Racing down the steep slopes of the down, Cocklebur's gang was well on its way. The image of Nuthanger farm rising before them as they passed the strange limbless trees erected by man.

As they neared the farm, the two groups split and went their own ways. Cocklebur casting a glance towards Ginkgo's group as they headed for the garden and fields. The Captain meanwhile lead his group towards the farm proper.

Stopping before a fence, the Captain waited for his team to gather around, keeping his voice low.

"Now then, scour the grounds, search for anything of use or interest but keep alert for pfeffa, dogs, and especially man. But, I have a good feeling we'll find something here. Just don't let down your guard."

He looked over his team again and hummed to himself. "We'll need to group up so that we're not so easily noticed."

Cocklebur looked to Badassi and Blackthorn. He knew where their loyalties were. Ignorant the Captain was not.

"Blackthorn, Badassi, Althea, and Raven, you'll go the direction Frith rises. Cowslip, Fledgestone, Foxfleet, and Harebell will go the way Frith sets. The rest of you will go straight through. We'll meet on the far end to report what you've found. I'll make my way around the perimeter to check for elil. Now let's get a move on!"

User ImageBlackthorn loped along near the rear easily, making sure they all kept together and no one lagged behind so early. As they gathered in a group by a fence, he cast a critical eye over what was before them. The farm, with its shambling buildings, bits and pieces of those Hrududu that the man-things liked.. and other assorted objects. Plenty of places to hide.. and plenty of places for elil to lay in wait...

Looking up at Cocklebur as the Captain rattled off their new groups, he frowned faintly, risking the buck's wrath as he spoke in a low, careful voice. Not wanting to draw elil so soon. "Wouldn't it be wisest for us owsla to split between the groups..." Looks at Cowslip, Fledgestone, Foxfleet, and Harebell with a pointed gaze.

Harebell was almost glad they had came to a halt. For her first trek outside the warren, she was amazed at the distance they had covered; no doubt nothing for a trained owsla. She looked back towards the downs, her breath only holding a touch of labour. She wasn't unfit, she could run, just the lack of practice had thrown her off guard. She only hoped she wouldn't need to run back up that hill in a hurry for sake of the elil.
He large ears recieved new information; that of their leader as he gave out new commands to them all. The groups were once again splitting in half, leaving those who weren't as experienced to scout the area to the west for themselves. Was this a test of their abilities? She couldn't possibly question the captain's decision, though luckily one of the owsla did it for her. Yet, his dissapproving gaze irked her just a little.

"We won't dissapoint you, Sir. We may not be trained owsla but where else are we to start learning?" She replied softly, returning Blackthorn's pointed look as she turned from the group of owsla.

She decided it not worth the risk of lingering around as targets, anyway, and accepted Cocklebur's instructions, nodding in acknowledgement and heading off with her new group, sniffing around cautiously, her ears alert for the slightest foreign sound.

comming to a hault near the fence Seqioua caught her breath a bit. she looked around her ears erect and swiveling tensely she had never been to the farm before and all the sounds and smells here where new to her

she nodded sharply at her captains orders but stoped at blackthorns question, he did have a point, she thought, it would indeed be safer to have some one of expirence go with each group. but she'd wait until she was told to do something before she did so, she wouldn't risk ruining her chance at Owsla.

Cocklebur scowled at Blackthorn's remark. Naturally he would have to say something, but the Captain was quick with his reply.

"Are you implying they can't handle themselves? Despite what you may think, they are not incompetent. This is a chance to show their potential without one of you kitten sitting them. Besides, its rather unbecoming of an officer to question his captain. Now get going."

The last sentenced was given with a growl of warning, before Cocklebur set off on his own self assigned mission of elil watch.

Saxifrage had started to head off in the direction Cocklebur indicated, when the other Owsla officer intervened. The buck sat back on his hind legs, ears cocked to listen for elil, while he tried to consider the situation as quickly as possible. Speaking up against an officer could be seen as insubordination, but if he did so in defense of the Captain... He was a little curious about why the Captain had split them into such uneven groups, but then again, Saxifrage had never been to the farm before. The scent of elil, stronger than he'd ever been accustomed to up on the Down, was making him nervous already.

The buck took a breath, resolved not to say anything, but to instead simply ignore Blackthorn's question and continue straight on ahead, as the Captain had ordered.

Sequoia smirked sligtl at the captains reply and it filled her with a bit of confidence. However misplaced it may be. She caught up to saxifrage andlooked back out of curiosity but kept going, wanting to follow orders.

User ImageAmber eyes narrowed slightly as the captain shot back his reply. They both knew it had nothing to do with the newcomers proving themselves to Cocklebur, yet there was nothing Blackthorn could do about it. He did have to admit that questioning his superior was.. unpleasant, but his job was to look for the safety of those on the raid, not pander to Cocklebur's ego. But he had said his piece, and now he had to obey his Captain's order.

"Yes Sir." The reply was terse and gruff as the dark owsla turned and headed off in the direction indicated previously, ears that had been pressed backwards flicked up, swivelling this way and that. Amber gaze turning forwards to survey the area before him, judging for threats and all the while seeking anything that might be of use to them. Darting from one patch of cover to another he kept his attention on the ground around him, and the skies above, yet always kept half an ear on the rabbits with him. Yet with Badassi and Althea at his side, he knew they had a very strong team, and that the other two experienced owsla were more than capable of looking after themselves. With the three of them there, Raven was the safest of the entire raiding party.

Once they had joined him he turned to Badassi and Althea, speaking in a careful whisper. "I'm going to check out that log pile, wait here until its safe then join me. We need to head.. that way.." Nodding in the direction he ment, he waited till they both nodded before darting out from under their shelter, making a zig-zag pattern to an over turned bucket half-way towards the logs where he had thought he had seen something. Crouching in the shadow of the man-thing, he strained eyes, ears and nose to try and work out what was there, and what else might be lurking near by.

As the female slowly calmed her irritation down, she slowly edged towards the west, ears pricked, ready for any sound and her nose to the wind. The farm was so strange and foreign to her. There was many a delightful smell in the wind, yet also a dangerous blend of elil she had never smelt in her life. She couldn't begin to thank frith for her colouring now as she crept through the yellowed grass, blending in strangely well, sheltering her from hawk or any other flying elil that may be soaring above.

A large, shining object soon caught her attention. A silvery thing about the size of her head, hollowed out like a decayed log yet only on one side. A tin can, a man-thing. She sniffed at it, the insides smelt sweet, yet sour. An invisible food that she had never come across in her life: Chopped tomatoes.
Pawing breifly at it, she learned the thing made noise as it hit against the rocks, and Harebell leaped back in surprize, alerted by the strange noise it made.

She'd be sure not to touch such a thing again, it would attract too much attention.

Raven nodded at Cocklebur’s orders, “Yes sir”. Though she was not too happy that she wasn’t put into a group with him, and would most likely have protested if her group wasn’t entirely made up of Owsla. This was her chance to impress them at the very least; and if they were impressed surely Cocklebur would be equally impressed, right?

Puffing up her chest with satisfaction, Raven moved closer to her marli and waited for her group to spilt off, smirking as Cocklebur told off Blackthorn for questioning his orders.

Listening intently, Raven tried to hear what Blackthorn whispered to Badassi and her marli; but she couldn't quite catch everything, "Excuse me, but am I not worth the bother?" she snapped in a stage whisper, feeling more then a little irritated that he hadn't addressed her as well; afterall, was she not part of his group? She just stared with wide orange eyes as he darted off, wondering what it is that she was supposed to be doing.

"Yes sir." Badassi responded to Cocklebur with a sharp nod, but clearly from his rahter displeased expression, he was not thrilled about the orders. Blackthorn obviously wasn't either, what with his little response. Still, there was nothing either of them could do, not now. He was captain and they had to follow orders.

He followed Blackthorn and came to a halt as the darker buck whispered to he and Althea. "Yes; be careful. We'll be along shortly.

Cowslip felt his heart drop at the news that an Owsla would not be with their group. He would of felt slightly more comfortable had one been. He chewed his lip gently as he mulled over the situation, but what could one do?

He flinched at the sudden loud noise. It was obviously the sound of man's cold metal. He had heard and seen it before, yet it startled him.

Harebell! Don't mess with that! Lets go, before a pfeffa comes sniffing, or something."

Harebell's ears pricked at the sound of a friendly voice, glad it wasn't the vile creature mentioned in his speech. Feeling more than a little foolish, she quickly dodged around the can and made a beeline for Cowslip.

"I've never seen such a thing before." She whispered as she caught up with him, still keeping alert. "I've never known a thing to make a noise like that, not even birds."

The mere mention of a bird was enough to make the doe look up to the heavens, just to make sure. She had heard that some birds like things that catches Frith's blessing. and that metal certainly did that.

User ImageRowanberry had stayed silently in the background during the briefing and the trip to the farm. Just another large, stony faced Owsla in the crowd. He cocked an ear at the small squabble between Cocklebur and Blackthorn, but did not comment or allow his expression to show what he thought about it. When his captain was done splitting them up in smaller raid groups, however, he snapped into action. Being the highest ranking rabbit in his particular group he took charge, expecting the others to follow his lead.

"Let's get going then," he said in a raspy voice, noting with satisfaction that Saxifrage and Sequoia didn't have to be asked twice but had already started to move out. He was not stupid and knew that prancing across the farmyard without proper care could be dangerous or even deadly, and he quietly shared what words of wisdom he could think of while they crept forward.

"Keep your wits about you, outskirter," he said to the grey male, giving him a glare that suggested the young one would regret it if he didn't, "I'd rather not have to bail you out of trouble."

He stopped to look at the last buck, Tangleweed. The fellow was the most brightly coloured of the five rabbits. Could be a blessing or a curse, really, but he decided against telling him to go roll in some dirt. Someone bright could come in handy.

"Hope you are a decent runner," he said and stared pointedly at Tangleweed's white pelt, "You might be able to lead elil away from the other rabbits if push comes to shove. It's possible to fool elil by tricking them into following different rabbits until they are too tired to catch one, but it's very dangerous. We will only use it as a last resort."

As the rabbits moved out, each group headed in a different direction.

With Blackthorn's group going through the eastern side of the farm, they would come across a large red man structure. Its front gaped wide like a huge mouth waiting to devour whatever came inside. However, the sweet smells of flayrah wafted out from the structure. As well as the smell of other, much larger animals, their grunts and groans being heard inside. By Frith, what was in there? There was a wood pile just outside of it as well, and something moved among the pieces of wood, but it was not clearly seen and its smell was obscured by the scents coming from the barn.

Cowslip's group moved in the westerly direction, towards another large structure that was as white as the fallen snow. The scent of man was strong here, but other curious smells were around as well. Gleaming tall things of metal stood next to the man structure, much like the thing that Harebell had stumbled across but much larger. Odd smells came from them, as well as a huge pile of dirt and fresh waste which made up a compost pile.

Rowanberry's group went straight through the farm, seeing and smelling many different things to the point that it was almost confusing. There was a small shed with sweet smells much like the barn coming from it... but most curiously there was the faint scent of rabbit. However, caution needed to be used here as the smell of dog was strong also. Nearby was a dog house with a sleeping hound chained to it.

User ImageShe watched while running at an easy lope as the other group split away towards the fields. Cocklebur never did mention what the purpose of sending them off in two groups was. She imagined that one would act as guard as that would make the sense, but they were heading straight into the farm. Perhaps the hutch rabbits? But this was a raid for flayrah. She frowned in thought. Easing into her stop near the fence, she kept her bulk hunkered down; her size being her biggest enemy here. Her ears were dancing wildly to listen to everything as best she could, but their twitching stopped momentarily when the Captain spoke.

He had a good feeling about finding something here? Hraka. Finding what? Althea looked beyond the fence into the farmyard. Only man things, that's what. There was no flay worth stealing here. Then he spoke again and her head snapped. Staring at him with obvious reproach, she couldn't believe it. Though she agreed with splitting up to draw less attention to themselves, had he really just sent all the new ears into one group save one? His own daughter?

Althea was debating having a word with him when Blackthorn did it for her. She nodded her agreement to the other Owsla, but Cocklebur would have none of it. She looked to Badassi and Blackthorn to see their reactions. Of course they couldn't disobey an order. Not outright. But if Cocklebur was so sure of this year's ability then why send Raven with the Owsla? Wouldn't she of all the youth be something he'd want to test, being his own blood?

Embleer Frith! What a mess. She turned away towards the other Owsla, mindful of Raven. When Blackthorn motioned to them and spoke, she was pretty sure what he was intending. Raven's outcry at being left out made her turn to the young outskirter sharply.

"Quiet!"

She hissed in a sharp tone, keeping her voice low.

"Don't speak unless you must, your words are louder than your footfalls. And you are not Owsla yet young one, it's not for you to know. There is more going on today than just a farm raid, I'm sure of it. Now, stay as my shadow. Move as I do, and stay hidden and silent. Shadow's aren't caught, and they aren't killed."

Her golden eyes were very serious, and she made sure that Raven caught the importance of the situation. A ways away, Harebell made her discovery and Althea's ears shot up. She caught the snippet of the doe's and Cowslip's conversation and nodded towards it while looking at Raven pointedly. It was a perfect example of what not to do.

Shaking her head, she turned to watch Blackthorn dart towards the logs in a proper fashion. Which brought to mind the difference between him and Harebell. It was so obvious the other group was lacking in the skills needed here on the raid, so why had Cocklebur singled them out? What on earth could he possibly gain from their own warren rabbits dying?

Cocklebur wasn't a fool, so what was his game? Althea's nose tweaked nervously as she scented for elil.
