Amaury and Lite-Brite had been living together in their hilltop copse for months now. Their found den had been dug out and now accommodated the both of them, and with the nearby native village and the variety of small prey in the stand of trees, they were quite well-off. More often they hunted, trying not to take too often from the village lest they be detected, but the thrill of stealing and the higher quality of the human meat still brought Amaury back from time to time.

Things had settled down enough that they had been able to think of a future. Of a family. Amaury hadn't realized it would happen so quickly, though! Her belly grew heavier and with it came all the fear and excitement of a first-time mother. She knew it was a risk, two wolves raising pups all on their own, but she felt prepared for it.

She delighted in the tiny motions she felt from her stomach, and delighted more in Lite-Brite's pleased reactions. He would make a great father. Today, though, she felt heavier than ever, the pups in her belly more active. She had planned to lie out in the sun on the hillside and wait for Lite-Brite to return with a meal, but she could not seem to settle down for more than a few minutes at a time. She paced in the long grass, dry with the coming winter, wanting her mate at her side to reassure her.

Lite-Brite had been excited, so excited, the sensations inside him were new, yet oddly familiar. Being a father was something new, wonderful, and having Amaury was equally wonderful. He truly loved her in a way he couldn't remember ever loving anything or anyone. Yet the protective urges he felt were familiar, the way his body would slide into offensive positions and the way his eyes tracked the area around him. The behaviors were more then just his own natural instinct, he had used these traits before, he had protected, but what or who he could not recall. Deep in the dark of night behind closed eyes the wild splashes of color would appear for him, a faint echo of his past.

For now though, the only thing he was focused on was getting a meal to his mate quickly. He felt tense and prickly being away from her side, especially since she had seemed so ready. He was worried though, it hadn't been easy with just one hunting to feed them all. What if she hadn't enough to eat? His own stomach tightened in a reminder that he hadn't eaten so well to ensure she got enough, but was that enough?

He darted and like a streak of light the rabbit in his jaws never saw him coming. Satisfied, in his hunting ability at least, he headed back to the den to feed his mate, and the future mother of his children.

Amaury had just settled into an uncomfortable sit when she saw her mate approaching. She stood, the motion taking longer than it once had, and barked once. She felt... exhausted, but jittery, a sensation familiar to her but one she had not felt for a long time. It was the way she felt when she was tired from a raid but knew she had to keep moving or her trail would be picked up.

Lite-Brite came bearing a rabbit corpse, but even though she knew she had to eat to nourish the lives growing in her belly, the thought of wolfing down the warm flesh turned Amaury's stomach. Nausea -- that was more recently familiar.

Still, she put on a smile for Lite-Brite. "Thank you, love," she said, as he approached, nuzzling the side of his face affectionately. She hid a wince as one of the pups in her belly kicked hard. "Let's... let's take it back to the den." Maybe in those comforting surroundings her nesting instincts would kick in and she'd manage to lie down.

He might have given in to the distressed feeling inside of him, the welling concern for his mate, but he had to be strong for her. He nodded firmly and headed them toward the den his body carefully wrapping itself to her trying to shield her from the very air itself. Silly perhaps but Amaury was currently the only thing he cared about in the world, and within her were his future concerns. He had no clue about his past but he was certain that this dark femme was his future.

"You eat it all..." He murmured softly against her ear and slipped behind her into the den waiting for her to settle herself down, it had been hard for her adjusting to new positions.

Amaury smiled and nosed Lite-Brite's lanky side as he entered the den. "You need to eat too, you know," she told him. "The pups need their father, as well."

She ripped a piece from a fuzzy haunch to please him, swallowing the meat while trying not to taste it. Her hind legs folded onto the ground, and her forelegs trembled as she felt the pups move again. "Ah!" she exclaimed. "They're so active..."

Soon she had to lay her whole body down as another pain rippled through it. She tried to be dignified about it, to not worry her mate. But this was different from anything she'd felt before! She thought back, trying to figure out how long she had been pregnant and how long it was supposed to be before they came out. Could it possibly be time...? She had never witnessed a birth, or spoken with another female about it. She flopped onto her side and panted.

"Lite-Brite..." she breathed. "I... I think the puppies are coming." The very end of the sentence carried a note of panic.

He tensed as she lay down, her eyes were what gave her away, he could see her pain. He slowly moved to lay down with her gently trying to cushion her body and nuzzling her ears. "You al-" but before he could ask she spoke.

Her own small note of panic almost triggered his, but he knew better, he could not panic. He would NOT panic, he was going to be there for his mate, be her solid rock. He softly licked her cheek and then looked up and around, but there was no aid to be found, nothing he could do to help, except reassure her.

"It's going to be alright Amaury, puppies are natural...we won't have any problems." He forced his voice to be calm, steady, trying to reassure his mate and himself.

Whining, Amaury realized there was not much she could do except try to get comfortable and wait. She heaved with the pressure that came at intervals in her pelvis. It hurt, more than anything else she could have imagined.

When the pain subsided, she touched her nose to Lite-Brite's. It was a spot of cool moisture against her fevered body. "I'm glad you're here..." she said, before another pain gripped her body.

With one more push, out came a pup, his pelt a swirling of Lite-Brite's yellow-green and Amaury's reddish-brown. Amaury licked at his little body, as her instincts told her to, but he wasn't moving. Why wasn't he moving? Her ears pricked forward with concern, and she whimpered. What was wrong with her baby?

She hardly had time to worry, however, because a minute later, out came the second pup. She looked most like her father, but with black and brown markings on her side and face. Amaury could sense that was not all the pups, but her body seemed to be giving her a break; enough time so that she could clean off her live baby girl and nose it along to suckle, which she did, eagerly.
