Mine, came the brassy, cheerful, bright sound of Luceth's voice, I think that it is dinnertime. I'lan looked up from the fur he was spreading over his bed, brows furrowing.
What? You just ate three candlemarks ago, Luce... how can you be hungry already? Straightening up, he planted one hand in his back, grunting softly with the effort it took, scrunching his nose and sighing.
Come with me, I'lanmine, said the little blue, craning his neck around to look at his rider with eyes whirling a luminous green as he prodded his nose into I'lan's back, forcibly straightening him up. I will drop you off and you can watch me!
As ever, with a quiet sigh and an affectionate shake of his head, I'lan let himself be bullied and prodded onto Luceth's back, and then launched upward and outward.

Senoth had decided to feed as well and she was circling above the wherry herd in tight circles, looking to pick one of the herd beasts off. The light green, large for her colour, was intent on her dinner, and a moment later she trimmed her wings and dipped into a controlled freefall that sent the wherries to scattering. They were used to the dragons but the plummeting form of a hunter still frightened them.
Catching one as she flared her wings and fairly pounced the unfortunate beast, Senoth bore the prey item into the ground and huffed with satisfaction as she came to a stop. Not an inconsiderate dragon, she did pick it up and drag the carcass to the edge of the wherry field where her rider waited, always watching, always attentive.
He'd long gotten used to the sight of a dragon feasting but still made him lips curl in involuntary cringing as steam rose into the air from the opened bird. "Don't be too messy, we have Flight Practice soon and I don't want to arrive covered in blood."
<<It is alright, Mine, I am hungry - I am anxious for Flight Practice too. See? I am dainty am I not?>> She lifted her head to display the blood covered muzzle and the few drips down her throat.
He laughed and nodded despite himself. As much as that was hardly dainty, he had to agree - some dragons reveled in the kill. "You are dainty, Mine."
She bobbed her head, eyes whirling the colours of hunger of contentment as she returned to her meal.

There, look! Below! Someone for you to talk to, I'lanmine, said Luceth, with his usual bossy cheer. While I eat. You need to meet more people here. You have been hiding in our weyr like a tunnelsnake in its hole.
For a moment, I'lan debated on arguing with Luceth. Really, it was a bit like arguing with a stone wall, if an exceedingly cheerful and friendly one -- and one who tended to push back. I have not been hiding, I have been trying to clean it up properly. There is so much dust... and it is so cold!
More reason for you to have companions, mine. The blue's voice was edged with amusement, quick and bright and warm. For you to share drink and food with. You can hardly eat after me. The landing was surprisingly light as Luceth dipped, pulled himself up, and spilled air from his wingsails to alight comfortably on the cool ground. I can hardly feed with you there. Craning his neck around, the little blue snorted, eyed the other man and the nearby green -- who brought bright hues of curiosity to his gaze. She was his size! Go. Talk!
Sighing deeply, I'lan let himself slide down Luceth's shoulder, thumping down onto the ground and landing a bit awkwardly on his weak ankle, drawing a little wince. This climate was not at all pleasant for aches and pains, was it? Still, he had no idea what to say or even if the other man was interested in speaking with him. Ruefully he watched as his bonded extended his wings and left the ground with a trumpet of glee and only the tiniest of stumbles.

Senoth eyed the blue and the man he fairly dumped from his shoulders with curiosity. <<He is a little blue, Mine. Like I am a big green... I wonder who is faster...>>
G'ail frowned at his dragon and chuckled, reaching out to pat her shoulder from his perch on the top of the fence. "It might be close, you know. If you're the same size, you might match paces too."
<<Possibly. Maybe I'll ask him to race me... I wonder if he'll be able to catch me.>> Senoth mused, tilting her head, <<He is a very handsome blue. But his rider... are they new Mine? I do not know their names.>>
"Probably, I haven't seen them around here before. The rider looks like he's got an old injury." Pursing his lips in concern, he slid off the fence and landed neatly on his feet. "Hey! New to the Weyr? You haven't hurt yourself, have you? The healers aren't too far away if you want to find one." Smiling broadly, he offered a friendly wave.
<<Good! See, Mine! That's what you should do. Go talk to others. Tell me if you like him, hmn? He is handsome too... Do you like him?>> Senoth called, having stopped her meal long enough to watch the two meet, obviously hoping for good things.
G'ail groaned, and glanced over his shoulder, brow arched, I don't even know his name, Senoth! And he might be hurt. Shush, okay? Jeeze...

As they often did, I'lan's eyes had wandered to follow the handsome figure of Luceth as the blue flew wide circles, spiraling up; he felt the by-now-familiar sense of dizzying happiness settle comfortable and warm in the back of his mind. It was a pleasant distraction from the ache that settled, rusty and dull, in the bones of his ankle. He wanted warm oil, to rub until the muscles relaxed, and perhaps then what was left he would rub into Luceth's hide. He was so grateful that Luceth was not larger than he was, because then he would have to --
However, he was startled from his thoughts of lavish affection by the unfamiliar -- though certainly welcome -- sound of the other's voice. I'lan paused a moment, but offered a smile a bit broader than the small, lazy one that had lingered about the corners before. "Aye, I am new to the Weyr -- only a day or three," replied I'lan, turning his grey gaze to G'ail with a smile as he moved forward to greet him, slightly haltingly, but with a warm returning wave to offset, he hoped, his hesitancy to walk too fast. "My name's I'lan, and that's my Luceth, up there. My injury's not much to worry about, I'm afraid." His smile broadened again, a lazy flash of white teeth. "It's an old thing. Never quite healed right, and the cold's got it acting up."
See there, Luceth? I'm making an effort to speak more, thought I'lan privately, in the direction of his dragon, who circled above surveying the array of plump wherries. That had in fact been quite a mouthful for him -- even in pleasant company, the bluerider tended towards quietness, but G'ail's friendliness caught him a bit off guard, made him speak more than usual in gratefulness. People back home had rarely asked questions of him, which only made his self-imposed silence deeper.
So you are, I'lanmine, replied Luceth, pride touching his voice. Keep talking. I will be down soon enough. A few adjustments spilled air from the blue's wingsails, and he dipped down a touch; he'd pinned his bright, whirling gaze on a particular animal, and he would have it or die trying.

"That is new." He chuckled, smiling warmly, "I'm G'ail or Gabrail, depends on what you prefer. And this 'dainty' beauty here is Senoth. Oh... yeah, the cold tends to exacerbate injuries here. I'm not looking forward to when I get old enough to feel it in my own bones, to be honest. There's too much to do." G'ail chuckled, "Finding everything alright? A Weyr's a Weyr, after all but we've our own little quirks. Where's you transfer from?"
Senoth, however, was only half paying attention to her rider. He was talking to another and she was happy from that alone. Her attention was firmly on her meal so that when she was introduced, she was busily tossing back a chunk of meat like the predator she was, pausing only to grin at I'lan. <<Mine, I will look more dainty if you choose better times to introduce me. I want to impress the people you like.... >> She pouted at him quietly, more for something to say then to be petulant.
He simply smiled at that, "Though now I'm getting told my timing is terrible."

"I am pleased to meet you, G'ail," said I'lan mildly, "and greetings to you as well, Senoth. I am sure that Luceth will offer greetings as well, once he is less preoccupied." Seeing the bloody-muzzled draconian grin, he couldn't help chuckling and offering a deep bow, neat and quick from the waist, the soft fluffy tail of his hair dislodging over one shoulder. He knew Luceth liked to be acknowledged by other riders, and so why should Senoth not?
"I have been," he admitted a bit gravely, "spending much of my time in my weyr, which Luceth has chided me quite a bit for. I confess that I have found myself a bit at a loss -- doing quite a lot of cleaning and arranging my things." His smile was rueful and brief, a quick flicker across his brown features, but which caught in the brightness of his grey eyes. "I came from Fort Weyr -- I was born there, and so I am a bit uncertain of myself here. I do miss the sun and the heat, but the briskness is growing on me, I'll admit."
For his part, with a trumpet that any brown would have been proud of, Luceth simply hailed from the sky and fell upon the beast of his choosing with quick, precise motions, bringing it down before the poor unfortunate wherry had half a moment to ponder its own demise. The satisfying crunch of bone made bright blues deepen among the reddish hunger in his gaze. Was that not neatly done, mine? prompted Luceth, privately. I wished to make us look good.
Faint red seeped into I'lan's cheeks, and he harrumphed softly. Very well done, indeed.

"Ah, yes. There are many weyrs that are empty..." He frowned sadly as he glanced up at the many ledges edging the weyrbowl, "It is to good have another among the ranks though. Welcome to High Reaches Weyr!"
He nodded then, "From warmer weather then. I grew up near High Reaches Hold so the chill is nothing to me and rather like an old friend. You'll get used to it, I think, or the winter will be rather miserable for you. A good cup of klah helps keep the cold at bay, I find."
Both Senoth and G'ail glanced in Luceth's direction as the blue dropped from the sky and when G'ail turned back to I'lan, he found him blushing softly. Bemused, he thought their dragons were similar in mindset - though he'd long ago learned not to blush too badly when Senoth insisted he talk to someone lest it make her 'encouragement' worse.
The sharp snap of a bone echoed into the air as Senoth cracked a large bone and enjoyed the marrow within, <<I like that blue... Luceth? He flies well and takes his prey well. Impress his rider, Mine, I would like to see them again... >> She blinked as she noticed I'lan's blush as well and whuffled quietly, something akin to a laugh, <<Mine, he is blushing like you sometimes do. Speak to him more, go on. I think he likes you.>>
She was obviously hopeful, as she had a personal interest in this as well. Whenever a dragon caught her interest, the green would encourage G'ail's exposure to their rider. She would not be flown by a dragon whose rider Hers did not like but... that didn't mean she couldn't try to encourage friendship between them first!
G'ail laughed softly, I will try, Senoth, but I approach him as friend, alright? I am not so amorous as you are.

A smile settled on I'lan's face, small and serious but genuine. This one was pleasant to speak to already, and seemed not to mind his tendency toward being rather taciturn. "I am sure that many others will come in my wake," he murmured, and offered a narrow bow as if to say, let it be so. "I will have to get used to klah again, mind. I am more accustomed to juice and water, but it seems I shall require something a bit more fortifying to keep my spirits high." The smile twitched, became something more broad for a moment, bringing warmth into his grey gaze. "And perhaps other methods for keeping warm as well..."
For his part, Luceth had set about avidly getting into his favorite bits of his kill, burying his muzzle into the warm flesh as he settled his wings neatly. He was not one to gobble down his food, but eager to get to the socializing, Luceth did not mind eating a bit quickly. Besides, his seemed to be relaxing, and if I'lan could speak without too much interference, it would be best to let him work on that particular skill. Mine, it has been a long time since you said so many words in one place, teased Luceth, and amused affection filtered in around the edges of I'lan's consciousness. This one is encouraging!
If he had not been more than aware of how he looked, I'lan would have very quietly buried his face in his hand and shaken his head... Instead, he settled for a slight, internal sigh.

G'ail blinked at that sentiment and tilted his head, "Other methods? Well..." He glanced away, unsure of whether or not he had just been propositioned, "There's drills and the usual activity... I don't know what else you'd consider. Company, perhaps?"
Senoth had glanced up when that exchange took place and grinned at Hers, <<See, Mine, your friend likes you... He is handsome, you should agree. Eat dinner? See the sun set? What is it you call that... a...>> She searched his mind as her words brought memories fluttering up and she rumbled pleasantly when she found the word, <<A date! You should date with him. You need more friends.>>
G'ail couldn't help the groan that eased from his throat then and he shook his head, sighing, "Senoth has a good point, perhaps we should go find something to eat ourselves once Yours is finished eating?" << That's not what I meant, Mine. Be more friendly. >>She swung her head over to look at the blue, <<Luceth, does Yours want Mine? Mine won't listen to me... and he needs more company. Does Yours like... ah, Mine calls it close company.>>
Senoth! G'ail flushed at that and shifted, glancing away from I'lan as he wrung his hands.

"I intended to say company," sputtered I'lan after a moment. This was why he did not speak overly often, or at least part of it. He would have sworn that he could say the worst possible thing at the worst possible time. "B-but yes, going to find food would be good, perhaps, if you would like..."
At the direct address, Luceth lifted his head, licking blood a bit daintily from his muzzle as he regarded Senoth with amused blue whirling in his bright eyes to drown out whatever hunger remained as he had neatly decimated much of the poor beast that lay dead in the dust. His head cocked faintly, and he turned his gaze to I'lan, regarding him a long moment.
I'lan knew that look, and he did not particularly like it.
I think, said Luceth with a brassy rumble, that I'lanmine would like Yours quite a lot, if they could be convinced to stop stammering at each other. Mine has been quite known to enjoy such things.
I am hardly stammering! yelped I'lan internally, stiffening a bit and looking from Luceth to Senoth and then to G'ail, and back to Luceth. And I do not g-get... close without a reason!
But you would not make the first move even if you did want Hers, Mine, chuckled Luceth, smug and self-satisfied. So I will make it for you. See, are we not a terribly good team? Besides, you have every reason to.
A mutinous expression crossed I'lan's features. We are a good team, but t-this... it would be one thing if she were rising, but this is hardly an amorous moment; I have only just met the man! Sure, G'ail was rather pleasant to look upon, but... he was not going there.
At least not yet. Companionship and a firm bond of friendship, yes, but from the sound of it, Luceth was after rather more, which the reserved I'lan was more than capable of digging his heels in against for the time being.

"Sounds like a plan." He spoke, gesturing towards the Weyr's entrance and began to walk towards what he hoped was a reprieve from an overly considerate dragon.
Senoth nodded at Luceth, <<They should stop stammering, yes. Riders all stammer lots when they like each other... Ours should be more like us, yes? If they want someone, they are honest about it. I do not understand why they are awkward.>> She rumbled with laughter as G'ail protested her comments, <<Mine is so motherly and does like others... but doesn't not tell the others he likes them. Confusing, don't you think?>>
G'ail sighed, amazed that Senoth had to pick the one dragon that seemed to share an opinion with her on this subject and caught I'lan by the elbow, hurrying him indoors and away from their gossiping dragons. At least they couldn't hear them if they were in the kitchen? Or, well, at least not as easily as if they were in earshot.

The bluerider was more than content to let himself be hurried away toward the kitchen, mortified. Beneath the feathery rumple of his hair, I'lan's face burned with a blush all the way to the tips of his ears. "I am sorry," he apologized as soon as they were out of earshot of the two great meddling troublemakers -- though the thought was edged with a wash of exasperated affection. "Luceth is terribly pushy on occasion, but I hardly expected him to lobby for... for such a thing." He sounded deeply chagrined, but was smiling anyway. "If you ask him he knows what is best for me at all times."
Enjoy your date, I'lanmine, Luceth sent with a strong rush of affection, before turning his attention firmly back to Senoth, eyes brightening with pleased blue-violet. Mine is indecisive for himself, but wishes to brood over others like a queen over her clutch. Do you think that Ours will both brood over one another until given the right push? Deep amusement filled him, and something like a rumbling half-laugh sounded in his chest.

G'ail sighed, "Senoth is... a passionate one. I am sorry. She's also rather convinced that I am in need of company. I disagree but she's always going on about how I need to pay attention to myself." He laughed, "If I don't, she arranges things with other dragons... it's sometimes frustrating. I love her, but it's frustrating sometimes."
Senoth's eyes whirled green and blue as she nodded,<< I think if they are not supervised, they will dance about like little ones. Mine pays too much attention to others... He should remember he cannot be happy if he only cares for other people. He doesn't have many friends so it's my job to make sure he takes care of himself. >>She sounded amused, echoing the other's entertainment, and huffed. Hers was too good, she thought, and didn't remember himself often enough.

"It is quite alright," murmured I'lan with a small, amused sound. "Luceth is similarly convinced, though I tend to find myself in crowds quite often." He shook his head, sighing deeply. "And if I do not, such as now, he decides that I require a... push toward companionship." Grey eyes rolled skyward, seeking patience, though it was not directed at his present company. "He can be terribly bossy, though often enough I simply give in." He seemed to be recovering from his embarrassment a bit, now, drawing in a deep breath. "Still, it is good to pay attention to one's own desires, mind."
Mine... thinks too much. Good opportunities simply pass him by. It is my job to keep him from doing so... replied Luceth, settling comfortably. And the opportunity to meet you and Yours was indeed an opportunity we should not have missed. The small blue did indeed seem rather interested, pleased by the company he had gained.
