Static
Prologue

They say that I should be thankful that I'm still here, though I'm not quite sure why. They say I have a gift. But if that's true, then why am I hunted? My name is Alexander Ravencraft. Odd name, I know. But I chose if for myself, and I like it. Let me start in the beginning, with my birth. Please note that I am on the run, so this part may be a little scratchy.

The reason they say I should be thankful is that I died once, before I was even born. Let me explain. When I was still in the womb, my mother was in a car crash at 2 months pregnant. Thankfully this is the year 2045 and they have some fairly advanced technology. They were able to bring me back for a short few hours...but it was too late for her. Thankfully, in a weird coincidence, the other family was trying to make a kid of their own, but were unable. So with our technology, they were able to take me out, and put me in the womb of the wife. This is the weird part. My body was so young and vulnerable then that the defibrillator not only brought me back, but also altered how my cells work, and effected me on a molecular level.

This alteration allowed me to be able to conduct static 700% more efficiently than any other human. When it comes to the cellular part, my cells can use my body's natural current, from the nervous system, and the static I absorb, so I control the electricity on a minor level. Meaning that I can fire it in a strait line, run it through the ground to stun someone, and I can destroy electronics quite easily.

My family, the ones who birthed and raised me, new of these powers. They protected me from the media, police, government, everyone that would just make my life harder. But, I guess it was inevitable for someone to find out about my “powers.” The government had gotten word of it from an anonymous source, and started to hunt me. I had to leave my family, my home, my friends, everything, all at the age of thirteen. They stormed the house, killed my birth mother, and arrested my father. So you see, these are the people we elected to do what's best for us. But then the turn around and use their power to try and capture me, just so they can run some sick tests, and experiments. Sorry, I'm getting a little off track. As I said before, I'm on the run, from the government. So far I have been able to get away without having to kill anyone. Though that's not to say that I haven't knocked a few people out with a quick jolt. Two years have passed since then and...I can't go on, I can hear them coming down the hall.

Chapter 1: A Boy With A Gift

I was curled up in the oven of an abandoned house. Not the most comfortable hiding spot for a 15 year old, I know. But you get over that fact when you are running for your life. I waited, hoping that they couldn't hear my heavy breathing. One problem, I was getting nervous, using more oxygen. I would suffocate if I stayed here much longer. I needed to think of a new place to dash to and hide. I slowly opened the door after I heard the footsteps fade down the hall and into a room when I suddenly heard a deep voice roar through the room. “There he is” a hidden voice bellowed. I raised my arms and held them out, my palms facing the direction the voice came from. I formed two orbs of pure electricity in my hands, my hair floating a little from the static, if not just for dramatic effect. I let out a roar of my own and slammed my hands to the ground and sent a wave of power through the ground, heard a scream, and then a thud.

One down, but I wander how many there were. I heard what sounded like three different foot step patterns. I formed two new orbs in my hands and walked to the entrance to the hall. I crouched next to the entrance, making sure that I couldn't be seen. When the foot steps got close enough I put my hands on the wall and sent a shock through the whole hall, ceiling, walls, everything. I heard more screams and thuds. But then a new sound. It was a beeping. I peeked around the corner and saw a flashing red light with a timer on it. The timer counted down from 20, When it reached 10 it bounced high in the air, almost hitting the ceiling and hovered for a second. “Well that's new.” I said aloud, amazed at it. When the timer hit zero, nothing. Nothing at all. Suddenly I heard a low thud, and a sharp pain. I collapsed, it was an EMP bomb, probably triggered by a sudden rise in electrical activity.

I work like a computer, or any other electronic device. Electricity is my friend. Magnets, not so much. I was completely unable to move, totally stunned. I heard a voice come on over one of the agent's earphones. They had me. They voice said in a mocking tone “We finally have you, I personally can't believe the EMP worked. Each of those agents you took down all have a GPS locater. We have sent an extraction team to pick you up. Have a nice trip.” The voice cut out, and I slowly fell unconscious.

I awoke in a daze, and was moving. We were in a helicopter. I could hear the gyro turning, feel the vibrations that are unique to them. I raised my head, only to have it slammed back to the ground by a heavy boot. “Don't try anything, you little brat,” said the owner of the boot. “Your 'special powers' are still suppressed from that little gift we had for you.” I was beet, done for. One moment of carelessness had done me in. How could I have been so stupid? And he was right, I couldn't generate any electricity. All I could do was just close my eyes, ignore the boot on my head, and let the hum of the choppers engines put me back to sleep.

Chapter 2:Nightmares

I have the same dream ever time I close my eyes. I see my mother and father, sitting at the dinner table. We are laughing, actually having fun. It's of the thanksgiving before my parents were murdered by the people we elected to be our leaders. We eat, me and my dad watch the football game while my mother does the dishes. It's a normal, all-American Thanksgiving. After the game time fast forwards, it's Christmas. As I sit up, I run downstairs and see through the window someone looking in the house from across the street. I didn't know back then that it was one of the agents I would soon after put in a hospital. But, we had a good, still normal, Christmas

No one other than my parents knew of my power, I suspect that's why they wouldn't believe us when I tried to report future events to the police. After school starts back up I live the life of a normal, as normal of a life I can live at least, teen of the year 2058. I enjoyed life, I enjoyed my powers. Then, the dream skips to the Friday of the first week back from school. I see four men carrying my father into a van, and I hear a gunshot followed by the screams of my mother in pain. As I frantically run to my house I see the man I saw on Christmas run out of the house, carrying a gun. In reality I hit him a jolt of electricity. But, in this twisted nightmare, I can do nothing. All I can do is run into the house and hold my dying mother in my arms as she breathes her last breath.

That happened two years ago. I am now fifteen, and a lot wiser. I have learned how to evade these monsters, until now that is. I awaken in a cell. I am in white cotton clothes, no shoes. I can tell by the texture of the floor on my feet, and by how smooth the walls look, and not to mention a little common sense, that the whole room has a layer of rubber over the walls, floor, ceiling, except for the wall with the cell door. That whole wall is made of glass, probably Plexiglas actually. I stand and stumble over to the nearly invisible wall. I can see the faces of others, could they possibly be like me? I can't worry about that now, I need to think of a way to escape.

After about three hours of wandering around the cell, inspecting every corner and crease, I come to a conclusion. There is no getting out of here. At least the rubber on the floor makes the ground almost like on giant bed. I lay down and stare at the ceiling. It's gray, smoke gray. It's smooth and has a chalk look to it. Then again, the whole room is like that, except for, of coarse, the wall with my way out. I almost fall asleep again, this time probably into a coma from lack of food.

As I lay there I hear footsteps through the little holes made in the Plexiglas wall. I lean up on one shoulder and see a group of men in solid black walking to my cell. The open the door and I slowly stand. The men pull out a small brown bag, a MRE, Meal Ready to Eat. They are cheap and used by the military, so they have proven to give all nutrients that a normal person needs to live. They gave me two. One of them smiled, I could see his face muscles change under the black rubber mask. He said in a disgustingly creepy voice, “Eat up, you're gonna need the energy. Here's some advice, do your best in the test. Not only is it life or death, but I also a few hundred bucks riding on you.” After the statement he flipped the switch on a small device on his wrist. I heard the hum of a machine, the whine of a small antenna coming out of it, about 2 inches long. All of a sudden, WHAM. I felt the surge of a small EMP hit me. I collapsed and curled into a ball, no doubt a way to break my spirit. I should expect more of those.

As I awoke I slowly rose to a sitting position and tried think. As I sat there I noticed that another pair of men came down the hallway and opened another cell. They slowly pulled a kid, an albino, and looked about twelve. They slowly walked him down the hallway and around a corner, then they were gone. I sat there, trying to figure out what they were going to do with him. He must have some special ability or skill like myself, otherwise they probably wouldn't have him held here. After about ten minutes they came back and took another person out of a cell. It was a man this time, looking around twenty-five.

I laid there, thinking about what they might be doing with the two them. I had a feeling they weren't letting them go. After what I guessed to be an hour, but what was probably really only forty-five minutes, only the kid came back. He had blood on his cheek, but I couldn't see any scratches, scrapes, or anything. One of them gave the kid a pat on the shoulder, and the kid let out a slight grin. The men then turned and made their way to my cell.

The bigger of the two opened the door, while the other kept watch. He grabbed my shoulder and with a disturbing grin told me to come with him. I complied, not having any electricity to hit him with. He led me out of the cell and the second guy shut the door behind us and followed around that same corner that they took the boy and man down. As we walked down the hallway I noticed there was a few more cells down this hallway, and a chute with a lot of heat coming form it. In the cells there were monitors, knives, syringes, and other medical looking tools setting around the cell in random places. They lead me through a giant steel door.

Chapter 3: The Neogladiators

Through those giant doors was a dome like area, with a lower level in the center. There was no way in other than a platform that looked like an elevator, but without the sides or roof. They led me to the platform and pushed me on. As I stood on the platform it moved slowly down to the center and a giant T.V screen lowered from the ceiling. On the screen was the silhouette of a man. He leaned forward in his chair and held his hand out. “Welcome, to the Neo-Coliseum. This, is were your abilities, and your will, will be tested. You will fight one round every day, and it is a fight to the death. If you happen to win, then you will be taken back to your cell and given one food, and one drink of your choice. Now then, bring out the second combatant.” They brought out another person. Only this time it was a girl.

She walked to the platform and and was lowered into the field. She didn't even wait for it to get half way down before just jumping off. She strolled to the center of the arena and half crouched. She had a huge grin on her face, and in that grin weren't normal teeth, but the teeth of something like a cat, and a big one at that. I looked down at her hands, which were open, palms facing me, with nails that were thick and yellow, not so much like a cat anymore, but a dog. The man came back over the intercom and exclaimed two simple words, “Go to!” That apparently meant fight since the girl lunged at me and raked me right side with her nails and tried to bite my throat, probably going after the jugular. I barely had time to react to the bite and lost my balance, slipping just a little.

I regained my balance and noticed, after dodging another swipe, that her clothes were made of a finer material than mine. Cotton! I lunged and tackled her, and held her hands down to her side. I left her just a little room to move, which she used to try and wiggle free. She was falling right into my trap. I gathered up the static she was making until, WHAM! She had pulled her legs between us and kicked me off of her. I put my middle finger and thumb together and pulled them apart slowly, noticing the miniature lightning between the two. It wasn't much, but it was still enough to put down a full grown man for a good hour.

I dodged another swipe, which I was getting quite good at doing, and grabbed her wrist. Using her momentum against her, I spun her around and pulled her into somewhat of a hug before sending all of my gathered electricity through her body. She went limp, and I slowly lowered her to the ground.

The voice came back over the intercom, “CONGRATULATIONS! You have survived round one. Let us dispose of your competitor no-.” I had to cut in, “BUT SHE ISN”T DEAD! WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU!?”

The voice came back, “She has proven to be weak, and we can only use the strongest and fastest of our army in our quest.”

“An army?”

“Yes, if you survive, and rise through the ranks. Then maybe, just maybe, you can have some freedoms. But until then, good night, Alexander.” With those last words it felt like I was hit with a bat right between the shoulder blades. Another EMP charge? No, this one didn't leave me weak, and rippled through my body more fluidly. As I collapsed, I could see the figure of a small person. A boy, based on the body structure. The last thing I heard before falling into the abyss was the laughter of a child. I looked up to see a small boy, pale as a full moon. Ice eyes, and hair almost as pale as his skin.

Chapter 4: Sigma

“GET UP!” I felt a boot connect with my ribs. I slowly sat up, “Who do you think you are, you little br-.” Wrong choice in words. Before I could finish the word my face slammed into the concrete floor, the inside of his knee against the back of my neck. He flexed his leg muscles and easily cut off the blood flow to my brain. Things started to go gray, then dark. The child loosened his grip and my vision slowly came back. I slowly sat up and took a deep breath. “Sorry.”

The child simply stared at me, a disturbing amount of hatred in his eyes. He glared into mine for a few seconds before muttering, “Ten and a third seconds, and I already hate you,” that confirmed it. “I have been instructed to train you in the ways of hand-to-hand combat. I am the best, a natural fighter. The PERFECT fighter. My night vision is enhanced by my inability to go into the sun for long. I have been taught to not feel pain. I'm also a prodigy, I can read five hundred eighty nine words a minute, and have the contents memorized as I read them.”

“So then, how did you end up in a place like this?”

“That information is none of your concern at the moment.”

“Okay, then.” I looked around the room, noticing a small T.V and an actually comfortable looking bed. “So how did you get all of this?” The child looked at me, and I could see a little pride...behind all of the hatred. “I am a Colonel in SATAAS.”

I just stared at him, amazed that this kid is a Colonel of anything, other than some toy army men. “Can I have a couple of questions?” The boy looked at me for a second, “You may.”

“What does 'SATAAS' stand for?”

“Specialty Assault Tactician And Assassination Squad.”

“So, what do you all do?”

“Whatever The Ring Leader tells us to do.”

“And what does that usually pertain to?

“We are SATAAS, the answer is in our name.”
“...Okay then. One last question. What is your name?”

“My name...is Sigma.”

Strange name, though no stranger than my own.

Chapter 5: Ten Years Later

I have been a part of SATAAS for eight years, there was a 2 year initiation. Sigma has trained me well in the ways of assassination, battle tactics, and has also helped me control my powers. I no longer have to have a medium to send my bolts through, nothing but the air. I also now have a new name, Epsilon, and am also a Colonel and am treated like an equal. Apparently, all of us..."Specials," or people with the most powerful names, are given a name based off of some dead language's, called the Greeks who were apparently highly superior to their surroundings.

Supposedly, the most powerful of us, has the name Omega. Sigma hates this, since he thinks it's too cliche', and that he should actually be the most powerful. They say Omega has the, get this, Omega ability. Also known as the ability to end all.We don't know how, or why he has the ability. We haven't even so much as seen him before. Sigma said told me that Omega was supposedly, "just some old guy who has more experience." I'm not sure if I believe that.

Sigma also, though as battle hardened as he is, has a heart. He care for very little, but it's still there. He also has a since of humor and is sometimes the comic relief of our group. The others of our group are Upsilon, who is my partner and has tremendous upper body strength; Zeta, who is Sigma's partner, and has the ability of extremism. Extremism means that he naturally doesn't fell temperatures, and as a bonus, isn't normally effected by them. Then you have Sigma, who you already know. Gamma, who absorbs radiation, which is helpful in today's chemical and nuclear warfare. And, lastly, Omega and his hidden power.

We are all colonels in "The Army." Our first mission was right after I became a group of The Specials. We went to Russia, which is REALLY cold during the winter. The mission was over in a couple of hours. Gamma simply absorbed any radiation they fired at us and walked into the base, killing everyone on contact. Sigma ran in, wearing an environmental suit to keep the radiation out, breaking arms and necks. I killed the cameras, and Upsilon through rocks the size of golf carts at the walls of the base just to piss them off even more. They even tried to freeze Zeta, who just walked up and bear-hugged the ice-gunners, burning them with all the cold. All and all, it was actually fun. And I finally feel like I have another family.
