It's possible that you might be able to win a senator or congressman position as a democrat. I'm pretty sure you would be fighting a losing battle running as an atheist republican though. Hell, it's even possible for you to make it as a governor. Jesse Ventura was governor of my state for a while and he is an openly-admitted atheist. Of course, what probably helped him overcome this was his wrestling and Hollywood fame.
My suggestions to you if you decide to run are:
1. Keep a low profile about your atheism. Just don't discuss religion at any point during your campaign.
2. Run democrat or independent.
3. Don't run negative ads; only respond to negative ads that are false or misleading about you. This makes your opponent look that much more stupid.
4. Going door-to-door in neighborhoods helps.
5. You have no hope for the presidency. Don't waste your time with it.

6.) I'm not so big on Universal Health Care; but welfare and medicare/medicaid is fine.
What's wrong with the public option? There are a lot of people who are denied coverage for pre-existing conditions, and in many cases even when people can afford healthcare and are covered, the insurance company will find a loophole to avoid paying for costs even when the individual is supposed to be insured. Fact is, we've seen much more positive statistics regarding healthcare coverage and expenses coming out of European nations which are mostly socialized healthcare. Plus, the public option would reduce national deficits according to the Congressional Budget Office estimates.

7.) I want to help businesses and the common man. [reduce govt regulations]
If you want to help businesses and the common man, you would know that always reducing government regulations doesn't accomplish that. The point of regulations is to protect businesses and individuals from being unfairly misused or abused. It's because of government regulations that people don't get fired from their jobs anymore just because they had an injury and needed a couple weeks to recover, and it's because of deregulation that banks were allowed to abuse the system and gamble with money they didn't actually have which got us into the economic mess we're in today. Corporatist politicians who are getting paid by lobbyists have been very good at misleading people to believe that less government regulation means more freedom when in reality it means more freedom for corporations to abuse you and your money.
