That had gone... as well as any audition could go, really. He was a veteran actor, but couldn't help but get nervous upon walking in to read something for the first time. Trace shut the auditorium door quietly behind him and paused at the water fountain in the lobby - he always got thirsty when he was nervous.

He'd noticed Evie auditioning before he left, and wondered what that was about. Didn't she only do musicals? Oh well, go figure. He bent down to take a drink of water and decided not to think about it too long.

He'd have to talk to her later. Maybe. He was still angry with her. But mostly he was angry about cats.

Cold water tasted good after a tough audition.

Evie was pretty sure she'd done well in the audition. Acting wasn't her thing, but she was pretty sure she'd done well? She had done well, right? Evie hesitated for a moment as she was walking down the stairs as a moment of panic gripped her, but it soon passed. No. She had done just fine. She was probably only getting jittery because that one rude guy had auditioned for her. But that was okay. She had done okay. There was nothing, absolutely nothing, for her to stress out about.

She saw Trace's silhouette in the threshold of the doorway outside of the auditorium, and she broke into a light jog, waving to try and get his attention. However, it was only after she had left the auditorium itself that she spoke--after all, it was rude to interrupt someone's audition, even if she did hear snippets of the monologue she had just performed and that meant competition.

There was nothing for her to stress out about.

"Trace! Trace! Did you see my audition?" Again, she waved as she jogged up to the place beside him, beaming with all smiles and tugging at her sleeves with excitement. "I didn't sing or anything, it'll just be an acting play like you like!" There was no way that she was trying to appease the boy in some way. No way whatsoever.

Trace stood up and wiped water from his lips. He smiled slightly, but not too much. She had been working with Mason behind his back, after all. "Hey, Evie," he said, shoving his hands in his pockets.

"Yeah," he said, not quite as enthusiastic as he should have been. "You were good."

This was probably more underwhelming a response than she had been hoping for. "It was good," he said again, trying to assure her that he really meant It Really Was Good, and not just I Am Telling You It Was Good To Shut You Up.

"An acting play?" he asked, raising an eyebrow at her. "And what do you call musicals?"

Trace was right: the first 'It was good' was not enough, and the color began to drain from Evie's face, wondering if she really had done something wrong. But the second one seemed more reassuring, and put her more at ease. Trace would have told her if she'd done something wrong, she decided. She was just still a little jumpy after her near-encounter with Sue. Why did that guy have to be such a jerkface?

"Musicals have singing and dancing," she said with a whimsical twirl, "And there's always the best music!" She pulled his hand free from his pocket and twirled again, as if she'd been transported to some sort of fantasy land. Maybe she was in some fantasy land: it made no difference to her. The fact that Trace was talking to her in more than one sentence already put her in a better mood.

"What made you choose Kevin?" She asked as she completed the twirl, looking up at him with a curious gaze. "You didn't want the part of the main man?"

"I chose Kevin because I am angry," announced Trace, looking smug as he spun her. "I am angry about cats."

"You see," he explained, "I live next door to Sue. And Mr. Kitty-Litter-for-Brains smells like cat. Always. Forever. Now, his hygiene habits are none of my business, but it has begun to stink up my room. So I am angry. About cats."

This was a good explanation, he decided, and probably one she could appreciate.

"Sometimes," he added, "The best role isn't the lead one, anyway. Kevin seems like he'd be fun to play. I get enough serious parts in class."

He whistled something. It might have been Seasons of Love, but he was not very good at whistling.

Evie seemed to tense, her eyes furrowing with a much more real distress than the emotion she'd shown in the auditorium. Perhaps it was that she'd never spent much time around Trace's room, but she certainly hadn't known that he was stuck rooming next to him. "I don't like Sue either," she said ruefully, letting her hand slip away. "For a guy who likes to be so hateful about everyone else, you think he'd try to at least be clean."

She seemed to be amused by the next statement, however, for she laughed a little bit, even though her expression was confused. "I thought the best role was always the lead one. In musicals, you get the most songs to sing." Sub-consciously, she began to hum along to whatever the boy had been whistling, though she could only approximate at best with the notes he gave her, making it sound like something that could have been the remixed version of Seasons of Love. In a different key. In the back of her mind, she thought to correct it, but then it would throw Trace's whistling off, and then they wouldn't be in sync anymore. Evie liked it better when she simply compensated for other people's error.

"We're theater kids," said Trace seriously, and stopped whistling. "We should at least be able to get Seasons of Love right." If they were getting it wrong, he knew, it was his fault and not hers. Evie had perfect pitch.

"In musicals, yes," he agreed, "Then the lead is best. But in straight plays the supporting characters are more fun. You get Romeo, and you're pretty much playing a stock character. But Mercutio or Friar Lawrence or even Tybalt? Act well your part, there the honor lies!"

He said this with the sort of flare and pizzaz that, were he not a tall black kid in a prep school uniform that he looked thoroughly ridiculous in, would have certainly pegged him as some breed of queer.

"Let's not worry about the play," he said. "Our talent will shine through. Want to grab dinner? I know this dining hall where they make a mean grilled cheese."

Evie smiled as she watched Trace's little display, shaking her head. "You're a theater kid," she corrected, "I'm a chorus kid who would much rather have a backstory behind the lyrics." She hadn't thought herself as being quite that hungry, but at the mention of food she suddenly craved something warm to shoo away the crisp chill of autumn, and a trip to the dining hall began to sound phenomenal. Fabulous, even.

"A mean grilled cheese as in an awesome grilled cheese or as in something that will punch you in the gut so hard that you'll puke?" Evie suggested with a giggle, lightly stepping in the general direction towards the dining hall. As she began her walk, she started to hum the first few chords to her piece with Mason, Eponine's death scene from Les Mis. She hadn't practiced with him today, so she might as well keep it straight in her memory, she decided.

"That would depend on the alignment of the planets, I'm afraid," sighed Trace. "Some days it's delicious, some days it's food poisoning, and some day's it's both. The way I see it, if you're going to eat something that might kill you, it had might as well taste good." (He did not think this was tempting fate at all.)

"Les Mis, right?" he asked as they walked. "Why's that on your mind?"

He would like to play Javert one day if given the chance, so he knew the show fairly well. It seemed pretty unrelated to the context, though. (Like RENT hadn't been?)

Evie stopped humming at Trace's question, and tilted her head as if she was confused. "Didn't I tell you? I'm taking 'A Little Fall of Rain' to the District Festival with Mason. We're going to get superiors, and we might even get best in show." She put on her best 'I'm dying' face and looked up at Trace with sad, sweet eyes. Gently, she placed a hand on his chest.

"Don't you fret, Monsieur Marius, I don't feel any pain. A little fall of rain can hardly hurt me now..."

She paused for a moment, the last mournful note lingering on her tongue, and then she broke character, letting out an excited cheer. "Don't you think it will be wonderful? Mason's not the strongest voice at Pines by any means, but he's helping me with my acting, and he thinks we can take it to State!"

"Mason's a douche," said Trace, and pulled away. "You should have asked me. I could sing Marius better than him."

He walked ahead of her by a few paces. "Come on," he said. "Let's just go eat. It's getting cold out here."

At the very least, he had remembered why he was angry with her.
PostPosted: Mon Nov 09, 2009 10:11 pm

Evie hesitated, confused by the sudden brusque behavior in her friend. "Mason is not a douche, he's really chill, and you know that," she retorted, following behind him. "And besides, Mason asked me first. No one else asked me to do a duet." She let the implication of her last statement hang in the silence, even though she continued walk in step with him. By all accounts, she should have been offended at his rude behavior, but Evie liked Trace, she really did, and because of that she decided that there must have been some sort of confusion. She must have read the signals wrong.

Was that why Trace was so busy all of a sudden? Could he have been...avoiding her?

"You should've asked me," asserted Trace again. So what if Mason Who Was Still Definitely a Douche had asked her? It wasn't his fault she hadn't thought to ask him, her Best Theater Friend. Why wouldn't she ask him?

Oh. Wait. Maybe he should have asked before Mason Doucheface. Clearly, this was a failure of being assertive on his fault. Oh well. Trace heaved a mighty groan and looked down at her.

"Sorry," he said. "Maybe I wanted to do a duet with you."

Evie did her best to offer a sympathetic glance up at Trace, though it came across as being more concerned than anything, everything starting to fall into place. "Oh, Trace, I didn't even think about that..." she murmured, pouting as she wrapped her arms around him in a tight bear hug. "I thought you'd want to partner with someone who was a better actor. I didn't even think about that. I'm so sorry."

Pulling away, she tried to smile, even though she still looked and felt guilty. "We'll go get some grilled cheese and it'll all be okay, right?"

"Yeah," said Trace as they trudged through the growing dark. "Sounds like a plan to me."

He was still angry. Angry about cats. And Mason. But not about Evie. He could never manage to stay angry at her for very long. And Mason, either. Tomorrow things would probably be totally cool between them. But then again, you had to enjoy your bad moods and remember them for later when you were acting.
