Cannogakure - Village Hidden in the Winds

Cannogakure is the newest of the village available out there for the prospective ninja character, having existed only a scant 6 months as a roleplay, but one that already offers a unique roleplay experience in a tight, well moderated community.

Cannogakure has evolved as a Nomadic Village. Unlike Konoha, Suna, and even Getsu it has no fixed location. This means that at any particular month we can be interacting with a new village as our close neighbors as the Great Herd passes by the various lands.

And it is this Nomadic nature which sets Cannogakure apart. As a ninja you may find this village a strange place, unlike the other locations in the setting that you are more intimately familiar with. In their travels Cannogakure has become something more metropolitan than other villages, absorbing the best of the cultures and traditions they visit into the fabric of thier very core.

Cannogakure is also very close knit and clannish. Strong ties exist among the herd, and these play a large role in helping to determine not only the fate of the village, but also the fate of your character.

Cannogakure is a hard village, with a hard road ahead of them. This is not the place for the happy go lucky carefree bubblegum optimist. Cannogakure Ninja are grim survivalists, hunters, gatherers, and defenders of the herd against the horrors in the uncivilized lands they travel. If you choose to go down this road, expect hard times but great rewards.

Cannogakure - The Village Itself

As stated above Cannogakure is not like other villages. It is nomadic. Rather than traveling in modular buildings of some sort, easily collapsed and remade into crude camp sites the Cannogakure Herd moves as a whole, with its homes, businesses, academies and government intact.

How does it do this you may ask?

The village of Cannogakure is built on the backs of large beasts that the Tam Clan of Cannogakure has tamed called "Leviathans". These Leviathans are repitilian creatures that live for approximately 100 years, growing from thier hatchling size comparable to that of a large dog, until they get to thier elder status. The largest of thier elders more than 420 yards from head to tail, 120 wide at both shoulders, and lifted 60 feet off the ground.

These creatures support the infrastruction of Cannogakure. Platforms, harnesses, and braces are rigged up to allow the villagers to build relatively conventional structures upon the backs of these beasts. As a beast gets older and larger newer structures are added, resulting in the eldest Leviathans being a tightly built mass of homes, businesses, storage warehouses, obsolete buildings, and abandoned structures.

The Cannogakure Herd consists at this time of the following Leviathans:

Elder Leviathans:

Reaver Academy Leviathan, housing the main ninja academy of the village where all shinobi of the village are trained. It is the oldest Leviathan in the herd, approaching the end of its life.

Halcyon Leviathan: The home of the ruling class elite of Cannogakure, including its leader Rastai Kaan Staal, and his viceroy Walker Tam. It is here that the business of government takes place as well.

Unnamed Leviathans (3): Currently these are open for reference in a character's profile, and most likely will be the homes and workplaces of any Cannogakure Citizens. These will be named as characters reference them and they get play.

Mature Leviathans: Smaller than Elder Leviathans, most Mature Leviathans are between 40 and 70 years old, are still quite large creatures and have been heavily built upon but not overbuilt.

Shinsei Academy Leviathans (4): Special Leviathans which have been given to the Myoko Clan. There they have thier Shinsei Scout school, which produces the Elite ninja of Cannogakure's Myoko Clan. These Leviathans are also at the forefront of the herd, a traditional role for them as trail blazers and pacificers of the dangerous frontier.

Nikolia Trading Post Leviathan: Completely given over to commerce with the outside world. The Nikolia Trading Post Leviathan is run by the Nagato Clan and thier interests. No one lives upon this creature's back, nor does it have the usual structures associated with its younger lifestyle.

Other Mature Leviathans (7): Mature Leviathans tend to be more purpose built than Elder ones generally are. As such some of these Leviathans are given over to one sort of activity or another, manufacturing space, storehouses, residential, etc. Most still bear marks of thier time as Young Leviathans however. These Leviathans will be named and written up as referenced in the roleplay.

Young Leviathans (20): Young Leviathans tend to serve one purpose, and one purpose only in Cannogakure. This is that of the so called "Siege Leviathan". These Leviathans serve as the sentries, walls, and fallout shelters of Cannogakure. During this young age of 13 to 40 a Leviathan recieves the first structures built upon its back. These tend to be barbettes and towers for lookouts and general defense. As it grows more buildings are added. Bunkers that civilians can be evacuated to in case of an emergency, small weapon depots to arm those who live and work upon the Leviathans, some of the unique inventions of the Nagato Clan and Staal Clan. combined with the relatively spry nature of the large, barely burdened beast and it's natural toughness makes these creatures a mobile fort in and of themselves. As usual these will be named and referenced as it comes up in the roleplay, if it does.

The Cannogakure Herd is situated so that the Shinsei Academy Leviathans are always pointed in the direction that the herd is traveling, taking point in advance of the rest of the herd. Behind them, outside of the "village proper" is usually found the Nikolia Trading Post Leviathan anytime the village is not moving, in order to let outsiders trade without penetrating deep into the village.

Normally whether parked or on the move, the village is surrounded by a ring of its Seige Leviathans, acting as a mobile wall to keep that which does not belong out, or at least under careful watch. Behind that screen are the Mature Leviathans, and dead center of the pack is the Elder Leviathans of Cannogakure, usually taking one at each of the four cardinal points while the Reaver Academy is dead center.

They keep to this formation at all times. The Leviathans themselves are amphibious, capable of traveling over waters or land in order to keep this formation in thier grand migration.

Cannogakure - History, Key Figures and Events

Cannogakure's early history is shrouded in myth and legend. What few scrolls remain from this early period in the Herd's history are locked away in the most restricted levels of the village's vaults. What is taught to those within the village is a confusing tapestry of conflicting

First Lord of Cannogakure?

There are two legends taught within Cannogakure relating to the start of the village, and the so called First Lord of the Herd. Near as most can figure the Herd had formed 600 years ago, when the first of the Leviathans were hatched and tamed for use by the ninja who were Cannogakure's forefathers.

One legend speaks of the great sorcerer Hibaki Tam, First Lord of Cannogakure who discovered the special techniques and binding jutsu seals to tame the hatchlings as they came from the eggs. He gathered together a group of like minded, talented shinobi whom he taught his techniques to. He is protrayed as a dark figure, who used immoral forbidden jutsus to take control over his rivals and cement his hold over the Cannogakure Herd.

Regardless of his reputation as a tyrant and criminal, he penned the Book of Tam, a massive set of scrolls mostly lost to time which not only detailed his forbidden arts, but also his methods for taming and training the Leviathans as well as penning down the early laws of Cannogakure, even detailing the methods by which the nomadic village should travel.

The second legend speaks of the daring warrior Ulric Staal. Legend tells of his great reputation as a slayer of beasts in this wilder time when demons and monsters still commonly roamed the world. For whatever reason lost to time, he found himself set upon a task, to steal a clutch of eggs from an elder Leviathan. In a daring assault he managed to slay the mother beast and secure the eggs. He watched them hatch, letting the young Leviathans key upon him as thier mother. With this herd of hatchling leviathans he travelled the world, using his fearsome reputation and the power the Leviathans gave him to gather together a village.

He led this small clan upon a bloody campaign of looting and pillaging in these lawless times, glutting himself on stolen riches. Cannogakure grew rich and powerful, but also feared. Several clans put aside thier differences to confront this powerful threat. And through trickery and deceit managed to overcome Ulric Staal and his men. The First Lord of Cannogakure was forced to flee the lands with what little he had left. He took to the wilderness, vowing to make his people strong and return to take that which rightfully belonged to him. (Nearly everything, in his mind)

Granted, the legends themselves have details which cannot be accounted for in this short space, and the nuiances of it have taken up the efforts of generations of historians and philosophers.

For many generations after this early founding, Cannogakure found itself traveling the distant lands from its origins. This resulted in a very strange culture compared to other ninja villages, heavily influenced by ideas and contact with lands that the average shinobi has not even imagined. This was most easily represented in Cannogakure by its strange political systems, and the very militaristic nature of its people. During this first leg of its Grand Journey Cannogakure's Clans rose to power, as did the Leviathan State, with each seperate leviathan of the herd becoming almost a city unto itself, with its own microcosm and culture, which in some cases was radically different from other Leviathans.

During this time two Clans rose to power within the village, each claiming status as the true Lords of Cannogakure, those who descended from Ulric Staal, and those who were considered clanmates of Hibaki Tam. A strange balance of power was developing, with the Tams becoming the law givers and judges, the Staals warband leaders and executioners. At various points during this age Tams ruled Cannogakure as its Lord, at others the Staals had complete control over the village. Infighting was horrendously bloody. It is believed at this time that each Clan as seperated upon its own Leviathan, for the most part. And that the resulting bloodshed lead to the mingling of clans throughout the herd, so that they would identify with other clans as Leviathan-mates, rather than as rivals for power.

With this new stability a new figure rose to power in Cannogakure. The Sorcerer Hiten, a shinobi of frightening power. He mastered jutsus that the Tam Family had passed down from generations, supposedly from the Book of Tam and Hibaki Tam's personal notes. These jutsus were so repugnant to all morality and humanity that only by his sheer power did Hiten keep control over the Herd. In his hubris he lead Cannogakure into a conflict with a nearby nation, launching a devestating campaign which nearly led Cannogakure to destruction. In the end a team of enemy shinobi assassinated Hiten, bringing a swift end to a war that no one within Cannogakure wanted in the first place.

His legacy is such that the darkness he brought has forever tarnished the Tam Family. Once a major power within Cannogakure politics they are now mostly left out of power, shown only token respect and isolated from the rest of Cannogakure society. Most believe if not for thier jealous guarding of the Leviathan Taming Jutsus that the clan would have been eradicated wholesale soon after Hiten's fall.

Once more Cannogakure exiled itself from the lands of ninja to lick its wounds. With the Tam Family cast down the Staals gained complete control over the herd. It was in this dark time of rebuilding and fear that another Tam would rise up that the Myoko Clan was established. The Elite Forces of Cannogakure they were trained to be completely loyal to the good of the herd above all else, above thier Leviathan, above thier leaders, above thier comrades. They became a fearsome secret police and first line of defense for the village, determined to root out the corruption and bar the village from dark paths.

Legend has it that the Myoko Clan was formed from only the best, and most stalwart of the Staal Clan. What relation might or might not exist cannot be proved. And it is somewhat doubtful as the Staal bloodline has never appeared in the Myoko Clan. However the Staals continue to let the rumor exist due to the loyalty it breeds in the Myoko Clan.

The last of the Great Clans, is not really a clan at all. As Cannogakure shifted from being a militaristic power to having a stronger economic base, a new group was finding itself in power. Merchants and craftsmen of Cannogakure had constant contact with the outside world. They were fascinated by the idea of trade unions and guilds, forming the "Nagato Clan", a group drawn not together by blood and family but by a common desire for commerce as part of Cannogakure's growing mercantile faction. This open membership has lead to a meteoric rise in power and influence, with a vastly disproportionate amount of Cannogakure's wealth in the hands of the Nagato Clan. They chaff however under the Staal's rule, as thier more militaristic background demands the Nagato Clan sell thier best crafted weapons and equipment at barely above cost only to the village armories. They limit contact and trade with outsiders, afraid of the shift that even the dullest of thier leaders can see happening with each rise in Nagato membership. It's legacy as a militaristic group is fading as they far a future with Cannogakure as soft merchant gentlemen, ripe for conquest by outsiders.

In recent history the Tam Family has started to come back into power. While the village is still ruled by Lord Rastai Kaan Staal, Walker Tam has the Lord's ear, and often the tasks Lord Rastai finds less interesting, including day to day minutae, is handled directly by Walker Tam. Rumors abound of him becoming another Hiten, of him finding and practicing the dark jutsus that his sorcerer forefathers practiced.

This fear has become more real as the Herd found itself drawing closer to shinobi lands again. Never before has Cannogakure not been at war when it walked through there. However there seems no intention of violence, at least not from Cannogakure yet. The leaders of the clans are at odds, seldom able to agree upon the correct course for the Cannogakure Herd. Shortages of shinobi, of weapons and arms, and supplies lead them in an increasingly urgent search for new salvage and trade opportunities lest they die out.

Cannogakure - The Staal Clan

The Staal Clan are the warriors of Cannogakure. They are seperated from the rest of the militaristic herd by thier zeal, discipline, and focus.

With a long history and a bloodline tracing back to the very earliest days of the Cannogakure Village the average member of the Staal Clan views themselves as the rightful rulers of Cannogakure. They recognize a long history of military leaders and champion shinobi which merely reinforces thier attitude that they are ment to lead, and others are ment to follow.

Like the other major clans members of the Staal Clan are spread throughout the Leviathans, with a few found on each. In times of crisis these Staal Shinobi are often pressed to lead the defense of thier home, rallying the other citizens and taking command. They are typically given responsiblility for training the average citizen in rudimentry warrior arts, so that no member of the Cannogakure Herd is helpless in times of crisis. As well the most senior Staal ninja upon a Leviathan is appointed "Leviathan Champion", a role in which that shinobi acts as the Leviathan's representative in village wide business. The Leviathan Champion stems from an old tradition where desputes between members of two different Leviathans would be solved through a trial of combat, with the Champions of each Leviathan representing thier citizens. While such a practice is rare in recent years, the rules for such trials still exist and theoretically could be called into use at any time.

Most shinobi squads are led by Staal Clan ninja. While there is no rule which states this as a standard deployment, Staal Clan ninja often recieve additional leadership training from thier families which make them prime canidates for leaders.

The Staal Clan shinobi are often gifted specialized items designed to work with thier jutsus, and it's not uncommon to see masterfully crafted pieces being passed down throughout the generations as both treasured heirlooms AND weapons of war to use.

Staal Clan Bloodline

The Staal Clan have a strongly manifesting bloodline which they trace all the way back to Ulric Staal. Never has a person been born with even just one Staal parent who did not have it, and often even grandchildren only one quarter Staal still manifested the ability.

The Staal Clan bloodline manifests as an unusual elemental affinity. These ninja have a unique trait for manipulating the Metal Element and the Metal Jutsus that they have developed over a long Clan history. Thier metal elemental jutsus are strong against Water and Wind, but weak against Fire abilities.

Staal Clan Special Jutsus

The following are just a few of the jutsus that young Staal Clan warriors are trained in. While it is not guaranteed that a Staal ninja would necessarily know these jutsus, let them be a guideline for creating your first jutsus.

Iron Scarf
Level: Genin
Type: Ninjutsu
Requires a Staal Clan Scarf or similiar item. Using this jutsu the metallic threads woven through a long piece of cloth are manipulated by the shinobi. This turns what is essentially a ribbon into a tough, rigid length used for lashing a target at medium ranges. With low chakra control all a Staal Clan shinobi can do is straighten and harden the scarf for bludgeoning or thrusting snaps, a more talented shinobi can manipulate the scarf with this jutsu, making it dance in complex battle patterns.

Tensen
Level: Geinin
Type: Ninjutsu
Requires a Staal Clan Fan or similiar item. Using this jutsu a Staal Clan shinobi runs his chakra into metalic rods inserted into what appears to be a paper fan. The metal spreads through the fan, turning it into a stout shield and sharp slashing weapon with sharp points upon the end. A favored weapon of Staal Clan women as it's easily concealed in polite society.

Golden Fever
Level: Genin
Type: Genjutsu
The shinobi in question takes a small bit of gold dust out, blowing it into the winds from the palm of his hand as he activates the jutsu. His chakra is manifested in the golden flakes in the air, showing as a bright, dazzling light within a cone extending 5 feet in the direction he blew the dust. Those who view the light risk having the Genjutsu enter thier senses. Thier sight is given a golden hue which washes out color and shades, making it VERY hard for them to make out figures (They still can, but without shade or color it's quite hard). This jutsu tends to infect the target for at most 2 minutes, of course depending on the enemy's skill in using and breaking genjutsu.

Flowstone Strike
Level: Genin
Type: Taijutsu
Requires metallic gauntlets or bracers. When used a Staal shinobi unleashes his physical energy during brute physical strikes. This energy is released through his metallic gauntlets/bracers, warping them crudely into long spikes that lash out towards the enemy, effectively turning your protection into crude claws (Suffice to say such items are warped so severly while using this that any protective value they had before is lost). Using this jutsu may irrevocably damage your item. The Flowstone Strike technique can be used in reverse by those talented in chakra control to return the claw into roughly its former form.

Staal Clan Character Requirements

To create a Staal Clan Character, the following is required:

One, as per Cannogakure Standards, you need to add a "Long Term Goals" section to your character profile. As well you must start as an Academy Student if you are new to Cannogakure.

Two, while within the Academy you will need to take an extra course on Leadership and Staal Clan Jutsus beyond the normal course ciriculum before you can graduate the Genin status.

Three, you must have at least one Ancestrial Staal Clan item. This will most likely be a weapon or a piece of armor. Such a piece MUST be described in detail on your character profile. Such a piece must also be approved by me.

Cannogakure - The Tam Clan

The Tam Clan are the judges and wise men of Cannogakure. Tam Clan ninja tend to be analytical, with a long view of the world and an eye towards both the past and future.

The Tam Family is as ancient within Cannogakure as the Staals, however due to the irredemible, or nearly so, black mark that is Hiten they tend to downplay thier history and role in Cannogakure's leadership. Most Tams view themselves as martyrs, tolerated only because of thier abilities to raise and train the Leviathans. While this attitude was true in the wake of Hiten's reign, outside of some radicals most have long since forgotten about the darkness of his name.

The Tam Clan has always been small, and still is to this day. Upon most Leviathans there is seldom more than 3 members of the clan. Usually these three find most of thier time taken up in the care of the Leviathan, however they are also known to take the role of Judge, a counterpart to the Leviathan Champion of the Staal Clan. Judges are given responsibility for Internal Affairs within the Leviathan. Not only do they often take a hand in writing the laws of the village and thier particular Leviathan and hearing disputes and handing down rulings, but also a more active role in apprehending criminals among the village. Technically Judges are only supposed to assert thier authority upon thier Leviathan, and only upon Cannogakure citizens, though sometimes these regulations are forgotten.

Tam Clan ninja rarely venture far from Cannogakure. There is no Law preventing them from taking trips outside of the herd, but as most Tam Family shinobi are busy taking care of Leviathans, or handing out justice upon thier homes, there is seldom call for them to travel. Those that do often take thier scholarly natures to the road, recording vast books of thier experiences and how it may be adopted into the village when they return.

To be a Tam Clan Shinobi is to be linked to the most vile traitor ever known to Cannogakure, and the demonic tyrant who almost led to thier destruction. It is to carry a black mark upon your soul, but knowing that you MUST soldier on. For the herd cannot exist without your people. Your people would have no history, no sense of self. They would have no laws, no justice.

In times past, the Tam Clan had access to forbidden ninja arts, jutsus so vile and repugnant to assault the sensibilities and senses of all but the darkest souls. Rumors persist that the Book of Tam, and its dark secrets still exist, hidden away in some family's personal vault. Perhaps this Book is the dark secret you bear, and the reason why you rightly fear the suspicions and persecution of those around you.

Tam Clan Speciality

The Tam Clan have always been the tamers and trainers of the Leviathans of Cannogakure. Even now, so far from its humble beginnings this is still the case.

Most members of the Tam Clan take up thier ancestrial role as trainers of the great beasts, focusing thier ninja arts on raising and acting in concert with the Leviathans.

Tam Clan Special Jutsus

The following are just a few of the jutsus that a young Tam Clan sage are trained in. While it is not guaranteed that a Tam Clan shinobi would necessarily know these jutsus (Especially if they eschew the traditional path), let them be a guideline for creating new jutsus.

Target Illumination
Level: Genin
Type: Ninjutsu
Using either a touch or an iten (such as a shuriken), you deliver a chakra charge to a target, be it an object, person, or patch of a wall or piece of dirt. This chakra manifests as an ultraviolet glow that, while invisible to normal human eyesight appears as a bright, unmistakable mark to Leviathans, designating the target as a priority kill mark.

Siege Mechanics Number One
Level: Genin
Type: Ninjutsu
Allows a ninja to activate the First Rank of Siege Leviathan weapons, mostly limited to those upon hatchling Leviathans. Activating a weapon requires you to be attuned to a particular Leviathan, a process that takes weeks, and requires you to be within 40 yards of the Leviathan to activate thier mechanics.

Unspeakable Horror
Level: Genin
Type: Genjutsu
Assaults an enemy shinobi's eyes, to effect him/her you must lock eyes to the target. When activated the genjutsu invades thier senses, making you appear to take the shape of an misshapen, demonic horror. What shape this is is unknowable as it exists only in the target's mind, dredged up from nightmares and deep fears. It of course has a stronger effect against green shinobi, those who have seen true battle tend to be able to resist the fear effect this genjutsu generates while those who are not used to such fears will find themselves overtaken by terror.

The Jutsu is named after its effect. No target has ever been able to describe what he has seen under its effects, regardless of how strong thier will and how unrattled they were by it. Brave or not thier conscious mind will not allow them to recall that visage.

Leviathan's Stomp
Level: Genin
Type: Taijutsu
By channeling the spirit of the Leviathan and unleashing your chakra the user temporarily numbs up his hand or foot. While it does not prevent him from breaking his bones and tearing his flesh, it takes away the fear and pain, allowing him to throw his fist or foot much harder than they normally would, even allowing you to sunder objects.

Tam Clan Character Requirements

To create a Tam Clan Character, the following is required:

One, as per Cannogakure Standards, you need to add a "Long Term Goals" section to your character profile. As well you must start as an Academy Student if you are new to Cannogakure.

Two, while within the Academy you will need to take one of the following as an extra course: Leviathans and You, Cannogakure Legal Codes and Ethics, or an extra History class.

Three, YOU WILL NOT START WITH ANY FORBIDDEN JUTSUS! IF, IF you want to learn one you'll need to talk to me, PRIVATELY first. And be prepared to give me a compelling case that promises lots of epic roleplaying.

Cannogakure - The Nagato Clan

The Nagato Clan are the merchantmen, the craftsmen, the traders, and the diplomats of Cannogakure. Nagato Clan shinobi tend to be very open and personable, willing to accept outsiders and thier ideas.

The Nagato Clan is a recent addition to Cannogakure. They arose not as a family concern, or even a shared set of jutsus and techniques as shinobi, but as a tradesmen guild, first formed up by the weaponsmiths of Cannogakure, and expanding quickly to take in all the merchants of the village, from bakeries to artists, the only thing they ask for is quality of product.

The Nagato Clan is quite massive, and has the vast majority of wealth and economic power within the village. They produce nearly all the weapons used by the village, including the masterworks that often find thier ways into the hands of Staal Clan ninja. As well as most of the refined goods that make thier way out of the village into the hands of traders from distant lands.

Due to the Nagato Clan membership being based on a family's trade skills rather than bloodline or secrets it has become the largest clan within the village and holds political power far beyond its young age.

It is hard to say what a typical Nagato Clan ninja is like. Most families have different reasons for pushing thier sons and daughters into the ninja academy, though many are pushed that way to give the Clan more power in the ranks of the shinobi, cementing thier grip in Cannogakure's halls of power. Some families press thier children to become shinobi to act as personal guards to thier trade's interests, and in the darkest cases, to sabotage thier rivals within Cannogakure, or the steal industrial secrets from the lands they visit.

Due to thier mercantile nature, most shinobi from the Nagato Clan are used to dealing with foriegners, making them the chief diplomats and envoys of Cannogakure, as well as bodyguards hired to important travelers.

The Nagato Clan has its own agenda, more organized as a faction than any of the other clans of Cannogakure. As such they often press the Shinobi from thier Clan into services that help achieve these goals. Such missions are often dangerous, of questionable legality, and carry harsh penalties for those who deny the power of this new clan.

Requirements for a Nagato Clan Character

To create a Nagato Clan Character, the following is required:

One, as per Cannogakure Standards, you need to add a "Long Term Goals" section to your character profile. As well you must start as an Academy Student if you are new to Cannogakure.

Two, Nagato Clan shinobi must have parents affilitated with some trade. What this trade is, is up to you. However it must be mentioned in your profile.

Three, Understand that as a Nagato Clan character your family will be better off than others. While this means your character would have more money, and a better quality of life, that it also comes with strings attached to the Nagato Clan, and that you may be required to take missions in the Clan's interests above and beyond your normal workload. Failing to do so will exile you from the clan, with serious consequences.

Cannogakure - The Myoko Clan

The Myoko Clan are the scouts, spies, and safekeepers of the Cannogakure Herd. Myoko Clan shinobi are hard, bitter men and women, even by Cannogakure standards.

The Myoko Clan arose in the aftermath of the Dark Age of Hiten Tam. After his betrayal there became a recognition that such a disaster could never happen again. The Myoko Clan was culled from the most loyal, patriotic ninja within the village, given a loyalty and orders to serve the village, free from the commands of any other group, even the Lord.

While Myoko Clan ninja cannot be ordered by anyone within the village, they are loyal to the village, and this loyalty often makes them follow "Suggestions" given by authority figures within the village as long as it does not conflict with the oaths they gave at the Shinsei School.

If the Tam Clan can be viewed as Internal Security and the Police Force of Cannogakure, then the Myoko Clan is the spymasters, assassins, and intelligence agency of Cannogakure. Myoko Clan ninja mostly keep thier focus outwards, on threats from the outside world upon Cannogakure. They are second only to the Nagato Clan in thier contact with the Outsiders, frequently sending thier Shinsei Scouts ahead of the Herd to inflitrate the native populaces, assess threats, and neutralize as necessary.

Of course the oldest, and primary oath that graduates of the Shinsei School take is to guard forever against corruptions within Cannogakure Society. Sedition is often handled by the Tams instead, though Myoko Clan shinobi have cracked down on certain cells before. Rather they keep thier eyes, and thier blades, pointed at the leadership of the village, ever watchful for the taint of evil.

The Myoko Clan is highly organized. Only the most dedicated, advanced genin out of the Reaver Academy are asked to join the Shinsei School. The courses there are grueling, and the average gradutation rate is 10%.

At graduation a Myoko Shinobi is given the Shinsei Emblem, and takes several binding oaths in a long ceremony that culminates in a Sealing, literally making his word his bond over his body and soul to the greater vision of Cannogakure.

From then on, regardless of birth status, the shinobi is a Myoko.

Myoko Clan Special Jutsus

The following are just a few of the jutsus that young Myoko Clan scout are trained in. While it is not guaranteed that a Myoko Clan shinobi would necessarily know these jutsus, let them be a guideline for creating new jutsus.

The Spotlight of Judgement
Level: Genin
Type: Ninjutsu
A basic jutsu learned in the Shinsei School. The ninja using this jutsu summons a bright light into his hand, launching it up straight above him until it is 60 feet in the air. The light then bursts, shining bright upon the ground under it for a span of two minutes. The light in the sky is usually shaded in different hues to reflect the situation the ninja is in as both a warning and a beacon to other Myoko Clan shinobi.

Ghostway
Level: Genin
Type: Ninjutsu
The Myoko Clan shinobi uses this art during infiltration and assassination missions to avoid detection before the deed is complete. This jutsu is a specialized version of the basic transformation that most Academy Students learn, however, rather than changing the shape of the user, it instead allows the ninja to change the shape of an unconscious or dead target temporarily. Allowing them to hide bodies for a few hours before the transformation comes undone.

Art of the Subduing Fist
Level: Genin
Type: Taijutsu
Requires good to excellent chakra control. The shinobi in question uses his chakra delivered through his fingertips into his target. This chakra sinks into the person's flesh, delivering a shock to the victim's nerves, causing thier affected body part to sieze up painfully. This does not actually cripple thier victim, but can often make them flinch and open up the way for further strikes or even capture depending on how severe the location hit was.

Avoidance Field
Level: Genin
Type: Genjutsu
Sound based mind effecting jutsu. When activated this jutsu creates a nearly inaudible humming sound in the air around the ninja just barely above the minimal range the human ear can hear. This genjutsu makes it harder for those effected to notice the shinobi generating the effect. By no means does it render a ninja invisible. An enemy staring right at him will still notice him, but creates a little bug in his mind which tells his eyes to avoid where the shinobi currently is, making up excuses not to glance in the ninja's direction.

Myoko Clan Character Requirements

To createa a Myoko Clan Character, the following is required:

One, as per Cannogakure Standards, you need to add a "Long Term Goals" section to your character profile. As well you must start as an Academy Student if you are new to Cannogakure.

Two, after graduating from the Reaver Academy you must take a full set of courses within the Shinsei School to train in the Myoko Arts.

Three, Myoko Clan characters must be willing to swear the oaths of the Myoko Clan upon graduating from the Shinsei School. These include oaths to the greater loyalty towards Cannogakure, to strike down the specter of Hiten where it arises, to protect the herd from threats external, and to keep sacred the Rites of Shinsei. Upon taking these oaths the ninja is branded with several sacred Shinsei Seals, which activate and punish a shinobi who betrays these sacred vows.

Things to Consider for the Potential Cannogakure Character

Please keep the following in mind when creating Cannogakure Characters. While you do not have to use or implement all of the ideas here, it can and should help give you a picture of the village.

Cannogakure ninja prefer to wear "natural" and "bright" colors. Most clothes within the village are blues, teals, greens, with splashes of orange, reds, and yellows. Garish perhaps but it is the standard that has grown.

Cannogakure ninja are more martial than the ninja of other villages. Shinobi are expected to be "Soldiers" in time of war, and have a strict sense of discipline, order, and chain of command.

As well there is a tradition in Cannogakure of weapon use. Weapons are a primary tool for the Cannogakure Shinobi. Rather than useless dry humping throw away weapons like Shuriken, most Cannogakure ninja practice with a melee weapon and use it in thier arts.

By the flip side ranged weapons are rare in Cannogakure. Shuriken, Kunai, and other such items are seldom issued and seldom used. Most of thier ranged firepower comes from Jutsus or Leviathans.

Cannogakure is a nomadic village, keep that in mind. Also in particular the idea that they are seldom outside of the "ninja lands" in thier history. This means that they are not limited to typical japanese weapons and arts. In fact it's quite normal to find a Cannogakure ninja using a Bec de Corbin rather than a Katana.

Cannogakure citizens are very insular. Until they become a shinobi it is very likely that they have not met more than 20 or 30 people in thier whole life, with some notable exceptions in the Nagato Clan.

Cannogakure is a poor village. It maintains its power and military status by sacrificing the quality of life for its citizens. The average citizen enjoys less perks than thier landbound cousins, and certain convenient technologies and comforts ranging from movies to flower shops are unheard of there.

Cannogakure is rife with political strife. The heads of clans, and high ranking shinobi are constantly playing at a game of shadows for political power, prestige, and honor. These games often have a very real effect on Cannogakure's lower citizens.

Cannogakure is dependant, for the most part, on a scavenging and salvaging lifestyle. Most goods within the village are hand crafted by people within the village, gathered from materials found during thier Grand Migration. While the Nagato Clan has brought trade to the village it is fairly new and goods from foriegn lands are still rare, and mostly in the hands of the better off families.

There is a schism within the village ranks right now, between those who want a more open policy with the ninja lands, those who wish to be isolationist, and the rare people who try to walk the line between them.

Within Cannogakure the State has complete power over any individual. Shinobi with the Lord's orders could come in, take your home, your dinner, your pet Oophie, your favorite sweater, whatever.

Cannogakure citizens are quite accepting of religion, oddly enough. Most common among thier society is a form of Ancestor Worship, where great ancestors who have been approved as Saints are prayed to and worshipped. While not all Cannogakure Citizens practice this religion it is common enough most any shinobi would be passingly familiar with it at least. Other religions from lands they travel are often recorded and worshipped by those that choose. Those who are religious are seldom loyal to only one faith.

Cannogakure ninja are taught to depend on others, even above and beyond "Squads". Each ninja is a compatriot to every other ninja within Cannogakure. They are taught early on how to work together in battle and on missions, and are almost never taught to be the lone wolf.

Cannogakure ninja rarely have assigned squads or teachers, but rather are given teammates and leaders as determined necessary by the missions they are given.

Cannogakure ninja practice many "Close Quarters Combat" type ninja arts. While they go abroad and travel as much, if not more so, than other ninja, first and foremost in thier schooling is the defense of the herd, and fighting upon the close, built in structures of the Cannogakure Leviathans. This early training tends to effect most of thier later development.

Few Cannogakure ninja have personal weapons. The village itself maintains a large armory spread out upon the Leviathans which doles out equipment as needed for missions and training. Most citizens and shinobi have usually just one or two personal pieces of equipment.

Cannogakure is not a "Nanny state". People are not just given the means to live and survive by some benevolent overlord. Citizens are expected to pull thier weight, and if a family cannot earn enough to put food on its table, they will depend on the good will of thier neighbors or starve.
