This was a pretty serious level. Quinn prided himself with being able to solve problems and therefore work through puzzles in games, but he was feeling so off that he just couldn't get through this one. Between the weird noises and all of the hushed whispers, he was beginning to worry. Thankfully, there hadn't been anything that he'd directly witnessed so far, but he was wary. This was the stuff of creepy monster games.
He squirmed in the study room chair, frustrated, as if positioning himself with his back on the seat cushion and his legs splayed in the air would really help him through this puzzle.
"Come onnnn," he hissed at the DS, shaking it just slightly. He was definitely one of those gamers that had trouble knowing when to step away - without his mother here to gently remind him that it was really time to let the game go for a while, he oftentimes went way, way past that point.
It was a good thing the study room on this floor was relatively empty tonight. If he'd seen himself, he would have been highly embarrassed. And he couldn't in good conscience blame his mom for indirectly filling him with shame, since he was only out of his room following her suggestion.

Serenade, on the other hand, was a failure at gaming.
She was starting to wonder how good those who had gone into Barren Pines with this as their gift were, though there still remained a bit of doubt as to why Barren Pines would admit them. It was fun and challenging yes, but it just wasn't in the same league as something like the arts, the theater, the music! Still, she thought those few were pretty skilled, ever since she picked up gaming for the sake of listening to cool game soundtracks. She had however, tried other games as well, those which had looked cute, such as Scribblenauts.
At first, it was easy. Then, as the number of stars signifying the difficulty increased, Serenade could only stare at the dual screen and wonder what in the world was she supposed to summon. She was terribly uncreative in this area. After a while, she gave up, put her DS in her bag and headed to the study room to do some homework.
She seated beside Quinn, and quirked an eyebrow at what he was playing. "It's hard, isn't it?" She asked him softly, wrinkling her nose. "I...i'm not very good at being creative in puzzle games."

The only notice he initially gave to her was a quick glance out of the corner of his eye, and that was only to be sure that he wasn't being ambushed by a mutated vampire. Satisfied when he didn't see her dripping in blood or toxic waste or whatever else there might be, he simply went back to his game, continuing to ignore her as she sat next to him.
It wasn't until she spoke directly to him that he simultaneously realized two horrors: a girl was talking to him, and he was sitting like a weirdo.
He could feel his cheeks reddening immediately as he righted himself in the chair. How absolutely humiliating. He kept his head tilted down towards the DS, though it was going ignored, hoping that his blush would be covered by his long, silver hair. "I, uh. Well, this level kind of is...usually I'm pretty good at this kind of stuff, but my mind's not in the right place right now." It was a good thing he'd caught himself before he blurted out that he felt he was losing his touch. That was something he would never admit aloud. Unless he was being tortured, he amended - everything was a possibility then.
Taking the risk that his face was back to its normal, pale state, he looked up at her and was immediately taken aback. Wow, he needed to get out of his room more often. She was pretty, like she'd just walked out of a Final Fantasy game.

His strange sitting position didn't seem to faze the girl one bit, she simply smiled pleasantly at him. She was about to turn her attention to what she had came here for, fingers almost about to pick up her pen and start on an assignment, when he replied and she turned, blinking at him. "I usually...have to resort to walkthroughs." She confided to him softly, looking rather abashed. "I'm amazed at how people can actually solve those tricky ones!"
Bottom line was, she sucked, and she thought he was pretty amazing for being good at it already.

Judging by the materials she brought with her, she probably had come here to study. Quinn usually would have just let her be, since studying was pretty serious business, but she'd just admitted to him that she resorted to walkthroughs. More than once in her life.
And that was going to require an intervention.
"You can definitely do it without the walkthroughs - sometimes you just have to step back and think about it for a while. And then your power light...uh. No. The idea lightbulb comes on, and you realize what you were missing the whole time." Arguably the worst pep talk ever, but he'd tried. "What other games do you play? That sort of thing works well for puzzle games like Scribblenauts or Professor Layton, but I can give you some tips for RPGs or FPS games."
He set his DS down, worried that he was taking the wrong approach to being helpful. She hadn't actually asked, after all. "I mean, if you want me to."

"It's really really hard though." Serenade wrinkled her nose, which was accompanied by a pout. "Sometimes I think about it too much, then give up and do something else. Then I go back to it, but I just stare at it all the same." At least she was lucky classes weren't as complex as some of the puzzles she had attempted to solve; or her grades would start slipping. And that would be horrifying.
"Um." She said. "I want to try some of the Final Fantasy games, but there are so many!" Plus they were on different consoles, and Serenade couldn't possibly try them all; she wasn't about to lose valuable practice time on games. She had wanted to try one at a time, but it was really, really hard to choose. "I'd love that, really." She assured him. "If you uh, don't mind teaching a beginner."

Perhaps Quinn had more faith in her than she did in regards to her game-playing ability, but he thought that with a little practice, she wouldn't need the assistance of walkthroughs at all. He certainly didn't want to insist this to someone he'd only just met, so he'd just have to test that theory sometime in the far future.
"Yeah, there are a whole ton of them," he said with a laugh. "You don't have to start at the beginning of the series though, if you don't want to. Maybe you'll miss a reference every now and then about the lifestream or Sephiroth or something, but mostly you can play them by themselves. I have ten and ten-two if you want to borrow them, and I can help if you get stuck. I mean, we're all noobs at some point."
The realization that he'd called her a noob, which had a high possibility of being offensive, unfortunately never came.

She listened to him wide-eyed, as though he was some sort of guru, which, in Serenade's mind, he was. He was definitely more experienced in this area than she was, and it was good that at least, she didn't need to resort to asking Lucas for game tips. Jess had told her Lucas, well...liked to touch girls inappropriately, and that was all she had to say for Serenade to decide to stay away from the boy.
"I'll just borrow one at a time then." She smiled. "I really would appreciate help! I don't know how well I'd do in fighting games." A game with great music! She was excited, and overlooked his comment about being a noob. Besides, she didn't really understand what that term meant.
