So, I started wondering this when I was watching one of the many paranormal shows. Almost every paranormal show investigates an asylum at some point. So I got to wondering... Someone with a mental illness dies, and their spirit lives on or haunts a place, not counting residual hauntings do you think the spirit would still display signs of the mental illness, or since they left the physical body would they be free from any behavior or symptoms they might have displayed in life?
I wonder because I see more about the physical appearance than what the mental condition could be after death. That and I noticed when watching the shows that they go for EVPs, but if the spirit is still stuck with the mental illness the person had in life wouldn't it make it harder to make contact? And if you did make contact how would you know they aren't unintentionally screwing with the results?
Has anyone seen any theories on this? Or have any ideas of their own?

Hmm...I find this question very interesting. (I think I spent 15 minutes staring at the screen thinking about it.) But in my opinion I think they would retain most of their illness but keep enough sanity to know very roughly what's going on.

Maybe. I think anything could be possible. .-. I mean there are stories about people who have passed from accidents and they appear fine. They have no wounds and they aren't disfigured or anything. Then there are stories about people who look bloody or are missing body parts and such. Maybe it goes either way.

Hm...What if if/when or whatever you turn (Err...Tranform?) into a ghost you get a choice of whether or not you want to keep your wounds, I would keep my wounds..Maybe that's because of my blood fetish(?). +__+

Well if it hurt I wouldn't want to be roaming around moaning about being in pain. It'd be like being old...
Picture an afterlife knitting circle with a bunch of spirits all "Damn arthritis! You'd think I'm still alive!" Haha...
I don't know. If I had an awesome gory look without being in pain I might, but it depends on if there are people still alive I'd want to make contact with. I wouldn't want to freak them out all the time. ;D

I think it has more to do with the energy imprinted on asylums than anything else. Whether you're mentally ill or not, I'm sure asylums are among the worst places to have to be. All the depression and sickness could possibly be drawing OTHER spirits that feed on these energies. So maybe its not the crazies at all.
In my opinion there's a lot of confusion involved with being dead and being an apparition. Its probably a lot harder to understand if your mind wasn't all there. I could see that as a reason someone might get stuck there. But my thought still goes back to the level of unhappiness associated with asylums and how people die there.

Well the asylum thing was just something that sparked my question... I'm talking about a spirit of a mentally ill person in general, not exactly in an asylum. I'm also sort of asking about people who suffer from mental retardation and certain kinds of birth defects. Basically anything that impairs the mind at all.
The asylum thing though... I agree about the negative energy. The extreme highs and lows people have, the mood and temperament changes. That and if the place had any abuse or neglect going on...
If adolescent girls and teens draw things, you gotta wonder about people who are bipolar or have similar problems.
The paranormal shows I mentioned still do EVP work and treat it like it would be an intelligent haunting, which is why I wondered about what kind of results you'd get. They ask questions like "were you a patient here? Did you stay in this room?" and such it always seems like they assume it's a patient and not something drawn to the energy.
Everyone has different opinions regarding what a ghost, haunting, and a spirit is and depending on the view there are completely different theories as to the behavior or events it would play out.

Honesty, I do think it does have something to do with it. I think certain things come with the territory. I mean, most bi-polar and schizophrenic people I know are artists of some sort, most famous artists had some sort of mental illness. I know that has nothing to do with "ghosts" but like I said, I think certain things come with it, I guess being mentally ill has it's "gifts". lol I'm bi-polar and I've seen "stuff" all my life. Not all of it good, but I'm glad I get to have these experiences. So yeah, I do think it might have something to do with it.

A friend of mine had this theory that if they had any kind of impairment that it could open them up to other things like spirits. It's kind of similar to how people believe children can see things because of their innocence and such.
I have a history of mental illness in my family and maybe that's made us all way more sensitive to things because I'm not the only one in my family who has had experiences with the paranormal. Haha, it seems like a lot of artists suffered from something or just acted strangely.
