Name: Avery Roth
Nicknames: N/A
Gender: Male
Age: 18
Fav. Food: Anything with chicken.
Hated Food: Steamed vegetables.
Gift: Free Throw King - One for the money. Two for the show. Three to get ready. And four to totally win the last game of the season, hurray! Avery has been dribbling basketballs since the day he stopped dribbling drool, and while practice may not make perfect, it's definitely paid off. He's known for rarely missing a basket, close to never missing a clean shot, and always acing the free throws, guaranteed. There's some controversy over if the coach intentionally urges him to get fouled so he'll be given said free throws, but you can't prove anything.
Virtues:
Pattern Picker-upper - Avery has an uncanny ability to recognize patterns in every form. It's one of his less noticeable virtues, but the most helpful. A lot of things follow a pattern, both factual and conditional. Behavior and even the way someone acts on the court usually follow some sort of predictable sequence, and he notices these. It's not uncommon to see him mumbling court-side to the coach about the fake-out the guy in jersey 19 is going to try. He always does.
Born Salesman - A good salesman can convince you to buy a toaster. A great salesman can convince someone they must have this fabulous, top-of-the-line, brand new, stainless steel toaster. Avery works by commission at a local appliance store, and never falls short of meeting his budgeting needs. This favors him in other walks of life, too. Yeah, man, he talked that hot girl into a date on Friday. Told you she wasn't a lesbian!
First to the starting line - Avery does look before he leaps, but he's got no problem being the first to look, no matter how dark, damp and scary the cavern of black death separating him from the other side is. If something needs to be done, and no one stands up to do it, he'll rise first and hopefully guide everyone down the right path. In short, Avery is the kid in the feel-good sports movie who gives the team their motivational speech at just the right moment when no one else will.
Flaws:
Last to the finish line: Avery seems so sure of himself, but that's only if he isn't given time to stop and think. If he's allowed to take a breather, suddenly, he hesitates. A lot. Second guessing himself during down time is a guarantee, and when this happens, everyone else in the race tends to zoom by him while he's wondering when the best time to pace himself is.
NO U - When it comes to heated debating, Avery fails at life. He can not argue worth a damn, especially when he's actually angry, and his line of defense consists of: "I'm not stupid! You're stupid!" It's different in his work environment where he merely has to convince someone they're making a good buy. In a debate, where he has to make himself seem "more right" instead of just right, he falls short.
Fear of Failure - Avery wants to be the very best. Like no one ever was. Anything else just isn't good enough, and this makes his interests very, very limited. If he falls off the horse, he is going to shoot that thing in the face and go back to something he knows he's good at already. Being critiqued, even politely, horrifies and annoys him. He's either really good at something or not good at all, if only because he's unwilling to persevere in the face of failure.
Predictable - Maybe he can predict the way someone will react, but any observant person could tell you the same thing about him. Avery is a very predictable person. Anyone who knows him well enough could tell you his faults, strengths and so on. His game sometimes suffers for it once someone recognizes the pattern of his technique. Additionally, it is very easy to manipulate him when you always know what his next move is.
