am. sweatdrop

Hm..do you think there is anything to the Death Note's logo? (The way death note's written....sideways backwards)

I like his artwork. I'm hoping to read Death Note soon and have already started Hikaru No Go. Also, I was surprised at first, but I like the way that he made Sai look like a woman.
