so im sure most of you have noticed that i am online less than most of you. im sure this is very dissapointing to all of you.. yes well im sorry. so this morning instead of being on gaia i was reading an awsome book by a gentleman named will shetterly. and then i finished it. and then i got on gaia and then i was like " i wish someone on gaia had read this so that i could talk to someone about how awsome it was" and thats when it hit me. we should have a guild book club. it sounds kind of lame. but it would actually be really cooL! everyone could nominate thier favourite books and then we could recomend them to guild members and have a discussion and it just think it would be f*cking awsome!

so yes. feed back please. or book recomendation, or really anything else you want to say that is at least vaugly related to this idea.

also this thread is called the brain trust and its a sticky because if anyone else has any cool ideas about guild activities that we could do to improve out inner-guild relations i want to hear about em! so yes! post please!

what books?! *looks up from Vampire encyclopedia* I'm not even through the "B"'s yet~! ;3;

genius, though I confess I haven't read as many books as I would have liked because most stories don't interest me, take too long to start the plot, or I just end up not having the time. :/ it'd be nice to have recomandations from people with similiar interests. :3

If I can just make a recommendation...

The Black Jewels Trilogy by Anne Bishop:
~Daughter of the Blood
~Heir to the Shadows
~Queen of the Darkness

I'm not entirely sure whether or not I can give a good description... but I can say I got into them pretty quickly. They're fairly good-sized books, and I finished them in three days. One right after another. Couldn't put them down.
'Twas a very good series, I think. sweatdrop

huh... nice ^_^...

Well... right now... i'm currently in the middle of reading an excellent series by Anne McCafferey: The Dragonriders of Pern.

it's got ... 20+ books in it (to my knowledge), and i've barely read 10 >.<. So I'll give you a list of the ones I know of... and * the ones I've read...

Dragonflight*
Dragonsong* (Melody ^_^... yay)
Dragonsinger* (see above)
Dragonsdawn*
Dragonquest*
Renegades of Pern*
All the Weyrs of Pern
The Skies of Pern*
The Masterharper of Pern* (Robinton, rocks!!!)
The Dolphins of Pern
The Chronicles of Pern* (well... i'm halfway through)
The Chronicles of Pern 2
Dragondrums
The Atlas of Pern
Dragon's cousin (or something close... my dad has the tapes... i'll have to check >.<)
The White Dragon* (Ruth and Jaxom... cool despite it all)

and right now that's all i can think of... I'm pretty sure there's more... but ya...

It's one of the coolest series I've ever read ^_^. It's Sci-fi, but most of the books are set so it seems more... medievil i suppose. Truly a great series. I reccomend it to anyone.

edit: Moreta's Ride* (not sure if that's exactly what it's called, but good book)

yeesh, it's been WAY too long since I've read an actual book. (excluding my wonderful vampire encyc. heart )

but...

"The Man in the Ceiling"
is a must for any up and coming comic creators, and the perfect medicine for those "why am I even trying/all my art sucks/I'll never make it" slumps. Though it was originally for kids, it still amuses me to this day, and will probebly remain on my bookshelf till I die. :3

I may just be biased, but i think everyone should read "The Sheik" by E.M. Hull. If you can get ahold of it, that is...it's pretty obscure.

It was first published in around 1918, banned as pornography, then re-released in 1921 after the release of the (silent) movie by the same name, starring the wildly popular Italian actor (and first real movie celebrity) Rudolph Valentino. (warning: large image)

It's a really good book, especially considering the time in which it was written. Unlike the movie, which was fluff even for the '20s (but still totally worth watching xD ), The Sheik is far ahead of its time, and i would warn younger readers to read it at their own discretion. There's nothing directly graphic in it at all, but there are things implied within it that still disturb me as an 18-year-old.

Nevertheless, it remains one of my favorite books. I absolutely despised the main character, Diana, in the movie, because she came across as a stuck-up snivelling damsel-in-distress. In the book, however, I thought she made a more realistic and powerful protagonist than any I've read in most modern stories.

Hmmm interesting. I've read the Pegasus series and the Rowan series by Anne McCafferty, the Chronicles of Pern, but most of my books are school related...The Things the Carried by Tim O'Brien and what not.

what exactly is "The Sheik" about, persay? what what the images showed it seemed to be something possibly in the Arabian Knights setting. . . ? confused
PostPosted: Mon Dec 12, 2005 11:07 am

The Sheik is about a rich English girl by the name of Diana Mayo, who is a complete and utter tomboy. She's very beautiful, very tough, and very over-confident. She is constantly bombarded by suitors, and she coldly dismisses each and every one of them. Her late father was a famous poet, which - combined with her scandalous behavior - makes very famous.

The story starts out in Biskra, the night before her scheduled trip out into the desert... alone!! (The thirty or so Arab servants and guides don't count, of course). Diana ignores even her own brother's pleas for her not to go, confident that she can handle any dangers that come her way.

Then, on her first night out into the desert, her caravan is attacked and she is kidnapped by... the Sheik.

ninja I shall say no more.

Preemptive warning to all out there who have never read a romance novel: don't. For the love of all that is good and holy (or not, depending on your preference), spare yourself the anguish!!
