Lately I've been doing some thinking... about what it would ACTUALLY be like to live in Japan (without taking into account of being an outsider). A while ago I was looking for anime stuff and I came across something called "hentai". MANY OF YOU MAY ALREADY KNOW WHAT THIS IS! Some clips I saw was really, how should I say, ODD. Seeing those particular cartoons got me wondering about what Japan is really like as far as what I'm not being told. Me, personally, I am naturally suspicious of almost everything which always leaves me thinking things like "There is something they are not telling me!" I always believe everything has something to hide, and Japan is no exception. So I started doing some in-depth searches on Japan and found this one webpage where it told about the "night-life" of Japan, where darkest and wierdest happenings took place. The page skimmed across the surface of many different thing about Japan, but mainly hit the fetishes of Japan. Things I found out were the oddest of things I ever saw in my life. And they even had names for all these fetishes. I won't name anything off for the sake of those that don't there vision of Japan shaken up, but what I found stirred my vision of Japan for LIFE! Point is Japan is not as innocent as many may think. I knew Japan had some urks and perks but my mindset has been blown to a whole 'nother level.

Glad to say that unless you go to the seedy areas, red-light or entertainment districts in Japan, then most of that strange stuff doesn't touch normal life here.
Kabuki-cho is probably most famous place for going-ons like what you are alluding to. Don't let it get you down about the rest of Japan. People do live normal lives here. Unless you want to hang out in Shibuya all the time or some other dirty city area with lots of seedy joints and people out all night, you won't come across the freaks, weirdos, *****, otakus, etc. Don't worry and don't loose your interest in Japan just because of the dirty side of it. Japanese could easily research the same things in America or any other country as well.
In the end, don't worry so much. wink

There are a lot of appealing things about Japan, but it is far from being a utopian society, they definitely have their own set of societal problems and hangups. You (phistarrhma) don't want to shake up the vision that others have of Japan, but I personally think it's important to see and understand Japan for what it is, rather than for what you think it is.

Hey, I happen to like Yuri and Hentai every once in a while. But I love anime so I'm going to have to run into it sometime eh? Besides, I already thought about life in Japan. Hell, It's peaceful. So little crime...

I've also been wondering... Apart from the fact that most Japanese people would probably treat you differently because you're a foreigner, isn't it really expensive to live there?

Neko Chen I've also been wondering... Apart from the fact that most Japanese people would probably treat you differently because you're a foreigner, isn't it really expensive to live there? Ugh, AWFULLY expensive. So expensive I practically spent all my money JUST for food. Couldn't afford anything else! Although around New Year's department stores have outrageous sales. eek

The cost of living in Japan depends on where you live. I live in a small city so rent is cheep and veggies and rice are also cheeper if you buy them at a farmers market. Now if your looking for Japanese Cd's....that's a different story.

It's interesting how people can look at something outside their normal area of living/thinking and judge it when the very same thing goes on all around them.
People get so immune to the "wrongs" in their own soceity but can see them clearly in someone else's. Everyone should take a few minutes to research their own country with the same style and voracity as other countries before they comment.
I bet if a Japanese person read about things that go in in NYC, LA, Las Vegas etc, they would be horrified. But that doesn't mean that living in America as a whole is even 1% similar.
You can find shocking/defiling/horrid things in every society. But because we look the other way in our own society, it has so much more impact when we are confronted with the same thing from the "outside".

I thoroughly enjoyed living in Japan. It was really hard for me to move back here... Yes, there are some odd things here and there... like over winter break there was a man who went onto our campus (it's an all girls school) and was smelling the gym shoes. He was arrested and they found that he had women's underwear on. Creepy, and another time when I visited Harajuku some guy came up and was practicing his english on me, and when he discovered how old I was, he shook my hand, leaned in like he was gonna kiss me on the cheek, then left. But there are people like that everywhere. I've seen far weirder people/places/happenings here in the US. *shrugs* Sure, there were some perverted magazines/comics in stores I visited, and some weirdos... but it's really just like any other place in the world. From the media we gather the worst about different countries. My host family thought that America would be a horrifying place to live.
And expenses... there is always hyaku en! xd As someone said, aside from CDs and clothes that aren't on sale... expenses are no higher than they are here in Hawaii so I didn't notice much of a change.

Heh. I read articles on the wilder side of Japan every once in a while, and I found out that there is some pretty crazy stuff (like Love Hotels). But there are weird things practically anywhere you go, it's not always going to be perfect. Also, fetishes and things like that can't be common everywhere in Japan...... wait, can they?
