Bathed in the gentle glow of the full moon's light, Unagi stood on the southern beach of Kyushu, watching as the waves gently receeded and then returned to the shore mere feet away from his paws. The sound of the waves breaking against the nearby rocks was surprisingly calming, along with the pleasantly cool night air; he'd napped here earlier in the day when he'd found most of Masao's party to be annoying, but especially Shobanichi and Suzuki who were incessantly chattering about the exotic wild flowers. He'd come back once the sun had set because like his mother, he'd learned that the ocean had indescribable beauty and that he was drawn to it.
It was here that he had decided to wait for his younger brother Vidar, who was going to be joining him for a late night stroll.
Unagi had greatly been looking forward to this ever since he'd come up with the idea; it had been several days since he'd had time to interact with his brother alone. The large group of Kuniku had done most of their traveling across the island together, which meant that at least one or two sets of ears could happen to be listening in on a private conversation. To Unagi, his relationship with his family was the strongest and the most important. His mother seemed to be getting closer to Masao and that was brightening her spirits, so the only thing left to do was to check up on his little brother. The two had always been close, even when Vidar had decided from an early age that he would mainly communicate through body language. It was because of this reason however, that he had decided to ask Vidar to walk with him.
There had always been something... something different about Vidar that Unagi could hardly name. Perhaps it was the fact that the darker colored male pursued knowledge instead of physical power that he caused Unagi to inwardly worry that something might be going on that Vidar wasn't telling him about. There wasn't anything in particular that Unagi could think of that might trouble his brother, other than the fact that he had to leave that 'little blue girl' behind on Honshu, but surely she wasn't so important to Vidar..? "Ah, whatever." he snorted, tapping the tip of his tail against the sand. Whether Vidar had gained feelings for someone or not, it didn't matter. Unagi knew that he'd always have a special place in his brother's heart that no one else could touch, and it was the same reverberated.
Despite the sound of the waves, his ears flicked backwards as he heard the sound of bushes being pushed apart. Oh, that must be him coming now! Unagi turned to face the jungle, tail wagging with pleasure as he awaited the appearance of Vidar.

Alone in the darkness for the second time that week, an incredibly camouflaged Kuniku padded slowly through the forest, having his sights set on the beach where he knew his older brother would be waiting for him. Unagi, the fearless one. Fearless. Like Vidar had been only so long ago. Fearless, uncaring, proud... No emotional ties, but to his family. A little blue female had changed all of that for him. And though he knew he was going to have a wonderful walk with his beloved sibling who awaited his arrival on the beach, Vidar couldn't stop thinking about how he had just left Chishiki behind--no--how he had left a beautiful future with her behind... All for what?
For what?
The question echoed in his head like a broken record, and stung him to the very core, making the curled green and black glass necklace weigh heavy around his neck. Somewhere in the back of his mind, a little voice screamed, "I told you so," at the hurt the attachment to Chishiki had brought him, but V would have none of that. He had said that one day he would return to her, and he was going to keep to that promise, no matter what. With his spirits lifted just that much more by the thought of seeing the petite Kuniku again, Vidar pressed through the rest of the trees, able to hear the ocean much more clearly now. The moon had lit the beach beautifully, and Vidar couldn't help but feel a stab of pain at how happy and content Unagi looked when he finally spotted his brother. To be honest, he was a little jealous. But no matter, V would not show anything but joy to his brother tonight.
Skirting around the edge of the waves as they rolled in, Vidar sat a healthy amount away from the water, having not forgotten his last experience with the incredible ocean. Having been almost drowned was not going to erase itself from his memory easily. No, V was almost afraid that he would never be able to enjoy the full beauty of the body of water ever again because of that damned Kunifish.
And though he was quite honestly even a bit afraid to be this close to the ocean, there was nothing Vidar wouldn't do for Unagi. He had chosen the beach tonight, and so the younger Kuniku would comply without a second thought. With a small, albeit troubled smile spread across his lips, the darker greeted the lighter, swishing his tail silently across the sand. "Big Brother," his low voice near-whispered as he touched his nose gently to the laying Kuniku's forehead. "Are you ready for our walk?"

With ease, a pleasant laugh escaped from Unagi's maw as Vidar approached. "You bet I am!" he replied, grinning from spotted cheek to cheek. Finally, now he and Vidar could talk about whatever they wanted! Ah, but then again, where should he start the conversation..?
Nagi stood, shaking lightly to remove the sand from his thick fur. He of course wanted to find out how Vidar was doing, but he didn't want to make Vidar think that he was constantly being worried over either. His golden eyes looked around, searching for something to talk about that would give the beginning of the walk a light and peaceful mood... He found it by looking up at the moon shining brightly above. "It's beautiful, isn't it?" The question didn't really require an answer, but Nagi commented anyway. With the stars twinkling as well, the night sky really was something to admire tonight. "Can't even remember the last time it was this clear out." Unagi admittedly was forgetful, but things of beauty usually did have a lasting impression in his mind. Perhaps this sight was one of the reasons why they had left Honshu in the first place?
Knowing that Vidar would follow after him, he began a slow walk forward. He had no real destination in mind, but that didn’t matter. Unagi never got lost, ever. Somehow it was almost as if he had internal compass that would always take him back to his mother’s side no matter how far away from her he decided to travel. With that nameless bit of reassurance, he was confident that they’d make their way back to the camp with very little trouble even if they walked for hours.

((Just gonna go ahead and skip to the scene we've all been waiting for...))
It was here he stood at the base of this moonlit waterfall, long back turned to his eldest brother. It had been that one, simple statement that sent his whole world rocking. 'Maybe we're just not meant to know everything all at once, Vidar. There's a reason, y'know, but we just haven't discovered it yet.' No. This was not the truth. The thoughts and images that had been bubbling inside of his mind were finally released in the form of words that could never be unsaid.
"The world is such a miserable place, Big Brother..." The youngest male's voice was low and dark as he began. "It's full of untouchable knowledge... Beautiful, sacred knowledge that is only attainable through much horrible sacrifice. There is only so much that the Good-Hearted can learn... Or even dare to." Vidar took a deep breath and removed his gaze from the distorted view of his reflection, moving his eyes up to the top of the rushing water as it fell over the cliff. His voice became much more deadly as he continued.
"But what if, what if, Big Brother, a single Heart dared to step out of line? What if that Heart stood up to the Gods and crossed that proverbial river keeping us from that knowledge? Just imagine what the world could learn from such a simple step..! All the walls we previously thought existed would disappear, and it would open a floodgate to unimaginable wisdom. Wisdom that the Gods so selfishly hid from us... All of our questions would be answered." Finally turning to face Unagi, the brother he adored so much... The one he tried his hardest for... The one he would give his life to... Vidar's violet eyes were the only things seen from his dark outline against the crystal waterfall. This would be his desperate plea for his brother to listen. V could not stop speaking. He had to let it all out, now that this was in motion. He himself was like that very waterfall.
"Big Brother, I crave this intelligence from my very core. I need to know everything... I want to shed light on all of Nippon... Even if it takes me forever and a day. Even if I have to defy every law the Gods have set for us. The reward is more than worth the risk. Big Brother, now is the time to defy our preconceived rules... We, as the Gods' advocates have the right to know everything they do... And everything they had never foreseen."
Desperate now, Vidar pressed closer to his lighter-furred brother, touching his maw to the soft feathers adorning his sibling's strong chest.
"Come with me and learn, Unagi. We have the chance, so come and take it with me. The door of opportunity is open now, and it won't stay that way forever. Help me give Nippon the taste of the forbidden fruit."

A widening of eyes, quickened pulse, and near absence of breath were the first of Unagi's responses to Vidar's revelation. What the hell..? His eyes slowly lowered to look down at the top of the head pressed to his chest affectionately, and for the first time in his life, Unagi was feeling the beginnings of fear. The unbreakable Kuniku who knew no limits was becoming afraid, and of the one who stood before him that he called family.
Swallowing, but nearly choking on the faint traces of oxygen that managed to travel to his lungs, Unagi uttered "What the hell are you talking about, Vidar?" There was no anger, just confusion and a shakiness that was unprecedented in Unagi's voice. He didn't understand, he couldn't... Why did Vidar want to know so much? Without thinking, Unagi performed the most regrettable action of his entire life; he stepped away from Vidar.
"You can't do that, Vidar... That's crazy." Unagi attempted to give one of his usual, effortless laughs but there was no sound. Emptiness poured out of his mouth, but his eyes told the truth. The pair of gold revealed that he couldn't handle this. It wasn't from a lack of intelligence, but rather a difference in morals that had drawn the invisible line that now divided the two; he could care less about the reasonings behind things. "None of that matters! Who cares why the sun comes up every day? It just does, and it will again tomorrow. That's all we need to know to be satisfied. Just be happy with the way things are, Vidar." Unagi couldn't look his younger brother in the face. While he spoke, countless questions came up in his mind about both himself and Vidar. Was there any way this could just be a dream? Why was this happening at all? Could he have done something to prevent this senseless darkness in Vidar? "If the Gods wanted us to know, they would have said something..." Unagi wanted to say anything that could make his brother just stop talking and go home. He could forget about all of this, maybe. He'd certainly lie to their mother in order to keep her from knowing about this... illness.
"What're you gonna do? You can't steal words and things from the Gods. That doesn't make any sense! Kuniku aren't supposed to be jealous of others, like some kind of a de--" Unagi's eyes widened further as he stopped himself from finishing that word. Oh, Gods, no. He was not about to call his own flesh and blood a demon. He wasn't thinking straight, that must be it! Neither of them were thinking straight right now. As he searched for the words to make an apology for nearly calling Vidar the most abominable creature in existence, he could feel somewhere deep down that after this, things would never be the same between him and his little brother.
